They also paid $1.1 million from the same program to pay Favre for services never performed. In a functioning democracy, there\u2019d be at least an investigation in the legislature into current Gov. Tate Reeves (R), but Mississippi is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/news\/ldf-files-amicus-brief-in-mississippi-redistricting-case\/\">gerrymandered<\/a> into oblivion and <a href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org\/politics\/elections\/who-counts\/more-than-15-of-black-mississippi-residents-permanently-barred-from-voting\/\">has disenfranchised 15% of Black residents<\/a>, giving Republicans a supermajority in both houses, so nothing will happen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ProPublica exposes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/therapeutic-schools-northwest-soil-invisible-washington\">the abuses at a private school in Washington state that took taxpayer money<\/a> while failing to protect or educate high-risk kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ProPublica normally does great work, but they ran a garbage story about the debunked lab-leak hypothesis for COVID-19\u2019s origins, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fallows.substack.com\/p\/on-that-propublica-chinese-lab-leak\">it was rife with obvious mistakes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There\u2019s a ridiculous anti-vax film circulating online, called <em>Died Suddenly<\/em>, which is so shoddy that it claims that people who are indisputably alive actually died from the COVID-19 vaccine. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/g5v9yj\/now-the-anti-vaccine-world-is-mad-at-died-suddenly-the-viral-anti-vax-documentary\">Other anti-vaxxers are attacking it<\/a>, saying it\u2019s hurting their (bogus) cause. If you want more information on the various lies of <em>Died Suddenly<\/em>, much of which focuses on false claims of blood clots, you can find <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedmedicine.org\/a-clot-too-far-an-embalmer-dissects-antivax-misinformation-about-blood-clots-in-died-suddenly\/?utm_source=pocket_reader\">a lengthy takedown here<\/a> on Science-Based Medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grant Wahl, an acclaimed and respected soccer writer who has been an outspoken critic of the World Cup and the human rights abuses taking place in Qatar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/12\/09\/1142054844\/grant-wahl-soccer-writer-dies-qatar-world-cup\">died last night at a World Cup game<\/a>. He was 48.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even as the Biden Administration tries to get major social media sites like Facebook to curb COVID misinformation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/22\/us\/politics\/covid-misinformation-gab.html\">it\u2019s thriving on fringe sites like Gab<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elon Musk has claimed protecting children is one of his top priorities as the owner of Twitter, but he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/twitter-child-sexual-abuse-material\/\">laid off a huge chunk of the site\u2019s child safety team<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/12\/06\/twitter-ads-elon-musk\/\">Ads appear on the pages of white nationalists<\/a> Musk has unbanned from Twitter. I really don\u2019t understand why any company would keep buying ads on the site right now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meanwhile, Musk\u2019s advisers appear to include a bunch of right-wing trolls, and the site has been <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/11\/29\/elon-musk-twitter-andy-ngo-antifascist\/\">banning a number of left-wing activists\u2019 accounts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DonorsTrust, a dark-money, right-wing PAC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/17\/how-democracy-gets-corroded-right-wing-group-gets-two-dark-money-donations-425?utm_source=pocket_reader\">took in $425 million in anonymous contributions<\/a> from just two donors in 2021. Not sure how this is compatible with democracy over the long term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A lobbyist for a Saudi alfalfa company that has been has been <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/11\/28\/maricopa-supervisors-saudi-lobbyist-thomas-galvin\/\">elected to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors<\/a>, where he would have influence over a dispute about water usage in the state. Thomas Galvin\u2019s employer grows alfalfa with scarce water in Arizona and ships it to Saudi Arabia to feed livestock there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Harriot <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1596756606066335744.html\">dismantled the defenses of Jerry Jones<\/a> after a photo emerged of the Cowboys\u2019 owner, who has never hired a Black coach, at the door of a school in 1957 where white students blocked Black kids from integrating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FIRE, which often defends conservatives on college campuses who feel their free speech rights have been abrogated, has an editorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/news\/why-floridas-betrayal-first-amendment-stop-woke-should-concern-everyone-including\">calling out Florida\u2019s \u201cStop WOKE Act\u201d as a violation of the First Amendment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A naturopath claiming to be a doctor has been <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-california-covid-san-francisco-immunizations-a2654cad5153d7ddf3edda3cff0b2674?utm_source=pocket_reader\">sentenced to three years in prison for selling fake vaccine cards<\/a>. An ND is not a real doctor and naturopathy is woo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Zealand took guardianship of a baby who needed a life-saving blood transfusion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/30\/new-zealand-parents-refuse-use-of-vaccinated-blood-in-life-saving-surgery-on-baby?utm_source=pocket_reader\">because the parents refused to allow it unless the blood were \u201cunvaccinated,\u201d<\/a> which isn\u2019t even a thing. This is what misinformation about vaccines gets us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A number of mainstream outlets have posted \u201cjust asking questions\u201d pieces about gender-affirming care, including the <em>New York Times<\/em>. This <em>Teen Vogue<\/em> piece gets at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/recent-anti-trans-articles-miss-the-point-of-gender-affirming-care\">what\u2019s wrong with them<\/a>. Science-Based Medicine has a longer read on <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedmedicine.org\/what-the-new-york-times-gets-wrong-about-puberty-blockers-for-transgender-youth\/?utm_source=pocket_reader\">everything that was wrong in that <em>Times<\/em> piece<\/a> that attacked puberty blockers. Meanwhile, the <em>Telegraph<\/em> ran <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeyKnock\/status\/1599500605109587968?s=20&amp;t=Mn8jepyp9IWVpha9rIvZ6w\">five <\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeyKnock\/status\/1599500605109587968?s=20&amp;t=Mn8jepyp9IWVpha9rIvZ6w\">anti-trans pieces on a single page<\/a> last week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hardly still news at this point, but it\u2019s worth reiterating that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/donald-trump-kanye-west-nick-fuentes-dinner_n_63811c48e4b09a86b1b3392e\">Trump hosted white supremacist Nick Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago<\/a>, and most Republicans couldn\u2019t even muster the courage to say this was bad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/169050\/masters-vance-weird-right-republicans\">Have American right-wing candidates gotten too weird<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Uihleins, owners of the packaging supplies company U-Line, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/inside-the-billionaire-backed-dick-uihlein-hub-for-election-denial-restoration-action\">have partnered with an election denial organization in Arizona<\/a> called Restoration Action, Inc. You should not buy anything from U-Line, ever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 20-year-old son of Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt (R), who claimed the entire territory of the state \u201cfor Jesus,\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/bodycam-video-shows-oklahoma-governor-son-admitting-drinking-gun-case-vehicle\">stopped by police while drinking, with gun case, in a vehicle<\/a>, although he wasn\u2019t driving. He pulled the \u201cmy dad\u2019s the governor\u201d card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why does the media continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/23466433\/sbf-ftx-zuckerberg-elon-musk-billionaires-lies\">take billionaires at their word<\/a>? Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Sam Bankman-Fried \u2026 they promise things that the media just accepts without question, and then don\u2019t deliver, or it turns out they were lying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speaking of which, the forces trying to get public funding for a new stadium for the Titans have made a lot of big promises of economic returns. Turns out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/tennessee\/estimates-of-non-nfl-events-such-as-concerts-at-proposed-tennessee-titans-stadium-likely-inflated\/article_1377de5c-70e9-11ed-95a9-8fbeb8260197.html?utm_source=pocket_reader\">they\u2019re probably exaggerating<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Back in high school, Frank LaRose, Ohio\u2019s Secretary of State (R), \u201cwilled\u201d a classmate \u201ca rope and a tree\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/rooster.substack.com\/p\/frank-larose-high-school-yearbook-lynching\">as part of a series of racist jokes<\/a> he and friends made in the class yearbook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Brevard County Sheriff seems to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/florida\/2022\/11\/28\/fla-sheriff-students-no-longer-fear-getting-a-cheeks-torn-off-need-new-discipline-policy\/?utm_source=pocket_reader\">be planning to impose corporal discipline in the county\u2019s schools<\/a>, with the help of the school board and new superintendent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HarperCollins, publisher of both of my books, issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/international\/international-book-news\/article\/91072-harpercollins-addresses-stalled-union-negotiations-union-responds.html\">a response to the ongoing strike by the HCP Guild<\/a>, which is asking for better pay, better diversity initiatives, and more security for union members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>National Geographic<\/em> has some of the details scientists have learned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/tonga-volcano-largest-eruption-pacific-ocean-tallest-plume\">the massive 2021 volcanic explosion on the Pacific island nation of Tonga<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Board game news: Mapping the World, a new game about cartography, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1749787755\/mapping-the-world-a-board-game-about-cartography\">only halfway to its goal with just two days to go on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Empire\u2019s End, a new citybuilder from John D.
