I wrote about the potential impact of some September callups for Insider, and held a Klawchat on Friday. I’m back on Baseball Tonight in the small hours this evening, with the show airing at 2:30 am Eastern.
This week’s links, from food science to gender bias in sports fanbases:
- The secrets of fake flavors. “Natural” flavors aren’t always what you think they are.
- How municipalities in St. Louis County, Mo., profit from poverty. A very long read that’s worth every word. It’s the new racism, which seems a lot like the old racism’s poll taxes and voter tests.
- Bud and Miller Are Trying to Hijack Craft Beer—and It’s Totally Backfiring. Reminds me of the day I learned Blue Moon was just Coors with different labeling. Screw that.
- Dr. James Andrews wants your young athlete to stay healthy by playing less. Story is over a year old, but more people are willing to hear the message due to the rash of elbow surgeries.
- Female hockey fandom and the good ol’ boys’ club. I guess it’s bias week here on the dish. I don’t think any male sport’s fan base or media contingent is particularly friendly to women.
Also, for fellow fans of melodic death metal, the upcoming In Flames album, Siren Charms, is available as a $5 pre-order through that link. I’m not that familiar with their work, but if anyone’s heard the new album, I’d love to hear your opinions.
Dr. Law,
As a medical expert, would you concur with Dr. Andrews’ medical opinions? Based on your training, would you care to shed any more light on the issue which you feel Dr. Andrews may not have adequately addressed?
Dr. Asshole (Eric),
Blow me.
I forbid you to talk about anything unless you have a Ph.D in said feel
I suspect sly sarcasm from Eric (referencing yesterday’s klawchat) and missing the point from Matt. On the other hand, if I’m wrong, I fully concur with Matt.
Question of ignorance – why does blue moon being made by coors suddenly become something you won’t drink? If you like it isn’t that good enough?
Just read through yesterday’s chat. A lot more mean-spirited “questions” than usual. Weird, and a little creepy. Following Keith here to continue the nastiness (if that is indeed Eric H’s intent) is why most comments sections turn into a cesspool of humanity. Eric, if your intentions were different, mea culpa.
No nastiness intended. Just running with the reference from yesterday’s chat.
Plus, relax people. Even if I were trying to needle Keith, he’s a big boy; and I’m sure he’s dealt with worse.
I understood Eric’s joke. And yes, Todd, I’ve noticed a higher frequency of rude or nasty questions coming in during chats. I’ll only take them if I can turn them into jokes, though.
Keith,
In response to the St. Louis County article and your take on the “racism” of enforcing laws…
““It is amazing how many people think they are doing blacks a favor by exempting them from standards that others are expected to meet.” -Thomas Sowell
Your response?
My response:
1. I never said enforcing the laws was racist.
2. Your tone and phrasing make your position quite clear, so there’s little point in discussing it here unless you simply want to provoke an argument – one I won’t give you, by the way.
Bruce: You’re an ass. Did you actually read the article? If so, you missed the point so badly that it makes me wonder if you completed third grade. If not, then you’re just being deliberately obtuse and provocative, and at the same time ignoring the important issues the article raises.
Either way, it reflects badly upon you.
Keith, unfortunate that you won’t engage as I’m genuinely curious about your position here. It seems like you’re saying that when people don’t have the money to pay for the consequences of their actions, and when those people happen to be black…RACISM. Am I misunderstanding you? If so, where am I going wrong?
