James Clyburn (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/how-rep-james-clyburn-protected-his-district-at-a-cost-to-black-democrats\">conspired with Republicans to gerrymander his way into a safer seat<\/a>, and how a former NFL player has sold \u201cchild ID kits\u201d to eleven states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/kenny-hansmire-persuades-politicians-to-fund-child-id-kits\">despite no evidence they work and free alternatives already available<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/nypd-kawaski-trawick-killing-investigation-questions\">how NYPD investigators never even asked for footage<\/a> showing that one officer tried to stop his partner from killing an unarmed Black man. The investigators cleared both officers of any wrongdoing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new research paper found, once again, that <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4443118\">sports stadiums\/facilities do not generate enough ancillary economic activity to justify their costs to taxpayers<\/a> when subsidized by the government. This <em>Boston Business Journal<\/em> piece covers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/boston\/news\/2023\/05\/18\/polar-park-project-worcester-deficit.html\">the paper\u2019s examination of Polar Park in Worcester<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NBC News has a longread on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/woodland-park-colorado-school-board-conservatives-rcna83311\">how conservatives took over the school board in Woodland Park, Colorado<\/a>, ushering in a right-wing curriculum, forcing out employees who spoke out, and engaging in apparent self-dealing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> spoke to a number of Florida teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/may\/13\/florida-teachers-woke-law-ron-desantis\">about their experiences under the state\u2019s draconian new laws restricting their speech and lesson content<\/a>, with several saying they\u2019re considering leaving the state and\/or the profession. Florida already has a severe teacher shortage, by the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The science behind reverse osmosis filtering was unclear, until a paper published in April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/everyone-was-wrong-about-reverse-osmosis-until-now\/\">upended the previous model<\/a> and opened up the possibility of new membranes that make filtration, including desalination, more energy-efficient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A conservative \u201cfoundation\u201d recruited fifteen men at a Poughkeepsie homeless shelter <a href=\"https:\/\/midhudsonnews.com\/2023\/05\/19\/homeless-men-recruited-for-veteran-hotel-scam\/?utm_source=pocket_saves\">to pretend they were veterans kicked out of a hotel<\/a> to make room for migrants coming up from New York City. The plan fooled state Assemblyman Brian Maher (R), who fed the outrage machine until he had to admit he\u2019d been had.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Philly Inquirer<\/em> has a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/pig-butchering-online-dating-cryptocurrency-scam-20230510.html\">a victim of the romance scam known as \u2018pig butchering\u2019<\/a> who ended up out $450,000 to a con artist she met on Hinge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcn.org\/articles\/south-non-native-species-a-weed-is-swallowing-the-sonoran-desert\">An invasive weed known as stinknet has taken over Arizona\u2019s Sonoran desert<\/a>, fueling wildfires, crowding out native species, and causing lung problems for nearby residents. And it\u2019s spreading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The executive director of the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana wrote in the <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/05\/10\/kinsey-institute-indiana-legislature-state-funds\/\">about the Republican-controlled state government\u2019s attack on the institute<\/a>, which prohibits the university from using any state funds to support the institute. It\u2019s culture-war bullshit that impedes important research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bryan Slaton has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/may\/09\/republican-drag-shows-danger-for-kids-resigns-misconduct-intern\">resigned his post in the Texas legislature<\/a> after it emerged that he\u2019d behaved inappropriately with an intern. The Republican once introduced legislation to ban children from attending drag shows, claiming it was some form of grooming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/05\/13\/austin-dell-childrens-gender-affirming\/\">doctors at Austin\u2019s Dell Clinic who were treating trans kids there are leaving<\/a> after the state\u2019s under-indictment AG Ken Paxton announced an investigation into the facility after the duplicitous far-right Project Veritas claimed it was conducting surgery on kids as young as eight. The <em>Texas Observer <\/em>found documents from the also right-wing American College of Pediatricians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasobserver.org\/monty-bennett-acpeds-genecis-transphobia-sb14\/\">setting out a playbook for how to defund trans care in Texas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The current moral panic over trans kids is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/anti-trans-moral-panics-endanger-all-young-people\/\">a larger effort to control the lives of American youths<\/a>, argues researcher Dr. Chris Pepin-Neff in <em>Scientific American<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Richard Uilhein, the right-wing billionaire owner of U-Line, <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2023\/05\/02\/billionaire-backing-effort-to-raise-ohio-amendment-threshold-funded-election-deniers-jan-6-rally\/?utm_source=pocket_saves\">is one of the chief backers of the proposed Ohio amendment<\/a> that will make it harder for future amendments to pass by raising the threshold from 50% to 60%. Don\u2019t buy from U-Line!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ohio Republicans are trying to follow Florida\u2019s lead <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2023\/05\/18\/ohio-senate-passes-massive-higher-education-overhaul-bill-house-version-hears-opponent-testimony\/\">in banning DEI programs at state universities and mandating their sort of indoctrination<\/a> in the classroom, along with the definitely not problematic proposal to base tenure on whether a professor taught with \u201cbias.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I know you\u2019re shocked, but Iowa\u2019s new law allowing residents to use school vouchers for private and even religious schools <a href=\"https:\/\/iowastartingline.com\/2023\/05\/12\/kim-reynolds-private-school-voucher-plan-led-to-tuition-hikes\/\">has led many of those schools to raise tuition in response<\/a>. You\u2019d think they might have learned from the national student loan fiasco.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nebraska legislator Megan Hunt is the hero we need. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/05\/19\/2023\/megan-hunt-doesnt-want-to-be-your-democratic-hero\">Just don\u2019t call her a Democrat<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I agree with everything in this Mary Sue post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarysue.com\/ted-lasso-has-gone-off-the-rails\/?\">the disappointing S3 of <em>Ted Lasso<\/em><\/a>, which has none of the things that made the show good in its first two seasons.
