She also explores the complex reasons why this trend increased during the pandemic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A ProPublica\/Texas Tribune joint investigation shed more light on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/uvalde-911-calls-highlight-botched-police-response\">the botched police response in Uvalde<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Intercept ran a widely shared story about the Department of Homeland Security <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/10\/31\/social-media-disinformation-dhs\/\">collaborating with tech companies to suppress (dis)information<\/a>, but TechDirt writer Mike Masnick says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/2022\/11\/02\/bullshit-reporting-the-intercepts-story-about-government-policing-disinfo-is-absolute-garbage\/\">the story is \u201cabsolute garbage.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you seen the \u201cstop the insanity\u201d or \u201canti-white bigotry\u201d ads running during the MLB playoffs? Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/01\/us\/politics\/radio-ads-trump-allies.html\">are funded by dark-money groups founded and run by former Trump officials<\/a>, including Stephen Miller. They\u2019re bullshit, notably the first one\u2019s claims about crime being out of control \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/10\/27\/1131825858\/us-crime-data-midterm-elections\">crime is way down from the 1990s<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John Leguizamo wrote an open letter to Hollywood about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2022-11-01\/la-vanguardia-john-leguizamo-latino-representation-hollywood\">the continued lack of opportunities for Latinx actors<\/a> on screen, in spite of growing evidence that movies and shows built around such actors and characters do well financially. The same argument applies to Black or Asian actors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, one of the worst and most vocal anti-vaxxers online for at least a decade, is now, <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2022\/10\/31\/cleveland-doctor-who-said-covid-19-vax-makes-people-magnetic-under-state-investigation\/\">finally under investigation by the Ohio medical board<\/a> for her ridiculous testimony before that state\u2019s legislature where she claimed COVID-19 vaccines made people magnetic, among other falsehoods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So much content on Elon Musk\u2019s flailing takeover of Twitter, from how he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/musk-twitter-takeover-analysis\">backing down on promises and kowtowing to regulators<\/a> to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingdive.com\/news\/Elon-Musk-twitter-advertisers-pause\/635808\/\">massive drop in advertisers<\/a> to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/04\/technology\/elon-musk-twitter-layoffs.html\">badly botched mass layoff<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-04\/twitter-sued-for-mass-layoffs-by-musk-without-enough-notice\">a class-action lawsuit<\/a> because the layoff violated California law. And that\u2019s without getting into this silly Twitter Blue program, that misunderstands the part where verifying users benefits <em>Twitter<\/em>, not the other way around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Musk also shot himself in the foot by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/elon-musk-new-owner-twitter-tweets-unfounded-conspiracy-theory-paul-pe-rcna54717\">retweeting a false right-wing conspiracy theory about the attack on Paul Pelosi<\/a>, which Musk later deleted, but not before amplifying it to his huge follower base.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who campaigned on the bogus pretense that critical race theory was being taught in the state\u2019s elementary schools, set up a tip line for parents to rat out schools that were teaching stuff they didn\u2019t like. Parents instead used it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/education\/2022\/11\/03\/youngkins-critical-race-theory-tip-line-virginia-parents\/10655007002\/\">report actual violations of their rights<\/a>, such as the denial of special education requests, including services and evaluations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Countries in the Middle East are happily selling oil to the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-middle-east-is-going-green-while-supplying-oil-to-others\/\">while shifting to cleaner energy sources themselves<\/a>. They know you don\u2019t get high on your own supply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Oz had a paper rejected in 2003 over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/2022\/11\/01\/oz-senate-doctor-research\/\">questions about the strength of the data he used to reach his conclusions<\/a>, earning a two-year ban from publishing in that same journal \u2013 an unusually harsh punishment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/contentiongames\/slay-the-spire-the-board-game\">The Slay the Spire board game Kickstarter<\/a> has raised over $2 million already.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For subscribers to the Athletic, I ranked the top 50 free agents in this year\u2019s class, and held a Q&amp;A about it that afternoon.
