Stick to baseball, 2/13/16.

So, the first part of the top 100 prospects package is up: the top 100 ranking itself, ten prospects who just missed, and the ranking of all 30 farm systems. My team by team top tens and reports will go up Tuesday and Wednesday. I also held a Klawchat here on Thursday to discuss the top 100.

My latest review for Paste covers Barony, the new game from the designer of Splendor.

I intend to be somewhat scarce over the weekend, and will be visiting Toyfair on Monday to chat with boardgame publishers about their 2016 releases. I’ll post pics of anything interesting on my Instagram account.

And now, the links…

    Keith,

I know you’ve had a ton of output recently, but do you have a breakdown of the Khris Davis –> Oakland deal?

  2. This is an admittedly (nerdy/annoying) minor quibble, but OK Go’s video mimics zero g, not zero gravity. Zero g is a descriptor of weightlessness , whereas zero gravity is the absence of gravity (which, to my knowledge, does not exist).

  3. Kieth, why do you feel Sloan Park is a boondoggle? Genuinely curious. Thanks.

  4. Auto correct due to use. My uncle spells it differently. My sincere apologies. I’ve been Steven more times than not. Hope you’ll answer my original question.

    • Kieth is not a valid spelling of the name.

Sloan Park was a $42 million project paid for by the city to benefit a private company that was already located within the city limits. It’s nothing but a huge wealth transfer from Mesa taxpayers to the Cubs’ owners.

  5. I’m sure all of us can find people in our past that would say nasty things about us. But with Cruz, it does seem like he is someone who is easy to dislike, even if you agree with his positions. It would have been better for him if he was a professional athlete and just had this unworldly competitive streak. At least some would say that was what made him great. I think the quote from that article that struck me was that Cruz wanted to win above all else, even above just being friendly with people. It’s one think to keep to yourself, but if you’re doing it because you have ulterior motives, you just come across as an asshole.

    • As I understand it, the issue isn’t that there are a bunch of people from Cruz’s past who think he’s an ass. It is that *EVERYONE* from his past seems to think he is an ass. If true, that would seem to set him apart from most.

  6. Thanks for responding. You’re a former resident and someone who pays close attention to these things, which is why I asked you. My family has had nothing but great things to say about the project. I’m definitely not one for private enterprise to be forced upon the citizens via public financing. As a Cubs fan, I don’t feel this has been brought up enough. Could be that the Wrigleyville renovation is being financed privately and is getting more attention in this part of the country. On a separate note. My wife and I tried Pizzaria Bianco at your recommendation during our last visit. We fell in love with both the food and the atmosphere. It was a very slow evening and we got very lucky getting in after a short but enjoyable wait at the bar next door. Hands down the best pizza I’ve had in the States. Looking forward to trying the sandwich shop you highlighted. Seems to be a similar place to Cochon Butcher in NOLA after a short browse of the website. Thanks again for responding. I really enjoy the content you provide. Your Saturday links have been something I always look forward to reading.

  7. Hi Klaw – appreciate your recommendations, as always, and I’ve enjoyed many of the books on your top 101 (and the Guardian list).

I’ve been meaning to pass on some recommendations of my own, in particular my favourite Australian novels – I think you’d enjoy a few of them (assuming you haven’t already):
    1. Cloudstreet by Tim Winton – arguably the classic Australian novel. A sprawling story about the lives of two families in post WW2 Perth. In some ways an Australian House of the Spirits.
    2. Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey – a sad, but at times wonderfully funny, story about race, fear and class in 1960’s Western Australia.
    3. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent – actually set in 19th century Iceland, but a remarkably vivid novel by a very talented young author.

  8. Hey Keith. Great lists. Love your work. So I see that Eloy Jimenez made the top 10 for the Cubs and I have him in a dynasty league but unfortunately, there isn’t much to read up on him.

    http://m.mlb.com/news/article/62992920/

MLB described him as the top international prospect when he signed. It could just be slow going as he is quite young for his age, but the real question I have is: Is he would we thought he was? Is this just a young, raw talent getting used to the MLB circuit or have any scouts opinions changed on him?

  9. Keith Law
has made a List of everyone he ever saw
    in Order of Merit
argumentative types will then gladly pay to inherit.

  10. my Clerihew should be taken as an appreciation of what you do and what you say…pse advise some time as to whether you wish any further commentary in this form or would be happier not.
