Stick to baseball, 3/6/21.

For subscribers to the Athletic, I ranked the top 30 prospects in this year’s draft class, with the caveat of course that we’ll likely see a lot of movement this spring because most college players didn’t play at all last summer or fall. I also answered some questions on the Padres’ farm system for our beat writer Dennis Lin. And I held a Klawchat on Thursday.

My guest on the Keith Law Show this week is Aaron Fitt of D1baseball.com, talking about this year’s draft class, Kumar Rocker vs. Jack Leiter, and other topics around college baseball. You can subscribe on Apple podcasts, Amazon, and Spotify.

The latest edition of my free email newsletter was about how it feels when the face in the mirror finally starts to catch up with your biological age. Also, you can still buy The Inside Gameand Smart Baseball anywhere you buy books; the paperback edition of The Inside Game will be out on April 6th.

  1. I wish Texas would just get along with seceding already. I’ll call them a cab. I’ll hold the door.

    • Don’t be like that. Signed, a longtime Georgia voter.

    • Thank you, sansho1. I’m a longtime Georgia voter myself and I loathe this reductionist view towards states with disenfranchised populations

  2. Don’t be like what? It’s clear that Texas isn’t really interested in being part of the United States.

    • That’s a great way to further marginalize and oppress underrepresented communities

    • A Salty Scientist

I’ve flippantly said that the South should just secede and get on with it, but it’s frustration and I don’t mean it. For one, it totally ignores the millions of liberals in the South and conservatives on the coasts (the derpiest Trumpist conspiracy monger I know is someone I went to high school with in CA). Worse, it would further erode minority protections in the South. Texas has one of the highest proportions of Hispanic Americans, and the South in general has a high proportion of Black Americans. Simply throwing them completely to the wolves because of their derpy governance is not the moral thing to do. And some of us living in the South are trying to do our part to make our states better, even if it’s a slow and painful slog. My small Southern college town flew BLM banners on MLK day, and passed an anti-discrimination ordinance that included both sexual orientation and gender identity. Progress isn’t linear, but it is happening.

    • More people voted for Trump in CA than for Trump in TX. More people voted for Biden in both TX and FL than for Biden in NY.

  3. You might want to examine the voting breakdown of Texas natives versus transplants before making such a claim

    • I assume sansho is saying don’t give up on a red state, because several red states could turn blue very soon, as Georgia did.

As much as I loathe Gov. Abbott, Sens. Cruz and Cornyn, and their under-indictment Attorney General, more than 5 million voters in Texas voted for Joe Biden, and nearly 4.9 million voted for MJ Hegar. Those people should not be ignored or discarded, or otherwise treated like they don’t matter.

    • To clarify, I had meant this post and the next as a reply to Stu’s awful take…my bad for messing up the threading. Agreed that the people of Texas deserve the same rights/dignity as the rest of us regardless of who they vote for. The point of my rebuttal is that the “secede” mentality comes from and is driven by rich carpetbaggers more than anyone else and treating that reactionary impulse as inherently “Texan” does a great disservice to those that have been there the longest.

  4. Keith, that article about ancient games was a trip. We’ve had a version of Senet for 25 years but never knew it’s name because the instructions literally call it “Ancient Egyptian Game” Haven’t played for years though as we have lost a few pieces during multiple moves. Thanks for all the links.

  5. Sorry you all think my take is awful, but Texas is like this and has been like this and will be like this, because it’s Texas, and it’s exhausting to drag its sorry ass along when it doesn’t want to be here.
