The <em>Guardian<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/oct\/27\/megalopolis-how-coastal-west-africa-will-shape-the-coming-century\">what this means for the region<\/a>, its people, and the planet as a whole.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clint Smith\u2019s story in the <em>Atlantic<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2022\/12\/holocaust-remembrance-lessons-america\/671893\/\">his visits to Holocaust memorial sites<\/a> and what they might tell us about how to grapple with our own shameful past is one of the best things you\u2019ll read this year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And this <em>New York Times Magazine<\/em> article on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/10\/magazine\/afghanistan-orphan-baby-l.html\" target=\"_blank\">the theft of an Afghan baby by a network of American evangelical Christians<\/a> should win a Pulitzer. The lawsuit is still ongoing, but we should not be in the practice of stealing babies from countries we invade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The United States lags badly behind other developed nations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/stillbirths-prevention-infant-mortality?fbclid=IwAR0ee6ZIbwwQPf2YTpeNqoV4VUW-BFsqz6QKdC9FNpIoF7Qa5E6JMaMhR2Q&amp;utm_source=pocket_reader\">researching and preventing stillbirths<\/a>. We still have 20,000 stillbirths every year in the U.S., and at least a quarter of them are (likely) preventable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A woman visiting Ohio had a miscarriage and began to hemorrhage. Because of Ohio\u2019s anti-abortion law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2022\/11\/15\/1135882310\/miscarriage-hemorrhage-abortion-law-ohio\">the emergency room sent her home to wait<\/a> because they couldn\u2019t \u201cprove there was no fetal development.\u201d This is how these religiously-motivated laws will kill women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I was obsessed with the computer game Age of Empires when it first came out in the late 1990s. <em>WIRED<\/em> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/age-of-empires-25-anniversary-console-launch-xbox\/\">an interview with the current CEO of Microsoft Gaming and the head of the studio that makes the Age games<\/a> as the game celebrates its 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary and two new civilizations were added to the most recent version, Age of Empires IV.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ProPublica has the inside story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/inside-anti-abortion-meeting-with-tennessee-republican-lawmakers\">how anti-abortion groups helped write Tennessee\u2019s extremely strict ban<\/a> on the medical procedure and are working to defend it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colombia faces a difficult challenge as its new President wants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20221116-how-colombia-plans-to-keep-its-oil-and-gas-in-the-ground\">to stop extracting fossil fuels and move to climate-friendly energy sources<\/a>, including the lack of a transition plan for affected workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This 12-minute BBC podcast looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/w3ct369y\">online harassment and threats against scientists investigating the SARS-CoV-2 virus<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The CARES Act led to the release of 11,000 inmates from federal prisons during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/09\/29\/prison-release-covid-pandemic-incarceration\/\">Only 17 reoffended<\/a>. The U.S. has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/profiles\/US.html\">the highest incarceration rate in the world<\/a> and we spend nearly $200 billion just to keep people in prison. Maybe we should rethink this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new research paper in <em>Nature<\/em> found evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-05506-2\">climate change is increasing the risk of bat pathogens spilling over into humans<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yoel Roth was the head of trust and safety at Twitter, and wrote an op ed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/18\/opinion\/twitter-yoel-roth-elon-musk.html\">explaining why he quit a few weeks after Elon Musk took over the site<\/a>. It\u2019s not good, but it also explains how the company\u2019s dependence on advertisers may prevent Musk from turning it into 8chan. Roth himself has some <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yoyoel\/status\/1581308800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bigoted tweets<\/a> from 10+ years ago.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eighteen unvaccinated Ohio children, all but one under the age of 5, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/children-hospitalized-measles-outbreak-ohio-daycares-columbus\/\">have contracted measles in an ongoing outbreak<\/a> across two day care facilities. Measles is one of the most contagious viruses we know, and it can cause death up to ten years after the infection from a progressive and incurable neurological condition called SSPE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More anti-vax loons are demanding \u201cvaccine-free\u201d blood and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/7k8qe4\/antivax-covid-blood-bank\">are trying to set up so-called \u201csafe\u201d blood banks<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, America\u2019s Frontline Doctors, a quack group that took in millions from prescribing useless COVID-19 treatments and offering online \u201cconsultations,\u201d is imploding now because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/covid-misinformation-group-americas-frontline-doctors-implodes-over-dr-simone-golds-extravagant-spending\">founder and January 6<sup>th<\/sup> insurrectionist Simone Gold may have been embezzling the group\u2019s funds for personal gain<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, it appears that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona-health\/2022\/11\/14\/dengue-fever-reported-maricopa-county-health-officials\/10700418002\/\">someone contracted dengue fever from a mosquito bite in Arizona<\/a>. Climate change makes this almost inevitable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tucker Carlson\u2019s attempt to play kingmaker this election season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/tucker-carlson-election-senate-jd-vance-blake-masters-1234629984\/\">ended mostly with embarrassing defeats<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s a weak substitute for the real thing, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/codifying-roe-wade-challenges\/\">Democrats should codify <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> right now<\/a>, and force SCOTUS \u2013 with five justices who are religious zealots or otherwise openly anti-abortion \u2013 to grapple with it, according to <em>The Nation\u2019s<\/em> Elie Mystal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mystal also wrote elsewhere about how Chief Justice John Roberts <a href=\"https:\/\/ballsandstrikes.org\/law-politics\/john-roberts-most-powerful-republican-politician\/\">delivered the House to his fellow Republicans by gutting voting rights laws<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tom Scocca writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/14\/opinion\/trump-republican-gop-midterms.html\">Trump\u2019s hold on the GOP is stronger than ever<\/a> despite the drubbing many of his preferred candidates took in the midterms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Virginia state education department has proposed major changes to social studies standards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/11\/12\/virginia-schools-history-standards-youngkin\/\">written by five new appointees of the state\u2019s Republican governor<\/a>. Educators oppose the changes, calling them jingoistic and derogatory towards non-whites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moms for Liberty, the astroturfing, pro-white\/anti-LGBT activist group that\u2019s been targeting school board elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/moms-liberty-berkeley-county-school-board-superintendent-rcna57528\">threw out a Black superintendent in South Carolina and banned critical race theory<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Connecticut school district is so wedded to its racist mascot (the Redmen) that they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctinsider.com\/news\/article\/Killingly-must-forfeit-94-000-in-state-funding-17592587.php\">forgoing $94,000 in state funding<\/a> just to keep it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is shipping more migrants to Philadelphia in another instance of human trafficking, but the government of the City of Brotherly Love has posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2022-11-15-how-you-can-help-people-seeking-asylum-arriving-in-philadelphia\/\">a list of resources for folks who want to help welcome these new residents<\/a>. Love &gt; hate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And Texas Republicans have filed a bill that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/politics\/article\/texas-transgender-law-17587124.php\">criminalize gender-affirming care for minors<\/a> \u2013 yes, putting parents in prison for getting medical care for their kids. Why is MLB putting the All-Star Game there?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Biden Administration is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/17\/politics\/saudi-crown-prince-immunity-state-department-jamal-khashoggi\/index.html\">giving Saudi Arabian \u201cPrime Minister\u201d Mohammed bin Salman immunity<\/a> from a lawsuit filed by the fianc\u00e9e of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, because oil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All the news about Republicans investimigrating Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop or something is overshadowing the real damage they\u2019re going to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2022\/11\/16\/republicans-take-house-anti-science-probes\/\">by going after science agencies<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Board game news: Pandasaurus Games owners Molly Wardlaw and Nathan McNair face accusations from former employees of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dicebreaker.com\/companies\/pandasaurus-games\/feature\/pandasaurus-games-workers-allege-toxic-workplace-crunch-burnout-payment-issues\">creating a toxic workplace environment<\/a> through \u201cnegligence, mismanagement, and manipulation.\u201d I have met Molly and Nathan, although I can\u2019t say I know either of them well, and I\u2019ve reviewed many Pandasaurus Games over the years.
