Utah legislators could just change the law, but they\u2019re too busy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/5d37j8\/utahs-gop-governor-defends-bill-banning-gender-affirming-care-for-transgender-youth\">trying to kill trans kids<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20230220-is-air-pollution-causing-us-to-lose-our-sense-of-smell\">Air pollution might be causing us to lose our sense of smell<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Appeal has stories of <a href=\"https:\/\/theappeal.org\/pregnant-people-shackled-abused-crisis-harris-county-jail\/?\">pregnant people who\u2019ve been shackled and abused while in custody in Harris County, Texas, jails<\/a>, the same jail system that saw 28 prisoners die last year and four already in 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>De la Soul\u2019s catalog is supposed to come to streaming platforms in March. Over $5.5 million in total funds from those programs went to residents of the 75 wealthiest ZIP codes in the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>New Republic<\/em> is one of the few outlets doing real reporting on the effects of the train derailment and chemical release in East Palestine, Ohio, such as this article <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/170570\/life-ohio-train-derailment-trouble-breathing-dying-animals-saying-goodbye\">on dying animals and residents\u2019 respiratory distress<\/a>, and this editorial on <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/170628\/conspiracy-ohio-train-derailment-right-front-us\">the fake conspiracy theories around it and the real corruption that allowed it all to happen<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There\u2019s a network of neo-Nazi home-schoolers operating in Ohio, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/5d37d3\/ohio-doe-nazi-dissident-homeschool\">the state says they can\u2019t do anything about it<\/a>. Maybe if they were teaching critical race theory and trans rights?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biden\u2019s EPA has streamlined a program to approve alternatives to fossil fuels that originally covered biofuels but also includes fuels made from recycled plastics \u2013 even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/feb\/23\/climate-friendly-us-program-plastics-fuel-cancer\">one such process is likely to release a highly carcinogenic byproduct into the atmosphere<\/a>. And the EPA won\u2019t release details of the process, right down to the names of the chemicals involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The majority-Black city of Jackson, Mississippi, is likely to end up with a separate, state-run court district <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/02\/09\/1155827686\/why-a-majority-black-city-could-wind-up-with-a-new-white-appointed-court-system\">with judges appointed entirely by white politicians<\/a>, thanks to a Republican-authored bill that already passed the state\u2019s lower chamber.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A police officer in Pueblo County, Colorado, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/02\/21\/richard-ward-pueblo-sheriff-office-shooting\/\">shot and killed an unarmed man in the car line outside a school<\/a> because the man got into the wrong car by mistake. Video shows the officer gave no warning and neither he nor his partner gave the victim, 32-year-old Richard Ward, any assistance as he bled to death on the ground. The DA declined to charge the officers, saying they \u201cjustifiably feared for their lives.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/20\/books\/roald-dahl-books-changes.html\">A publisher planned to revise several of Roald Dahl\u2019s books to remove potentially offensive language<\/a>, but after criticism it appears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-64759118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they relented<\/a>. I have a lot of thoughts on this, most of them opposing the effort. You can\u2019t undo history, and art is a comment and reflection of its time. With a children\u2019s book, you always have the choice not to read the book to your kids, or to read it in full and explain why some language or imagery is inappropriate or offensive. I\u2019m also not sure what good this does for books with millions of copies in print.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>New York Times<\/em> White House correspondent Peter Baker <a href=\"https:\/\/thecolumn.substack.com\/p\/to-nyts-peter-baker-acknowledging\">has a history of activism through his work and his social media commentary<\/a>. He also criticized journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2023\/02\/new-york-times-contributors-glaad-and-many-others-criticize-times-coverage-of-trans-people\/?utm_source=pocket_saves\">who argued that the paper\u2019s coverage of trans issues has been slanted<\/a> when he co-signed a letter calling them \u201cactivists.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From the Onion: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonion.com\/it-is-journalism-s-sacred-duty-to-endanger-the-lives-of-1850126997\">It Is Journalism\u2019s Sacred Duty To Endanger The Lives Of As Many Trans People As Possible<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6254500\/turkey-earthquake-twitter-musk-rescue\/\">The chaos and breakdowns within Twitter hampered rescue efforts<\/a> after this month\u2019s earthquake that killed thousands in Turkey and Syria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalobserver.com\/2023\/02\/10\/analysis\/russian-propaganda-freedom-convoy-disinformation?utm_source=pocket_saves\">Russia used state media to support Canada\u2019s so-called \u201cFreedom Convoy\u201d<\/a> that protested the country\u2019s attempts to limit the spread of COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I grew up in Smithtown, New York, and from kindergarten through twelfth grade I attended public schools in that district, which is now further embarrassing itself by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/another-long-island-school-district-is-adding-armed-guards-to-campus\/4109062\/\">adding armed guards at its schools<\/a> despite no actual evidence that these prevent mass shootings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Board game news: The small publisher Holy Grail Games <a href=\"https:\/\/holygrail.games\/?fbclid=IwAR1FhXkYgZ-60x3crV6cbYGLtok4vQuMOQI1CAyYq91wSBWi1YJuVMVikKs\">announced they\u2019re shutting down<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>25<sup>th<\/sup> Century Games has a Kickstarter up for three new tile-laying games: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/chadelkins\/agueda-color-field-and-donut-shop\">Agueda, Color Field, and Donut Shop<\/a>.
