I\u2019ll be back at work on Monday, although my next article probably won\u2019t run until later in the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was quite busy leading up to the trade deadline. It\u2019s wonderfully written and centers the people without ever leering at or patronizing them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Washington Post <\/em>looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/07\/16\/fondomonte-arizona-drought-saudi-farm-water\/\">how a Saudi company is draining scarce water resources in Arizona<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>New Yorker<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2023\/08\/14\/how-sudan-archives-became-the-violins-domme\">profiled Sudan Archives<\/a>, whose album <em>Natural Brown Prom Queen<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/21\/top-22-albums-of-2022\/\">my #2 LP of 2022<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ed Yong announced he\u2019s leaving The Atlantic (not my employer), but he did file a long piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2023\/07\/chronic-fatigue-long-covid-symptoms\/674834\/\">the shattering effects of long COVID<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ProPublica continues to show how Harlan Crow bought himself a Supreme Court vote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/harlan-crow-slashed-tax-bill-clarence-thomas-superyacht\">by treating Clarence Thomas to cruises on his yacht<\/a>, securing Thomas\u2019 support in cases that affected Crow\u2019s tax bill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ohio voters rejected the state Republican party\u2019s bid to make it harder for voters to pass constitutional amendments. That ballot question, which lost badly in the election this past Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2023\/08\/ohio-special-election-is-being-fueled-by-out-of-state-billionaires.html\">was boosted by about $4 million from the U-Line company\u2019s owners<\/a>. If you own or work at a company that\u2019s shipping any kind of goods, don\u2019t buy your boxes and materials from U-Line. And if you get a package from anyone in a box made by U-Line, ask them to find another vendor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/07\/25\/texas-a-m-professor-opioids-dan-patrick\/\">Texas A&amp;M suspended a professor<\/a> for criticizing the state\u2019s Lt. Governor, Dan Patrick (R). Which is the party of freedom and liberty? And which supports cancel culture?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The President of Stanford has resigned after an investigation found <a href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2023\/07\/19\/stanford-president-resigns-over-manipulated-research-will-retract-at-least-3-papers\/\">manipulated research in three papers he co-authored<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also from the <em>Post<\/em>, a moving story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/08\/09\/unique-harris-case\/\">about a missing persons case from 13 years ago<\/a> that the reporter who covered it couldn\u2019t shake, and what it meant when the criminal case was finally solved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cory Doctorow points out how Tesla used its proprietary, DRM-protected software to tell drivers <a href=\"https:\/\/pluralistic.net\/2023\/07\/28\/edison-not-tesla\/\">their cars had longer ranges than they actually did<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Efforts to reduce the population of the <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquito, which spreads numerous diseases including malaria and dengue, may <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/eenews\/2023\/08\/04\/scientists-are-releasing-disease-resistant-mosquitoes-but-heat-waves-could-kill-them-00109764?utm_source=pocket_saves\">end up thwarted by climate change<\/a>. Several groups have released mosquitos infected with the <em>Wolbachia <\/em>bacterium, which makes the mosquitos\u2019 offspring nonviable, but that bacterium can\u2019t survive when temperatures are regularly 95 degrees and above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This still seems so hard to believe, but scientists at the Livermore lab have used lasers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/aug\/06\/us-scientists-achieve-net-energy-gain-second-time-fusion-reaction\">to start a fusion reaction that created more energy than it required<\/a>, which, in theory, could solve the looming energy crisis. I\u2019m old enough to remember the \u201ccold fusion\u201d hoax, though, so I\u2019d like to see a lot more of this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Scientific American<\/em> looks at how the four-color map problem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-a-doodlers-problem-sparked-a-controversy-in-math\/\">was solved via brute force<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Donanemab may finally offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-66221116\">a huge step forward in the treatment of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, with trials showing it can reduce cognitive decline in early-stage patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RFK Jr\u2019s conspiracy theory-laden campaign promises to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/07\/rfk-jr-ab-2098-california-misinformation-doctors\/?\">make it easier for doctors to spread medical misinformation<\/a>. Meanwhile, Sherri Tenpenny, who\u2019s been pushing anti-vax garbage for probably twenty years now and claimed that COVID-19 vaccines would make people magnetic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/open\/2023\/08\/this-doctor-said-vaccines-magnetize-people-ohio-suspended-her-medical-license.html\">had her medical license suspended by the state of Ohio<\/a> for her failure to comply with an investigation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, an independent reporter unveils <a href=\"https:\/\/www.importantcontext.news\/p\/who-is-funding-the-brownstone-institute\">who\u2019s funding the COVID-19 misinformation outfit the Brownstone Institute<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is almost a month old but it still holds up: <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/174327\/ron-desantis-ron-desantis-problem\">Ron DeSantis has a Ron DeSantis problem<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texas took over the Houston Independent School District and is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2023\/07\/26\/hisd-to-eliminate-librarians-turn-libraries-into-discipline-centers-at-28-campuses\/?utm_source=pocket_saves\">closing the libraries at 28 schools there to convert them into <s>jails<\/s> discipline centers<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WBEZ in Chicago published video showing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/stories\/interrogation-video-shows-how-cop-got-teens-false-confession\/7db602c6-0e44-4d69-82d5-f2280442a0f9?utm_source=pocket_saves\">Waukegan cops coercing a false confession from a 15-year-old<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Footage emerged in Los Angeles of a sheriff\u2019s department deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jul\/13\/la-sheriff-office-deputy-punches-mother-baby\">punching a mother who was holding her baby<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NPR examines the rising number of people without housing in this country and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/07\/12\/1186856463\/homelessness-rent-affordable-housing-encampments\">offers four reasons why we can\u2019t solve this issue<\/a>, although I think they ignored the reason that most voters won\u2019t actually give up anything to help. Homelessness is someone else\u2019s problem to way too many people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As every media entity on earth tries to be cool by celebrating hip-hop\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, the BBC notes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20230807-the-last-poets-and-watts-prophets-the-radical-poets-overshadowed-by-hip-hop\">several pioneers who\u2019ve been \u201cwritten out of (rap) history,\u201d<\/a> including the Last Poets, the Watts Brothers, and Gil Scott-Heron, the last of whom you might at least know as the author of the poem \u201cThe Revolution Will Not Be Televised.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>San Diego\u2019s Juniper and Ivy might be my favorite restaurant in the country, and I was just there again in April. They\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiego.eater.com\/2023\/7\/11\/23791078\/juniper-ivy-restaurant-new-prix-fixe-menu-chefs-tasting-little-italy-san-diego\">switched to a prix fixe menu for August<\/a> that may be temporary, although I wonder if this is a trial balloon of sorts. I\u2019ll still go there any time I\u2019m in the best city in the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m not a big Starbucks customer; I don\u2019t care for their coffee, although they do have good tea, and they offer a decent place to sit and work for a bit while I\u2019m on the road. I\u2019m going to have to rethink that as long as they\u2019re engaging in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/21\/opinion\/starbucks-union-strikes-labor-movement.html\">a massive, dirty war against their own employees\u2019 attempts to assert their right to organize<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Board game news: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/sinisterfish\/wizards-and-co\">Kickstarter for Wizards &amp; Co.<\/a> is complete but you can still pre-order the game, which comes from the designers of games like Egizia, Coimbra, Lorenzo il Magnifico, and Alma Mater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mistwind, designed by Daryl Andrews and Adrian Adamescu (Sagrada), is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1812622835\/mistwind\">about six times past its funding goal on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fourth Iron Rail game, Age of Rail: South Africa, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/capstonegames\/iron-rail-4-age-of-rail-plus-metal-trains\">just three days to go on its Kickstarter<\/a>. I have to admit I was not a fan of Iberian Gauge, the second in the series.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The next game from Elizabeth Hargrave (Wingspan) is Undergrove, which I believe is going to Kickstarter this fall.
