Stick to baseball, 10/20/18.

My first dispatch from the Arizona Fall League went up for ESPN+ subscribers this week, covering Forrest Whitley, Vlad Guerrero Jr., Julio Pablo Martinez, and more. I’ll file another, likely longer report this weekend.

My latest board game review for Paste covers the Spiel des Jahres-nominated cooperative game The Mind, where all players have to try to play all their hand cards to the table in ascending order – but without communicating with each other at all.

I’ll be at the Manheim Library in Manheim, PA, on Monday, October 22nd, to talk about Smart Baseball and sign copies of the book (which will be available for purchase there too).

I sent out the latest edition of my free email newsletter on Friday night. If you don’t get it, you don’t know what you’re missing.

And now, the links…

  1. Only a month ago, Sears CEO Eddie Lambert blamed retiree pensions for Sears’s problems. By filing for bankruptcy, that burden will likely fall on the PBGC. In 1993, Sears had under it’s umbrella Discover Card, Dean Witter (now part of Morgan Stanley), Coldwell Banker, and Allstate. Lambert is really just the latest CEO to sell off the company’s crown jewels.

  2. FYI Link to mass transit article doesn’t seem to be working. Love the roundup as always

  3. Surprised you didn’t mention Jonathan Chait’s excellent review of Max Boot’s new book in your roundup. Call me naive, but among “NeverTrumpers,” I find Boot’s conversion and assessment to be the most convincing and believable.

  4. Thanks for your diligence in surfacing important (=more than occasionally bizarre, but true) stories about the depravity and lack of humanity among certain political entities. As for the anti-vaxxers in Arizona and other places, maybe we can set up classes that are only for kids of anti-vaxxers, on school grounds set apart from everyone else. Of course, I’m not sure a lot of teachers will sign up for that duty, but at least we can keep unvaccinated kids away from everyone else.

    • Thanks! I’ll check them out. I’m flying home now and writing up my second AFL dispatch.

  6. I find that reading this article every week is, for me, a little like watching Bill Maher’s show. I enjoy it, I get some interesting information I might not otherwise see/hear, and after I’m done I feel almost completely depressed with knowing just how fucked we are because of how fucking stupid we are.

Even so, please keep doing this, Keith. I wish more people kept their readers so informed.

  7. I was surprised to see WA at only 11 on the voting list, then noticed that the study is as of the 2016 elections. As of 2018, we have AVR (if you interact with the state government you automatically get registered unless you actively opt out), and our vote-by-mail ballots are now postage-paid. The only excuse you could possibly have for not voting is somehow being unable to find someone over the next 2 weeks to drop your ballot in a mailbox for you if you are unable to do so yourself.

  8. If you make it to New Brunswick NJ for the pizza (Fatto Americano) ,save some room for Destination Dogs too (same owners) They have some great creations. My favorite is the Choripan, which is chorizo with chimichurri. One Bite in Bangkok is very good as well: python sausage with pepper jelly. One of our favorite places to go for lunch. New Brunswick is becoming a pretty little food place.

Destination Dogs has a Philly location too.
