This is priceless: Minnesota Twins should trade stars for Boston Red Sox’s cheap youth.
The article itself is bad enough – there’s a reason I don’t do “these two teams should make this trade!” columns – but here’s the doozy: Writer Bob Sansevere – a sportswriter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press since 1984 – says that the Twins should trade (among others) Carlos Silva to the Red Sox. Which would be a brilliant idea, if Silva hadn’t declared free agency about a month ago. But hey, don’t be afraid to keep track of the 25 players on your one local major league team, Bob.

I had a feeling that was coming. I’ll discuss media coverage of baseball here, because I’m not allowed to write about this stuff over at the four-letter. Actual discussion of why this trade proposal is batshit-insane, however, would have to go over there (points to ESPN.com).

That’s cool. FJM is destination reading for me, and I’m also a regular reader of your stuff (and several of your baseball-specific colleagues’) at the WWL, so I’m glad to see some overlap (and that anyone working for the WWL would acknowledge FJM’s existence).
The article in question here also reminded me of this article from earlier this year. There be something in the water in the Metrodome press box.
My favorite part (moreso than Silva, which was not an analysis error by an oversight) is the inclusion of Papelbon for Nathan, and the implication that it’s a step up for the Red Sox. Papelbon is better, much younger, much cheaper, cost controlled, and is a huge fan favorite. If Epstein traded those all guys he’d be shot.

in what universe is nathan to be considered a step up? oh, wait…must be the same one that comes up with lunatic deals like this.

That said, I don’t see a Twins/Sox deal for Santana happening even in the real world. While the Delmon Young deal muddies things somewhat (prior to giving up Garza, I wouldn’t have thought Lester had much value to them as they have three or four guys at that level of potential, but he might now), the Twins are going to want Ellsbury to solve their CF problem, and the Sox almost certainly won’t deal him. They’ll also much prefer Buchholz to Lester. Crisp+Buchholz isn’t exciting to me as a Twins fan.
I fear the Yankees will make the Santana deal — Hughes, Cabrera, and some promising youngsters at A/AA would probably get it done.

Windier, you have a point, but consider that the Pioneer Press hacks don’t write about baseball either. They only write about wacky fantasy lands. Someone from one of the Twin Cities papers honestly suggested that the Twins get in on the A-Rod sweepstakes this summer.
