Stick to baseball, 6/4/22.

No new articles from me this week at The Athletic, but that will change over the weekend after I see Kumar Rocker on Saturday night.

On my podcast, I spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Emma Baccellieri about the “sweeper” slider, Brett Phillips, the Mets, and being Italian-American. You can subscribe via iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, amazon, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Over at Paste, I reviewed Three Sisters, a fantastic new roll-and-write game from the designers of Fleet: The Dice Game.

I do send out a free email newsletter about twice a month. My two books, Smart Baseball and The Inside Game, are both available in paperback, and you can buy them at your local independent book store or at Bookshop.org.

And now, the links…

  1. I just can’t fathom how the gun control debate can even be engaged honestly anymore. If you’re arguing for more guns not less or saying that more regulations aren’t needed, you need to explain why mass shootings have gone up since the assault weapons ban was repealed. You need to explain why even though the US has roughly 1.2 guns per capita (way above our economic peers in the developed world), it has by far a much higher gun death rate than said economic peers. The US is an outlier compared to almost every other developed country. The only other thing we do differently is our health care system. So gun control opponents are either secretly on the side of socialized medicine (wouldn’t be a bad idea) or they’ll claim various excuses which can’t explain the stark contrast.

Cisneros and her story is wild. cuellar actively harmed bidens agenda, is pro gun and pro life, and has an active corruption investigation against him. Yet major figures in the democratic party (Pelosi, clyburn, etc) actively campaigned for him! Gave him tons of money. Democratic leadership only has one action and its to punch left. When that doesn’t work they are lost. If democratic leadership does nothing it’s likely Cisneros wins. I am ready for the olds to die off and allow new leadership to take over.

    • If I ever met Nancy Pelosi, I would probably have to be dragged away from her as I screamed epithets at her about how terrible she is at her job and demanding how she could support an anti-choice, under-investigation incumbent right after the leaked SCOTUS decision came out. It’s why I don’t necessarily call myself a Democrat, though my voter registration card says I am. These corporate centrists who seem more concerned with there being a viable REPBULICAN party rather than a strong DEMOCRATIC party have ruined everything, not the progressives. The DNC and the mainstream media deserve all the blame for letting that narrative take hold.

  3. There hasn’t been a lot of success stories fighting public funding for stadiums/arenas. Just this year, the Bills and Titans received a bunch of money for new stadiums in Buffalo and Nashville. The Coyotes are in negotiations now for a new arena in Tempe. The A’s are letting Vegas and Oakland fight to see who can give them more money. Long Beach is looking to lure the Angels, the Bears just bought land in Arlington Heights and I fully expect them to try to get money from the suburb/county/state. Some of these may not be money directly given to the team, but rather creating a special tax district that funnels money to the teams.

  4. “A right-wing militia member shot and killed a retired judge in Wisconsin”. This obviously was a horrific tragedy. However, nowhere in the article does it say the man was a right-wing militia member. Other articles I’ve read have mentioned a possible militia connection, but nothing confirmed, and in fact the follow up article in the Journal Sentinel quoted people who knew him well and stated they knew nothing of him being in a militia.
He had Mitch McConnell on his list! He does not sound like a right-winger, but instead a violent crackpot.
I find it interesting that in your baseball scouting, you try to be as objective as you can possibly be, in order to provide your best impression of a player. But on here, you tend towards the opposite, pushing a narrative to the point of making things up. (I believe the last time I commented was after the Rittenhouse shooting, to refute a factually incorrect claim that Kenosha was peaceful at that time, when instead it was multiple days of riots and almost a warzone type atmosphere.)
I enjoy reading the links, but please stick to the truth. Thanks!

    • “A source close to the investigation tells WTMJ’s John Mercure the 56-year-old suspect was part of a militia.” (link)

    • From the Journal Sentinel:
“Baden described him as “anti-government,” but he did not know of any associations with a militia, as some news outlets have reported.”
“Joshua said Uhde had never demonstrated an interest in violence against public officials and also never knew him to be part of a militia.”
      And, per this link, https://www.wisn.com/article/investigation-killing-of-retired-wisconsin-judge-roemer/40209427#
it turns out that another guy on the hit list is running for Chippewa County sheriff, and owns a gun store. If he had started with that guy, reactionary people on the right would be – erroneously – running with the story that he’s a far left anti-gun guy.

There are conflicting reports as to whether he is a militia member, and I don’t believe I’ve seen any reporting at all on whether he’s right wing or not. The people that comprise his hit list are from both sides of political spectrum. Based on what we know so far, to me he comes off as violent crackpot who is mad at everyone, but either way, at this point to label him a “right wing militia member” simply isn’t supported by the facts.

    • That article ran after I wrote this post. At the time of writing, reliable sources referred to him as a right-wing militia member, QED.

  5. @Drew. If you don’t understand why McConnell would be on the hit list of a far-right extremist, you really aren’t in a position to lecture anyone, as you clearly aren’t paying enough attention to the current spectrum of political ideologies. Think “Hang Mike Pence!” if the light bulb isn’t going off.

The pink slime example was interesting. It was fun to read through the comments section and see defensive reactions trying to point to actual examples of changes to grading as if that has anything to do with partisan-funded fake news outlets or the specific deficits of the article in question. Lots of straw. Watch your cigarettes.
