Stick to baseball, 9/24/21.

For subscribers to the Athletic, I named my Prospect of the Year for 2021, going through a number of the top candidates this year (and there were too many to include), and two weeks ago I profiled Austin Riley’s transformation from a low-OBP hitter with exploitable holes to a downballot MVP candidate. I also held a Klawchat on Friday.

I spoke to Joe Posnanski on my podcast this week, talking about his new book, The Baseball 100, which comes out on Tuesday. You can buy it here. And you can subscribe to my podcast on iTunes and Spotify.

Over at Paste, I ranked the ten best games that are currently out of print, and my Gen Con wrapup should be up today or maybe on Monday.

I sent out a new edition of my free email newsletter this week. And, as the holidays approach, I’ll remind you all every week that I have two books out, The Inside Game and Smart Baseball, that would make great gifts for the readers (especially baseball fans) on your lists.

  1. Nevermind was released when I was in college, so I was contractually obligated to like it and worship grunge. But I never signed the contract. I’d listen to the Black Album over it any day.

  2. Many decades ago when I was in elementary school my entire class filed down to the gym to receive a polio vaccination. There were no abstainers. I’m not sure it would have been allowed if anyone had wanted to abstain. That is immaterial, but what is important is that within a short period of time polio was virtually eradicated as a public health menace. I believe the Republican, Dwight Eisenhower was the president of the United States of America at the time.

    • The Republican Party has only embraced anti-science in the last ~20 years. They weren’t always like this.

    • A Salty Scientist

It really is a sad development because it has pushed intellectuals out of the GOP. Anecdotally, I know several conservative scientists who cannot bring themselves to vote GOP due to the rampant anti-intellectualism of the party. And at the party level, we’ve ended up electing a bunch of absolute morons and demagogues.

  3. I’ve only known about Charlamagne tha God at a very surface level, mostly from his appearances on late night shows and some random youtube videos. Wow. Unsure how Comedy Central + Colbert can justify working with this guy.
