I’ll be on The Hot List on ESPNEWS today at 4:20 pm EST, discussing the Bedard deal and some offseason winners and losers.
Update: There’s a clip of part of the appearance here.
The collected thoughts of sportswriter, bookworm, & food critic Keith Law
Dug the reliever comment re: Ed Wade and Valverde.
Completely missed it…can I get a small recap?
The video is on ESPN.com/mlb. It’s called “Who Had MLB’s Best and Worst Off Season’s?” (improper punctuation and all)
Keith, you have an obvious bias against teams that competed in the 2005 World Series and still believe that it’s 2005!!! you’ll be proved wrong when the White Sox and the Astros both finish 1st (4th?) in their respective divisions.
On a more serious note, wouldn’t the Giants also qualify for worst off-season? I mean, Aaron Rowand for 5 years? No viable 3B for even 1 season? 1.25 power hitters in the lineup (dispersed over 7 players)?
Great appearance on the four-letter; from what I can see on the website, anyway. I’d definitely agree that the Scott Linebrink move is puzzling, and you provided great insight into the Jose Valverde move to Houston. Kudos.
I’d also agree with Aaron B in that the Giants haven’t really had a great offseason. I’m a fan of Aaron Rowand, but 5 years is indeed a questionable move, and there’s just no youth in that starting lineup.
I concur with the kudos on the depth of your analysis. I wonder, though, why everyone thinks the Cubs did so well this past offseason? Sure, Fukudome seems to be the left-handed, high OBP the team needed. But he is coming off of surgery and no one knows how he’ll do in MLB. Other than that, they only have 2 proven starters and still need a lot of help. Granted, their division is lousy but isn’t the point to be able to go beyond the division?
Nice shirt and tie combo. No double windsor, though?
