  1. Keith- I have a relative (non-foodie but still enjoys a good meal) traveling to Boston in the near future. She is vegetarian in the no Beef or Pork format.(She is almost convinced to start eating those again) Anyways she is on a 50 dollar per diem and eats power bars and the like for lunch.

Any suggestions? I made note of the bakeries you referenced in the LA eats a few months back. But any more high end dinner places? No idea what neighborhood she will be in but assume anything from Fenway over is fair game and include Cambridge. Only nice place I have been too is Blue Ginger but that is out in Wellesley and I had a simple salad cause I was sick and could not eat what I wanted at the time.

    Thanks

  2. Keith,

Any idea when your preview of the Futures game will be up?

  3. Daniel: Some time after I finish writing it, but before the game starts.

Dan: High-end dinner places around here isn’t my strong suit, but I would recommend Mistral, Toro (great tapas place, although it very much depends on what you order), and Excelsior (if only for the fries with rosemary aioli). Less expensive but also good – Parish Cafe and Stephanie’s.

  4. Excelsior closed due to the recession; the owner is going to open a new, slightly less expensive restaurant in its place.

I’d also recommend Pigalle, an excellent French restaurant with a prix fixe menu and excellent wine. Keith’s other suggestions are also quite good.

  5. Also, I’ve never been, but I’ve heard that Craigie on Main, in Cambridge, is outstanding.

  6. Thanks, malcolm. I did a quick google on Excelsior for that very reason, but didn’t click through to their site when it came up and looked “live” in the results. Whoops.

Oenophiles love Troquet, but as a beer drinker it did nothing for me. Have you tried it, malcolm?

  7. Keith,

Unfortunately, no. My friends and I had reservations to go one night, but we were still waiting to be seated after half an hour. We got exasperated and went to Pigalle instead, since it’s right around the corner. I’ve since moved from Boston, so it’s one of the places on my list to go to next time I visit.

  8. Keith/Malcolm,

I’m looking for good food recs in Boston as well, though I’m on a tighter budget. I’m visiting for 3 days next month (solo). What are some favorites? Thanks.

  9. Rick,

I used to live on Charles St in Beacon Hill, and my favorite place in the city is a little neighborhood restaurant there called 75 Chestnut. It’s mostly comfort food, but the atmosphere is wonderful, and the food is excellent. I think the most expensive dish is their filet mignon, at $24, and it was my go to entree. Most dishes, though, are between $15-20. Good place to go solo, too, because you can sit at the bar, have a drink, and munch on cheese and crackers while you wait for your food.

Good wine selection, but I’d always go with a Hendrick’s martini garnished with a cucumber; they do that really well also.

  10. Troquet is pretty fantastic, but not really cheap by any means (the suckling pig was great).

75 Chestnut is Ok, but I was turned off when I got Steak au poivre only to find a solid crust of full peppercorns on each side of the steak, after scraping it off it was still relatively inedible — the manager took an attitude when I suggested they tone it down. Great place for drinks though.

Good place on a budget is Silvertones, comfort food place with very cheap drinks/beers/wines by the bottle, it apparently is a favorite amongst the service industry. Pretty good crowd most nights.

Another idea is Casa Romero on Gloucester St.’upscale’ Mexican (think Mexican food that doesn’t depend on cheese) that is really good and pretty inexpensive.

Harvard Gardens (Cambridge St.) has pretty good, reasonable food, and a good bar scene if you’re flying solo.

I second Parish Cafe, the sandwiches there are killer and one of a relatively small number of places with outside seating when its warm.

FINALLY – a lot of places are offering reasonable prix fixe menus these days, we went to EVOO in Somerville recently ($35 for 3 courses – fantastic)

  11. So if someone no hits the Padres, does it still count?

  12. John,

Agreed on your other recommendations as well. Never had their steak au poivre, so I can’t comment on that, but if you feel like giving it another chance, I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed by either their filet or their seafood stew.

If you go a Tuesday, I think they have free cookies for dessert, too!

  13. Malcolm,
I think the last time I was there I had a basic tomato/basil/mozz pasta and it was good.

I forgot one last place, Helmand in Cambridge near the Galleria is a must try (you too Klaw). Entrees are ~$15 and the food is incredible (26 or 27 in Zagats). As a sidenote, apparently its run by Hamid Karzai’s brother.

  14. Preston,

Speaking for all Padre fans, no it does NOT count.

  15. John,

You are right, it is. I had a Guerrilla Warfare professor when I attended BU, and he was friendly with Karzai (and got him to speak at the ’05 commencement); he recommended it to me. Excellent food.

  16. Sorry to be this guy, but Kind is a neuter noun, so it would be Das Wunderkind.

    Sorry.

  17. Malcolm/John,
Thanks for the recs, I’ll definitely try a couple of them out.

  18. Anna’s Taqueria. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…
