For those of you interested in my board game content, I\u2019m going to do some small giveaways of promos and small expansions via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mrkeithlaw\/\">my Instagram account<\/a> starting this week, so feel free to follow me there if you\u2019re interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve got a bunch of non-work writing to do this weekend before I get back to prospect calls on Monday, with a new issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">my free email newsletter<\/a> next up once this post is done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Longreads first: This is about two weeks old, but the <em>New York Times<\/em> had an extremely in-depth investigative report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/12\/16\/world\/europe\/russia-putin-war-failures-ukraine.html\">the toll of Putin\u2019s war on Ukraine<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This week in \u201canti-abortion laws are going to kill women,\u201d a woman in Louisiana was having a miscarriage and two ERs turned her away because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2022\/12\/29\/1143823727\/bleeding-and-in-pain-she-couldnt-get-2-louisiana-ers-to-answer-is-it-a-miscarria?utm_source=pocket_reader\">they were afraid of prosecution under the state\u2019s draconian anti-abortion law<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, an Arizona anti-abortion law has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/arizona-abortion-father-lawsuit-wrongful-death\">allowed a man to sue the clinic that gave his ex-wife an abortion<\/a>, claiming wrongful death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I know there was A Discourse around this article, but you should read the actual piece about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/what-is-a-nepotism-baby.html\">the so-called \u201cnepo babies\u201d<\/a> that ran in Vulture, as it\u2019s more nuanced and thoughtful than the title or cover might imply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also from the <em>New York Times<\/em>\u2019 investigative unit, this December 19<sup>th<\/sup> story started the flood of revelations about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/19\/nyregion\/george-santos-ny-republicans.html\">Representative-Elect George Santos\u2019s fictional resume<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Rolling Stone <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/stone-temple-pilots-talk-show-dave-coutts-1234584605\/\">talked to Dave Coutts<\/a>, the singer of the 1990s band Talk Show, which was Stone Temple Pilots without singer Scott Weiland, about his experience in that one-album band and his post-music career.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hoax about computerized voting machines that flipped votes from Trump to Biden comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-election-montgomery\/\">longtime fraudster named Dennis Montgomery<\/a>, who sold a bunch of his so-called evidence to Mike Lindell and also has a history of selling bogus information to the federal government.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Des Moines, Iowa, removed police \u201cschool resource officers\u201d from schools and tried restorative practices instead. <em>In These Times <\/em>looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/the-city-that-kicked-cops-out-of-schools-and-tried-restorative-practices-instead\">some of the results from the first year<\/a>, where arrests dropped by about 80% but police calls only increased from 9 to 13. Not really mentioned is that this system, in addition to improving outcomes and keeping more kids in school and out of prison, is how much less it costs taxpayers, too.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Slate<\/em>\u2019s Justin Peters wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/elon-musk-twitter-files-bari-weiss-matt-taibbi-shadowbanning.html\">the finale of the \u201cgreat Internet grievance wars\u201d and what the so-called Twitter files actually say<\/a>, even as some loud right-wing accounts on the site are still complaining about \u201cshadowbanning\u201d as we speak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aaron Rupar wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/aaronrupar.substack.com\/p\/aaron-rupar-twitter-suspension-elon-musk\">his experiences getting suspended from Twitter<\/a> by a petulant Elon Musk. This came as the billionaire claimed an Internet account was responsible for a stalker trying to find him, even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/18\/details-of-musk-stalking-incident\/\">police found no link<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two journalists for the <em>Bend Bulletin<\/em> were reporting on the impact of a severe cold snap on the city\u2019s homeless, and decided to get involved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bendbulletin.com\/opinion\/column-journalism-ethics-say-dont-get-involved-as-cold-snap-threatened-womans-safety-we-did\/article_7f14fd08-8303-11ed-bfad-234966f8cb19.html?utm_source=pocket_reader\">try to help one such woman<\/a> despite the dictum that journalists shouldn\u2019t become part of any story they cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texas hired a man to train school board members, even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/12\/20\/tea-school-board-training\/\">he\u2019d been convicted twice of defrauding federal agencies<\/a>. Of course, this training was supposed to be an alternative to so-called \u201cwoke\u201d agendas. Grifters have realized how easy it is to target these people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vox has a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/down-to-earth\/23511348\/cop15-montreal-biodiversity-experts-hope-environment\">seven reasons why the planet might not actually be doomed<\/a>, based on the proceedings at this month\u2019s COP15 summit in Montr\u00e9al.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This <em>New York Times<\/em> story on a South Korean tour group that was stranded in Buffalo by the snow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/25\/nyregion\/snow-storm-korean-tourists.html\">only to find themselves taken in by a local couple<\/a> who just happened to have a bunch of Korean ingredients in their kitchen, is both a rare bit of good news and a testament to the power of food to bring people together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The anti-vaxxers and other COVID denialists who\u2019ve sown distrust and ignorance around COVID vaccine have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2022\/12\/26\/vaccine-hesitancy-measles-chickenpox-polio-flu\/\">led to rises in chicken pox, measles, and other vaccine-preventable diseases<\/a> as the dupes fooled by their misinformation are now skipping other critical vaccines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Atlantic<\/em> points out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2022\/12\/covid-deaths-anti-vaccine-republican-voters\/672575\/\">Republicans\u2019 anti-vaccine policies have killed more Republicans than Democrats<\/a>, although the article doesn\u2019t try to pinpoint a death toll from this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, Florida\u2019s hyperpartisan Supreme Court has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wfsu.org\/state-news\/2022-12-22\/the-florida-supreme-court-impanels-a-grand-jury-to-investigate-covid-vaccines?utm_source=pocket_reader\">impaneled a grand jury to \u201cinvestigate\u201d COVID-19 vaccines<\/a>. I assume they\u2019ll find whatever Gov. DeSantis tells them to find.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DeSantis also reached out to Chaya Raichik, the hatemonger behind the anti-LGBTQ LibsOfTikTok account, after her identity became public, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/ron-desantis-libsoftiktok\/\">offering to hide her at his Governor\u2019s Mansion even though she is a California resident<\/a>.
