She won her case when a jury in Naperville determined that she did not knowingly take the AirPods (she thought they were hers and returned them when approached), and the story highlights the use of police in schools for incidents that could be handled first by school officials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The man who shot a California store owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-news\/california-store-owner-mother-nine-shot-killed-pride-flag-displayed-sh-rcna100849\">for flying a Pride flag<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/n7ed4q\/laura-carleton-pride-flag-shooting\">a far-right conspiracy theorist<\/a> who followed the religious zealot Matt Walsh and espoused false-flag hoaxes and climate change denial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Oppenheimer<\/em> left out a key part of the history of nuclear weapons: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-dark-history-oppenheimer-didnt-show\/\">the exploitation of Congolese people who mined the uranium ore by hand<\/a>, including a massacre of workers who tried to bargain for higher wages in 1941.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This 2022 article from Vice explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/qjb9m3\/manuscript-cafe-japan-remote-work-writing-productivity\">productivity cafes<\/a>, a Japanese trend of coffee shops and bars where you tell the employees the task you\u2019re trying to finish when you enter and they won\u2019t let you leave until you\u2019ve finished (e.g., writing a chapter).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FIFA just temporarily suspended Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish football federation, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/66621772\">he kissed Spanish player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent<\/a> and subsequently claimed that she did consent in the wake of calls for him to resign.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Maine hospital is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/news\/maine-hospital-threatens-defamation-lawsuit-over-15-year-olds-changeorg-petition\">threatening to sue a 15-year-old college student for defamation<\/a> over his petition calling for increased patient safety at their facility. FIRE has stepped in to demand that Northern Light retract the threat, citing Maine\u2019s anti-SLAPP law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guitar legend Carlos Santana <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2023\/08\/carlos-santana-anti-trans-speech\/\">went on a bizarre anti-trans rant<\/a> during a recent concert in Atlantic City.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A goal that seemed impossible just a few years ago is in sight \u2013 we might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-02577-7\">be able to eradicate wild polio in the wild<\/a>, which would make it just the third disease we\u2019ve eradicated after smallpox and rinderpest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delaware has joined the growing list of states and cities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2023\/08\/23\/delaware-governor-john-carney-signs-law-ban-restaurant-polystyrene-foam-food-containers-plastic-use\/70660318007\/\">prohibiting restaurants from using polystyrene containers<\/a>, which don\u2019t break down in landfills and can leach chemicals into the water supply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Baltimore Banner<\/em> once again calls out Orioles owner\/failson John Angelos for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebaltimorebanner.com\/sports\/orioles-mlb\/angelos-orioles-stadium-lease-goon-BKD5EDEC5NBABFE2OVV53JQIP4\/\">how his antics are overshadowing the team\u2019s incredible season<\/a>.
