AP story on Gygax’ death

How many times will we see this referenced in sports columnist rants against statistical analysis over the next week?

  1. Deaths come in threes. So whoever invented the mother’s basement better watch his step.

  2. I actually met Gygax 2-3 years ago in a legal situation involving his mountainous debt. Very likable, gentle guy. Bemoaned the rise of computer-based gaming, which you’d expect.

  3. i didnt know his wife’s name was gail. thats a lot of alliteration. AD&D is a great game. im going to go play some living greyhawk in his honor.

  4. @Ronaldo: +1. Hell, +1,000,000.

  5. Man. I feel like I lost a relative.

Rest in peace, Gary. Thanks for the memories.

  6. Must’ve lost his saving throw . . .

OK, that was bad taste. I played a lot of AD&D in my youth, so this news saddens me.

  7. You have to love PA’s tribute:

I think you want this PA link:

Otherwise you’ll just get the current comic, which isn’t usually Gygax related.

You know, all this D&D retrospective stuff makes me think we haven’t gone far enough with baseball statistics. Until we can model a ballplayer and infallibly simulate all his on-field actions with a Euclidian regular solid inscribed with numbers, our mission can never be complete.

Just think of the fun! “Potion of Andro = +2 Str!” “Sosa’s Complex Corkage = +1 to Swing, -6 Charisma on Critical Miss” “Invocation of The Contract Year = +2 to All Stats” “Chipper’s Magic Greenies +3 to Haste”.

    And so on…
