Stick to baseball, 4/2/22.

I had three posts for subscribers to the Athletic in the last ten days, two scouting notebooks from the Cactus League (here’s one, here’s the other), and my annual breakout candidates post. That last one is shorter than usual because I just couldn’t confidently back any other names for it.

I’m working on the next edition of my free email newsletter. You can find both of my books, Smart Baseball and The Inside Game, in paperback anywhere books are sold, including Bookshop.org.

And now, the links…

I don’t care about scrabble that much. But I enjoy hearing Fatsis talk about scrabble. Someone being that passionate about anything is fun. Even silly stories like that.

I enjoyed many of these links, including the long-form article on McKay and his (somewhat indulgent) evolution as a filmmaker/story teller.

One Quibble, tho: The piece yada, yadas ‘The Big Short’ :). The Big Short is a masterpiece. Full stop. There are many essays available as to why, but to make the defining film of one the most pivotal societal events of American cultural and financial history, and to do so in a way which is not only brilliantly entertaining to watch, but also incredibly rich in detail… I mean, that’s an accomplishment on the level of The Godfather.

Whether McKay will suffer more later in life mediocrity the way Francis Ford Coppola did is a really, really fascinating question. But that linked essay weakens its thesis (to put it mildly) but treating The Big Short as some quaint little success.
