But I\u2019ll have a lot of content up in the next few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks ago, I appeared on the video podcast Shelf Stories to discuss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-U0UJQAiUWI\">ethics in board game media<\/a> and questions of integrity and professionalism among folks who review games or otherwise cover the space, along with former Kotaku writer Luke Plunkett. It\u2019s a long discussion but I greatly enjoyed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Longreads first: The <em>New York Times<\/em> has a long adaptation from an upcoming book about how a California high school was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/17\/magazine\/california-high-school-racist-instagram.html\">torn apart by an Instagram account that posted racist memes<\/a> about students there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Nature<\/em> discusses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-02554-0\">the impact of scientists leaving or cutting back on Twitter use<\/a>, allowing anti-science and denialism to fester there \u2013 and that ran before Elon threatened, again, to terminate the site\u2019s block function.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Times<\/em> also had a piece about three weeks ago looking into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/25\/magazine\/covid-start.html\">the continuing mystery over the origins of COVID-19<\/a>, arguing that the public\u2019s greater belief in the lab-leak conspiracy theory \u2013 any hypothesis of a lab leak remains stubbornly unsupported by evidence \u2013 is a function of distrust of authorities and the competition between narratives, not a question of facts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By now you\u2019ve likely read about <a href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/2023\/08\/11\/police-stage-chilling-raid-on-marion-county-newspaper-seizing-computers-records-and-cellphones\/?utm_source=pocket_saves\">Kansas cops raiding the offices of a small, local newspaper<\/a>, after which the paper\u2019s 98-year-old owner died. It turns out that the cops did so to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehandbasket.substack.com\/p\/a-conversation-with-the-newspaper\">try to prevent the paper from writing about a local restaurant owner\u2019s DUI<\/a>, which would have prohibited the woman, Kari Newell, from obtaining a liquor license. The county attorney has said there was <a href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/2023\/08\/17\/kobach-kbi-looking-into-possible-data-breach-in-kansas-newspaper-case\/\">insufficient evidence to support the warrant<\/a> the cops obtained, and there\u2019s now a complaint against the judge, Laura Viar, who signed it. The editorial boards of the <em>Kansas City Star <\/em>and <em>Wichita Eagle<\/em> co-published an editorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansas.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article278199777.html\">calling the raid \u201can intolerable overreach.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why did a Missouri judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riverfronttimes.com\/news\/salacious-report-at-center-of-post-dispatch-court-battle-40684337\">grant a restraining order preventing the <em>St. Louis Post-Dispatch <\/em>from publishing details<\/a> of an accused cop killer\u2019s mental health evaluation? This seems like a First Amendment violation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meanwhile, Wisconsin State Senator Cory Tomczyk, a Republican, called a 13-year-old kid a homophobic slur at a county meeting in August of 2021, according to several people who witnessed it, but he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2023\/08\/gop-lawmaker-allegedly-called-a-child-fg-hes-suing-a-newspaper-for-reporting-on-it\/\">trying to sue a local newspaper out of existence just for reporting on it<\/a>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don\u2019t know why this story has received so little attention: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-66486236\">A 3-year-old girl who was trafficked by Texas state officials died<\/a> while on a a so-called \u201cmigrant bus.\u201d I couldn\u2019t find articles on this in the <em>Times<\/em> (either one) or <em>Washington Post<\/em>, for example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/delos\/story\/2023-07-26\/oppenheimer-atomic-bomb-new-mexico-cancer-aftermath\">the people who actually lived near the nuclear test sites<\/a> depicted as remote and unpopulated in <em>Oppenheimer<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NPR summarizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/14\/1193557432\/florida-education-private-schools-prageru-desantis\">some of the indoctrination awaiting Florida public school students<\/a> as they return to the classroom this month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Montana judge <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-change-youth-montana-trial-c7fdc1d8759f55f60346b31c73397db0\">ruled in favor of young climate-change activists who sued the state<\/a>, arguing that Montana\u2019s policy preventing state agencies from considering greenhouse gas emission potential when evaluating permits for fossil fuel development is unconstitutional. It\u2019s largely symbolic, but could present a path for similar suits elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Baltimore Banner<\/em>\u2019s Kyle Goon tears apart Orioles failson\/owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebaltimorebanner.com\/sports\/orioles-mlb\/john-angelos-baltimore-orioles-stadium-lease-camden-yards-baseball-relocation-kyle-goon-NNBC6YT5EBDPRCPYI6FDKYKJ4I\/\">John Angelos\u2019s bid for more state money along with a land grab around Camden Yards<\/a>. Meanwhile, Orioles announcer Kevin Brown issued <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/mlb\/kevin-brown-orioles-booth-relationship-return-friday.html\">a statement nobody believes<\/a> that tried to defuse reports that he was suspended for citing facts about the team\u2019s past performance. In the Orioles\u2019 best season in a decade, leave it to John Angelos to muck it up with this clownery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new state tax in Massachusetts that levies an extra 4% on incomes over a million dollars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/massachusetts-millionaires-tax-free-lunch-every-kid\/\">will raise $1 billion for FY2024<\/a>, and the proceeds will pay for free school lunches for all kids in the state, among other things (I assume). Unfortunately, this article\u2019s author confuses wealth with income, referring to \u201cthe state\u2019s wealthiest residents.\u201d Income and wealth are not the same thing, and taxing each is a very different process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From last month, Katherine Miller wrote in the <em>New York Times<\/em> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/20\/opinion\/no-labels-election-2024.html\">the farcical No Labels party<\/a>, which won\u2019t reveal its funding sources and seems more interested in re-electing Donald Trump than pushing an actual new \u201ccentrist\u201d platform (as if Democrats weren\u2019t closer to the center than the progressive left anyway).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Atlantic<\/em> points out that asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2023\/08\/phoenix-record-excessive-heat-wave-streak\/674924\/\">why people keep moving to the Phoenix area<\/a> ignores the broader questions of cheap energy and housing that drive it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Board game news: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/insideupgames\/perch-0\">Kickstarter for Perch<\/a> launched this week and is already about 250% funded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve got a piece filed to run on Monday or Tuesday at The Athletic, and another review coming up this week at Paste, but had nothing new up this week.
