Stick to baseball, 2/2/19.

My ranking of the top 100 prospects in baseball ran this week, with four separate pieces: #1 through #50, #51 through #100, my column of fourteen more guys who just missed, and a ranking of the top 20 prospects just for impact in 2019. I also held a Klawchat on Wednesday and a Periscope video chat on Thursday.

My ranking of all 30 farm systems will run on Monday, February 4th, after which the team by team reports will run, one division per day for the following six days. I’ve written 24 of the 30 team reports so far, if you’re curious.

Many thanks to the White Sox blog SouthSideSox and writer katiesphil for this lovely review of Smart Baseball.

And now, the links…

  1. I thought the below article from the BBC on how Helsinki dealt with it’s homelessness problem was interesting.

  2. I am torn on the Northam situation. Yes the costumes were abominable even for that time, and you have to question the judgment of a person who would champion the photo by putting it in their yearbook.

But who among us would be proud of our worst acts from our 20s? A med school student is clearly not a child, but should Northam’s actions from his relative youth determine his fitness for office now? I think a more measured response is necessary, keeping in context the time, the individuals character now, his level of contrition and desire to learn from past mistakes.

And to be clear: this isn’t remotely the same as charges of potential sexual assault like were leveled against Kavanaugh.

    • I disagree. This one seems very straightforward to me. He was an adult. Having that in your past should disqualify you from such a high office. We can find governors who have no racist displays in their past.

And let’s leave the “whataboutism” to the right-wing nuts and trumpists.

    • While I think Northam’s actions over his years in public office demonstrate that he is not a racist, this is still a disqualifying act, and Northam knows it. It irreparably damages his ability of effectively lead his state, and therefore he must resign.

    • If his racist masquerade occurred in the 1930’s, 40’s, or 50’s, the “context of the era” may have been a somewhat questionably valid excuse. But 1984? No excuse. Now Northam is digging himself into a deeper hole by first confirming, then denying, that it was him in the photo. Oh, and he did darken his face once before, he admits now (someone must have found another photo of him).

    • A Salty Scientist

I’m more than okay with kicking out politicians who did extremely racist, sexist, and/or homophobic shit in their 20’s. And it’s not like the Democrats’ bench is so weak that they can’t do without those politicians.

    • Not just a man in his 20s – a man in medical school. Ostensibly smart enough and exposed to enough other people to know better.

    • I totally agree that Northam should resign, but I am getting sick of the one rule for Democrats, no rules for Republicans situation we always see unfold when something like this occurs.

    • A Salty Scientist

Fuck ’em. If the Republicans can’t force their Steve Kings out, that’s their own problem. It is frustrating trying to shame the shameless, but that doesn’t mean the Democrats should resign themselves to lower standards and whataboutism.

    • And now the man is claiming he has no knowledge of the photo and that it wasn’t him in either costume…ok I agree, he’s gotta go.

  3. Did everyone guess right on Northam’s party?

  4. I thought this piece in Paste about living with Pure OCD (which I do myself) was tremendous and hit incredibly close to my own experience.

  5. That Washington Post piece is really well done, but it’s weird to call Le Diplomate a new restaurant. It was there when I lived in DC, which was 5 years ago.

    • That seemed odd to me as well, but at that time (in the 2014ish period) Le Diplomate actually WAS new; hard to believe, since it seems like it’s been around forever
