Stick to baseball, 8/15/26.

Just one piece from me at the Athletic this week, my story on how and why Catan Studios is forging partnerships in the sports world. I’m on PTO right now, so I won’t be posting anything there for a few more days.

I sent out a fresh edition of my free email newsletter on Wednesday. For socials, I’m still mostly on Bluesky, Instagram, and TikTok.

And now, the links – heavy on the NY Times this week…

  1. Instead of a statue, which SpaceX/Starbase could prevent from ever being built due to them controlling the local zoning boards and building codes, I would hope CAH just simply arranges rocks in such a way that it spells out “Elon Musk is a Sad Little Bitch with No Friends” and wait for Google and other companies to fly over and photograph it.

  2. I look forward to your stick to baseball posts than I do to your baseball posts.
ps… why do u hate my team?

  3. Nathan Cofnas, the individual responsible for Arday being exposed, is not a white nationalist. He is jewish.

    • Both of those things can be true at the same time. He calls himself a “race realist,” a euphemism for being a racist piece of trash.

    • Brian in NoVA

Stephen Miller is also Jewish. That doesn’t make him any less of a racist POS.

  4. In one small defense of Vindman, according to the article he was told to “shut the fuck up” first, so I’d characterize his own swearing as returning fire. He subsequently apologized, so this seems more distracting than anything.

His vote OTOH was thoughtless and irrational. “Parental rights” is nonsensical here. As the parent of a trans teen it’s my fault if my kid can’t be honest with me. The parents demanding this are the ones who can’t accept their kid is trans or non-binary and want to control them. Further, the idea that the harm to the parent is somehow greater than the to the child doesn’t bear scrutiny.

I need to follow the other story more. I didn’t feel the woman was acting “crazy” until she showed up outside the school and accosted other parents. I don’t feel that it’s helpful to just quash or ignore the concerns of people like her. If we’re going to move forward we need to reason with people like her. Look up Aaron Driver if you want an example of someone who needs to be marginalized.

Side note: Seth Moulton is down over 20 points in his Senate bid. His clueless take on trans girls in sports was ridiculous. Amy Acton, who recently echoed Moulton in her misgendering of trans girls, lost my household’s votes. I’ll put up with Governor Ranaswamy if it helps centrist Dems get the message that throwing trans citizens — especially kids — under the bus is a political loser.

  5. I agree the person who ultimately outed Arday is awful, and I also find the story tragic, but I cannot ignore that there were other attempts to expose his plagiarism that he fought in bad faith.

He attempted to intimidate a journalist, and that does matter. He is a tragic figure, but he wasn’t a hero by any means.
