I’ll be on ESPN Radio (the national feed) at 9 pm tonight to discuss the Santana deal. My writeup should be on the site shortly thereafter.
UPDATE: I also recorded a bit with Jason Smith for AllNight, although I’m not sure what time it will air. It’s often available next day as a podcast.
Keith, is there a link for us Canucks to listen to?
Is there anyway 6 years/$150M is a good investment for the Mets? I weep when I think that the Rays raised their payroll 70% this season, and it’s still only $40M. Ugh.
Or just the name of the show. It there seem to be many shows available on espnradio.go.espn.com
Eric, I’m listening on the regular ESPN radio stream.
Suffering through Steve Phillips right now.
Says he would’ve given anything Bill Smith wanted to get Santana if he were a major league GM. No comment necessary.
I disagree Pete. A comment is necessary. So, here it is.
It’s because stupid statements like the aforementioned one that prevent Phillips from being a GM.
…He’s just really bad.
Sorry for the double comment, just wanted to say thanks Keith for getting your analysis of the trade onto free insider. Much appreciated.
Steve Phillips really makes me question what it takes for one to become a MLB GM. Keith could you enlighten me on what if any qualifications it takes to become a GM? I know some GM’s seem to be very intelligent and understand quite a bit about the game as well as analysis. However others seem to lack even a basic understanding of how to win and/or build a team (this comes from someone who gets to watch and hear Bill Bavasi all the time).
I am always, always, ALWAYS shocked when I hear or watch Steve Phillips on the four letter…and realize he was once a GM.
Seriously now. I always critique various moves made by General Managers because that’s something I enjoy doing with the sport I love. But I always remember that these men know what they’re doing and deserve that basic acknowledgement from the get go.
Steve Phillips seriously makes me wonder about that last part. Some of what he says is just plain amazing in the worst ways, no pun intended.
Steve Phillips was not that bad of a GM for the Mets. Sure he was responsible for the Kazmir debacle, however:
(1) He drafted David Wright and Kazmir.
(2) Signed Jose Reyes
(3) Signed Mike Piazza
(4) Composed the two playoff teams of 1999 and 2000
The guy is one of the worst analysts on ESPN. He might eve. be as bad as Joe Morgan; but lets give the man his due. He built some good teams and signed some good players.
That’s the thing. He made some brilliant moves and deserves credit and respect for that. And of course he made some awful ones too, just like any GM has. It’s just so hard to understand why he seems to have such a ridiculous approach to studying the game when on ESPN. Some of what he says, not just tonight, is unfathomable.
I hate Steve Phillips as an analyst as much as just about anyone, but I have to clarify this: He did NOT trade Kazmir. That was Jim Duquette.
That said, Steve Phillips is not bright. To paraphrase: “He’s the best pitcher in baseball!!!! One year of him is worth the entire farm! Who cares that you have to pay him 25 million for 6 years? The Yankees can afford it! They need to do whatever is necessary to get that ace!”
Seriously, Keith, great analysis on the Santana deal, but good lord is that comments section depressing.
“Mets SUCK!!!”
“NO! YAnks suck!!!”
“OH, im soory how many championchips have the mets won? TWENTY SIX FOR THE YNAKS!!!!!”
“Phils still tje team to beat!! CHoke on thant METS FANS!”
Will Prospectus take you back?
This trade has a chance to bode well for more teams than just the Mets. I think it benefits the Yankees (because he’s not a Red Sox) and it benefits the Red Sox (because he’s not a Yankee). But it also benefits the White Sox. Look at his splits from last year. He was 3-1 against the White Sox, but 0-5 against Cleveland and 1-3 against Detroit. Granted his 1-8 record against Cleveland and Detroit would probably not be duplicated in 2008, but he’s gone 10-2 against the White Sox since 2005. The fact that they won’t have to face him anymore is terrific news for them.
The trade is not even official yet. Everybody so hold your horses. There are physicals to pass, a contract extension to agree for the no-trade clause to disappear. I am still hoping the find bone chips in his arm. Oh, the irony.
I’ve been thinking about it and it seems like there aren’t enough people in the world who aren’t brain addled. Just purely from a statistical point of view. I say this because every so often after reading an article (news, sports, television, movies, yeah that’s pretty much all I read about) online, I’ll click on the little comments link and I am astounded at the idiocy being spouted. There seems to be no interest in grammar, spelling or syntax and even less interest in a comprehensible point. It’s enough to lead one to wonder if only idiots use the Internet. Which is sad, because I use the internet, and I like me.
