Keith Law on the Interwebs…

My updated top 100 ranking for this year’s draft is up. My first-round projection will be up later tonight is up now as well.

And I’m on mental_floss as a guest quizmaster for the week. After I sent them a suggestion for a “Name X in Y” quiz, they actually asked me to write four more and make a big thing of it. I’m not sure if this represents slumming for me or for them, but the first quiz, on geography is up now: Can you name the ten countries in ASEAN? There will also be quizzes on baseball, books, and music, but I couldn’t come up with a viable one for food (at least not in the “Name X in Y” format), so the fifth one is on politics.

I’ll also be on AllNight tonight with Jason Smith, although we tape it before the show so I don’t know exactly when it’ll air.

Comments

  1. Allow me to be the first to say – no, no I can not. Well, maybe I could stumble my way into getting the correct answer (I certainly know plenty of countries), but it would be just plain, dumb luck.

That said, I feel like I have a much better shot on the baseball, books, music, and (especially) politics quizzes…

  2. Good quiz. I did not know the answer off the top of my head but was able to get there by deduction.

  3. Damn that quiz!
First I could not spell Philippines for the life of me and then I could not remember the new name for Burma!!

    Good one Keith!

  4. Burma was an acceptable answer.

  5. JKGaucho – eventually, I figured that out, but wasted precious seconds (if not a minute).

  6. @Vlad – Same for me with the Philippines.

  7. I’ll concede: I didn’t know the list, and tossed the question at the wife who rattled them off like the alphabet. She knows her some Asia.

  8. I’ve been asked to write a Cubs trivia for a site and I was wondering where to go to start. Any suggestions?

  9. Didn’t know it, but was able to get them all. Sporcle has refined my world geography, for sure!

Also, nothing to do with this post, but Matt Wieters, coming to a ballpark near you this Friday!

  10. I took that list down with 3:11 to spare…Keith, you’ve got give us some harder stuff! (j/k, of course)

I almost forgot Burma- it was the last one I put down, and I had put down India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea before remembering it.

  11. Along the lines of “off topic” and “super catchers”, what do you make of Mauer’s start? Is there anything to suggest the power is real (maybe not at the current rate, but that he may be turning into a regular 25-30 HR hitter)? Has he adjusted his approach? I’m stunned/intrigued/excited/skeptical…

  12. That quiz dominated me.

Livan Hernandez just threw a complete game vs. the Nationals in a 6-1 win. Keith will be unavailable due to his head exploding.

  13. As a daily mental floss reader, I love the quiz idea!

I got all 10 on the first quiz, but I’ve honed my geography skills on the various Sporcle geography quizzes.

  14. 9 out of 10. In my excuse, I lived in Manila for 3 years.

  15. Hahahaha….I couldn’t spell Philippines either…otherwise would’ve officially had all 10. Had 8 in 45 seconds with Cambodia coming at about 3:15. Then spent about 90 seconds trying to spell the Philippines until I was convinced that just wasn’t the correct answer. Oh well.

For geography geeks (color me one of them) the Travel IQ game on Facebook is a great time waster.

  16. Francis Borchardt

Man, I crushed that quiz with 4:15 left. Though I, like many here, haveworked myself up on Sporcle. I finish their “every country in the world quiz” in about 12 minutes now.

  17. Didn’t know Brunei. Ashamed.

  18. Keith, completely unrelated, but I was wondering if you think there’s any need to be concerned that Zack Greinke is going to be overworked this season? He’s still pretty young, and while his pitch counts aren’t terrible, they are consistently pretty high. Do you think he’s hit a stage in his development where he can just go out there and pitch as needed, or do the Royals still need to look out for this? Thanks.

  19. Chris in Dallas

Dang it. I whiffed on Philippines because I couldn’t spell it! And it took me a couple tries on Burma becuase I thought it was Myanmar now and I couldn’t spell that either. Oh well, 8 out of 9 ain’t bad. Give me a 60 on the scouting scale for my ASEAN knowledge.

  20. Chris in Dallas

edit on my last post: 9 out of 10. Give me a 35 on the math scale…

  21. Padres GM Kevin Towers on the team’s surprising play this season:

“A lot of it has to do with David Eckstein”

    Ugh.

  22. It must be his scrappiness and gritty determination, lol.
