Thursday chat.

It’s about 90% certain but I intend to do a Klawchat on Thursday at the usual time, 1 pm EST, although it will be 11 am and sunny and warm and not snow-covered here in Arizona. I also have a tentative hit on 710 ESPN on the Mason & Ireland show tomorrow, at something like 3 pm PDT. This will likely require me to drop the “Manny is going to sign with the Dodgers” shpiel I’ve been giving for four months in favor of a “I told you Manny was going to sign with the Dodgers” shpiel that will go stale in about four minutes.

I’m planning to see Mike Leake at ASU on Thursday night, so if you’re in the park, come by and say “hi,” preferably at some point when Leake is not actually pitching.

Posts will be sporadic this month, but I’ll try to at least write book reviews as I go. Currently almost done with Elizabeth Inchbald’s A Simple Story.

  1. Stuart Scott

    Keith,

Whilst at ASU, any chance of getting a look and a report on Josh Spence?

    cheers

    Stuart

  2. Who’s Manny?

  3. Keith – I was down in New Orleans and Baton Rouge this weekend to catch the LSU-UCF series. FYI, you’ve got to make a trip to see LSU’s new stadium – it’s fantastic.

It looked like there was some legit offensive players down there – especially in LSU’s outfield – Leon Landry, Jared Mitchell, and Chad Jones. I’d love to hear your take on those guys at some point.

  4. Stuart: Maybe later in the month when Arizona visits. Definitely not this week.

Jeff: I’ll see them again at the SEC tourney. Mitchell has tools but didn’t show much of a baseball clue when I saw him last year. Jones is apparently a future first-round pick in the NFL.

  5. Fantastic! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Leake!

  6. I’m not sure how I missed this the first time, but wasn’t it 10:00 AM in Arizona when it was 1:00 PM on the East coast?

  7. Aaron – Most of Arizona does not observe daylight savings time so the time is correct.

  8. Oh ok, gotcha. Thanks Clayton

  9. Any chance A’s fans will get to see an analysis of the O-Cab and Nomar signings?

  10. Keith,

I don’t know if you’ve ever been on with Mason & Ireland before. But be forewarned, they are a couple of grade A goobers. Good luck.

  11. Aaron M.: I have been, but they bailed on me last-minute today so I wasn’t on after all.

Todd: No, tied up with spring training and draft scouting now.

  12. Klaw, in your chat today, you included Rickey in your off-the-top-of-your-head top 10 list. I love Rickey too, but top 10 all-time really? I am just surprised because it was the only player you included from the last 40 years or so. And it was over Cobb, Aaron, Mays, Gehrig? I guess I didn’t realize how historically great he must have been.

  13. Bob, like he also said, ask him in a month he may have 5 of the same and 5 different. You can’t narrow it down to 10 (Keith said at the least 25) but yeah, Rickey is that good. Look at the OBP, SB (and how effective), power from leadoff, defense, blah blah blah, Rickey was the man.

The worst part. Tim Raines was the same player only not quite as good at everything, but still great, and gets no BBWAA love.

  14. Everyone else in the list was a last name, and there was no restriction that it had to be players. Are we sure that Rickey didn’t refer to Branch, instead of Henderson?

  15. Scott, that’s what I thought at first. We need Klaw to clear this up. Adn while I agree with everything Matt said about Rickey H, I did not think he was a strong defender.
