Love my readers! This was in the pool of questions for today’s chat:
(1420) Brian-Baltimore
Sorry. Definitely said it about Lincecum. I always knew you were the type that weasles out of his off base projections. You are too smug for your own good. That makes the whole blog you wrote about being true to your readership hollow.
The best part here is that Brian misunderstood what I was saying, and his mistake means that I’m a smug weasel! Excuse me – weasle. Although he was better than the reader who called me a “shitbag” because I didn’t answer his question.
Just curious, but what percentage of the folks submitting questions in your chats to be dopes who log in to every ESPN chat, and have no idea who you are?
Pretty low percentage. I have more people who are regular chatters with me, but who seem to really dislike me, which I totally do not get. You don’t like my writing/chats, but you show up every Thursday for two hours?
I like you, Keith. I was the one who did a poor job of saying I remember you saying that thing about Lincecum being a 120 inning pitcher and then later saying I was with you. I just get so caught up in the fervor sometimes I really do start to think that a .301 OBP can be valuable. Then I regain my senses.
How can he say you aren’t true to your readers?
Those of us that read both your blogs are totally aware that you’re a smug shitbag, but it’s hard to find a blog with baseball, literature, food info, AND perfect grammar. So, we accept, and even admire, your shit-filled smugness.
Chris, I believe the correct term was “Sultan of Snark.”
This guy gives Maryland a bad name. I won’t take it personally.
i’m surprised people complain about Keith not answering their questions in the chat when dozens (scores? hundreds? maybe even thousands?) of people are submitting questions to him. plus they have his blog on espn and his blog here to ask him questions, and his espn mailbag as well. i mean, i usually don’t get any of my questions answered in chat, aside from today, but i still enjoy everyone else’s questions
Aaron, I completly agree, and if I am reading this correctly, he had at least 1420 questions today. Furthermore, you could always compare the amount of questions he answers to a former GM of the Mets. Which begs the question: What does his mailbag look like?
I was disappointed you didn’t answer the favorite porn star question…..
Tim – Wouldn’t know how. I doubt I could name more than five, and I don’t watch the stuff anyway. Knowing that most of those women are there because at some point in life they were victims of sexual assault or abuse makes it a little skeevy to me.
When I read some of these chats, I wonder if people are seriously this angry and/or resentful. I consider myself a big sports fan since I can remember, but I think a lot of fans take this stuff far too personally. Keith, I know you’ve lampooned the “you hate my team/region/favorite player” arguments, as have others. Being an “insider” of sorts and having experience dealing with fans, do you feel fandom has changed? Do people generally have perspective? I feel people identify with a sports team *too much*, and I used to be included in that group. Sorry, kinda ran off with my rant.
I know you definitely don’t seem to be the kind of guy that watches porn Keith, I was just joking!
Keith, I do not know if you remember in the draft today someone quoted that Matusz was “the safest of the safe”. He is quoting me (inaccurately), and I quoted a scouting director who said he was “the safest player with upside” in the draft.
I do think he is the safest player in this draft and is as safe as safe can get. Barring an injury he WILL pitch innings in the majors. To what extent he is successful is a different story.
In regards to Jason’s observation – I would hazard a guess that the reason people seem more angry/confrontational/apoplectic is that it’s precisely those personalities that feel the need to have their opinions validated. More rational, even-tempered souls don’t necessarily fire off as many questions, and certainly don’t act as though it’s an assault on their intelligence when the questionee does not agree with them.
Ultimately, I don’t think it’s a case of a change in the fan landscape, I think it’s more of a selection bias that results in the nut jobs being more prominent.
Or it’s a bunch of 15 year olds.
You should pull a jay and silent bob and track down all the mothers who bad mouthed you!
Jonathan: I don’t agree that Matusz is all that safe. For one thing, I’d have a hard time tabbing a pitcher as safer than any position player in the pool. And for another, Matusz’ style of pitching isn’t “safe” for the big-league level – he throws more offspeed stuff than fastballs – and his delivery is awkward and would appear to put some stress on his shoulder.
Keith,
I live in the Central NJ area and I recall reading about a highly-touted prospect in the area. I want to say OF’er from Somerset? I wanted to catch a look prior to HS season’s end. I believe you scouted him last month, but I couldn’t find the post. Sorry for the lack of specifics.
Q
Francis, it might be Matt Marquis.
Bob,
I believe it is. Thank you very much for the name.

Keith, agreed his mechanics leave alot to be desired..and pitchers get hurt much more than position players…but, I do not think it is such an awful thing he has the ability to pitch backwards if need be. Shows he can battle when he does not have his best stuff, which is paramount in becoming a good pitcher (ask Clay Buchholtz)
Keith, does it make you wonder sometimes when Joe Morgan mails it in with a 10 question “chat” the other day while you give up 2 hours of your time?
