It\u2019s a bit like 7 Wonders meets Century Spice Road, but with a little more to it than that might imply. Life is full of uncertainties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Toronto Star<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2023\/02\/05\/jamie-sale-was-canadas-sweetheart-on-ice-now-the-olympian-is-championing-something-darker.html?rf&amp;position=4&amp;scheduled_corpus_item_id=c19047c8-10c9-4d61-aa74-1ac37127f373&amp;sponsored=0&amp;utm_source=pocket_saves\">the fall of Jamie Sal\u00e9 into conspiracy theory and denialism<\/a>. The 2002 Olympic gold medalist, previously best known as one of the two skaters originally cheated out of the gold by corrupt judges, has become a COVID and vaccine denialist \u2013 and, of course, now she\u2019s trying to profit off these false views.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has more details on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/justin-roiland-animation-empire-implosion-rick-and-morty-1235319366\/\">the implosion of <em>Rick and Morty<\/em> co-creator Justin Roiland\u2019s animation empire<\/a> in the wake of his arrest on domestic abuse charges and multiple former co-workers detailing harassment by Roiland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intelligencer looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2023\/01\/why-does-it-feel-like-amazon-is-making-itself-worse.html\">the increasing \u201cjunkification\u201d of Amazon<\/a>, where legitimate products are getting harder to find as the company tries to muscle its way into more spaces. My outsider\u2019s take: this is what happens when a company needs unbridled growth to prop up a stock price (or a billionaire owner\u2019s wealth).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The right-wing propaganda site Revolver states that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R )\u2019s takeover of that state\u2019s schools, including the previously progressive New College of Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revolver.news\/2023\/02\/desantis-new-florida-college-is-the-blueprint-for-recapturing-woke-institutions-nationwide\/\">is the blueprint Republicans need to use to take down public education across the country<\/a>. (The article also says that African American studies is \u201ca joke of a subject,\u201d if you doubt my characterization of Revolver\u2019s leanings.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elon Musk fired a top Twitter engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.platformer.news\/p\/elon-musk-fires-a-top-twitter-engineer\">because engagement on the billionaire\u2019s tweets is low<\/a>. Totally stable genius there.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twitter glitched for me twice this week \u2013 once when we all got the \u201cexceeded the daily limit\u201d warning, and once when the app showed me misplaced white boxes where certain tweets should have appeared in my timeline. Former employees say this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90848175\/twitter-stuck-in-code-loop-nightmare\">due to a series of code freezes and Musk\u2019s frequent, mercurial demands for changes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20230125-colette-the-most-beloved-french-writer-of-all-time\">profiles the French author Colette<\/a>, calling her \u201cthe most beloved French writer of all time,\u201d although in the English-speaking world she\u2019s probably best known for writing the novel <em>Gigi<\/em> that became a hit musical and film.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Native American groups are <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kansas-city-chiefs-native-americans-protest-8ae3ec6cd25a6a0fd4d394ea23583079\">protesting the Kansas City NFL team\u2019s nickname, mascot, and their use of the embarrassing \u201ctomahawk chop.\u201d<\/a> Atlanta baseball fans, pay attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Montana bill would prevent schools from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/montana-bill-would-allow-students-to-misgender-classmates\/2023\/02\/08\/a0cceb68-a80b-11ed-b2a3-edb05ee0e313_story.html\">punishing students who intentionally misgender or deadname classmates<\/a>. Just say bullying is allowed and be done with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/02\/opinion\/education-prejudice.html\">disdain for the less educated<\/a> the \u201clast acceptable prejudice,\u201d as Michael Sandel writes in the <em>New York Times<\/em>? He also argues that it\u2019s a problem for the Democrats, and a perception they need to shed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Voice actors are being asked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/5d37za\/voice-actors-sign-away-rights-to-artificial-intelligence\">sign away rights to their own voices<\/a> so studios can create AI versions and save a few bucks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tony Dungy and James Brown (the NFL announcer) have withdrawn from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsports.com\/2023\/2\/9\/23582185\/tony-dungy-james-brown-andrew-wommack-gay-mens-advance-charis-bible-college-nbc-cbs-nfl\">their speaking slots at an event hosted by an anti-gay Pharisee preacher<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans are not serious about governing, except when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/02\/jim-jordan-gop-weaponization-of-the-federal-government\">using the government as a weapon against their enemies<\/a>, which is, you know, what fascist regimes do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Also in Florida, the state is going to pass legislation to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ron-desantis-politics-florida-f96b0bf82cf5d9deea8ff55ada47d8e0\">end Disney\u2019s extra-governmental Reedy Creek Improvement District<\/a> as retaliation for the company\u2019s opposition to the state\u2019s anti-LGBT \u201cdon\u2019t say gay\u201d law. See the previous bullet point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attempts to erase Black history from curricula, as Florida is doing, end up doing nothing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/made-by-history\/2023\/02\/07\/desantis-history-education\/\">except leaving students less literate in American history<\/a>, rather than getting them to \u201clove\u201d the U.S. more, writes education Prof. Adam Laats in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By the way, sometimes pressure works, even on zealots: Florida\u2019s interscholastic sports committee has dropped plans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/education\/article272271043.html\">to make questions about athletes\u2019 menstrual cycles mandatory<\/a>. It was a blatant attempt to out trans kids, of course, although they claimed otherwise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Missouri\u2019s Republican-led legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/feb\/09\/missouri-rejects-ban-children-carrying-guns-in-public\">rejected a measure to ban children from carrying guns in public<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Iowa Republicans introduced a bill that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/iowa-child-labor-laws\">expand child labor in the state<\/a>, including jobs previously deemed too dangerous for kids like those in mining, logging, and animal slaughterhouses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A professor at the University of Wyoming tweeted about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jenni_tabler\/status\/1621750874082279424\">a former student of hers who was trans and killed themselves<\/a>. Legislatures passing laws attacking trans people, especially trans kids, are destroying lives just to score political points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/17\/science\/science-breakthroughs-disruption.html\">seeing fewer big scientific breakthroughs<\/a>, with the pace dropping steadily for over three-quarters of a century. Part of it is that breakthroughs are harder to come by as the low-hanging fruit is long picked, and part is that nations don\u2019t invest in basic science research without promise of immediate financial returns the way they used to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 200 people have been quarantined and at least 8 have died in Equatorial Guinea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/cameroon-restricts-movement-along-equatorial-guinea-border-after-several-2023-02-10\/\">from an as-yet unidentified hemorrhagic fever<\/a> (a category that includes dengue and the Ebola and Marburg filoviruses).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Board game news: Allplay (formerly known as Board Game Tables) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/boardgametables\/chomp-sail-couture-and-mind-space\">a Kickstarter up for four new small box games<\/a>, with pledges starting at $19 for any one of the titles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rock Manor Games has a Kickstarter, already over 400% funded, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/mikegnade\/set-a-watch-forsaken-isles-doomed-run\">the new expansion to the game Set a Watch<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This blog post arguing that <a href=\"https:\/\/playerelimination.com\/2023\/02\/02\/dominion-killed-replayability\/\">Dominion killed replayability in board games<\/a> makes a great point \u2013 the need to constantly buy expansions to is a great business model for a very small number of games\/publishers but not sustainable for the industry as a whole.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My top 100 prospects and team reports have been running for the last 12 days, finishing up today with the AL West team reports\/top 20s.
