Sex education doesn\u2019t increase sexual activity, but it does decrease pregnancy and STI rates, while so called \u201cabstinence-only\u201d education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.columbia.edu\/public-health-now\/news\/abstinence-only-education-failure\">doesn\u2019t work at all<\/a>.<\/li><li>The famous political magazine \u2026 uh, <em>Science<\/em> published an editorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/almost-everything-tucker-carlson-said-about-anthony-fauci-week-was-misleading-or-false\">calling out Tucker Carlson for his misleading comments and outright falsehoods<\/a> about Anthony Fauci. What\u2019s next? <em>IEEE Spectrum<\/em> goes after Jordan Peterson?<\/li><li>Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is a member of a fringe religious group that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/aug\/26\/amy-coney-barrett-faith-group-people-of-praise\">preaches women\u2019s subservience to their husbands<\/a>.<\/li><li>This summer, Germany offered a 9 euro all-you-can-ride monthly train ticket. People used it, a lot, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/germany-9-euro-ticket-ending\/index.html\">air pollution went down<\/a>.<\/li><li>The Nepalese language <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20220804-kusunda-the-language-isolate-with-no-word-for-no\">Kusunda is down to just one native speaker<\/a>, leading to a rush to try to save this language isolate, meaning it has no known linguistic relatives, before it dies out. The BBC also had a post last month about what happens in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20220719-how-speaking-other-languages-changes-your-brain\">the brains of people speak multiple languages<\/a>.<\/li><li>The mother of a nonbinary child explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/08\/29\/new-york-gender-tolerance-arizona\/\">why they moved from Arizona to New York<\/a>, citing the former\u2019s hostility to anyone who isn\u2019t straight and cisgender.<\/li><li>The <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em>\u2019s Shakeia Taylor looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/breaking\/ct-minor-league-baseball-labor-issues-20220827-dazcccyspvg7xbjbfp45ueavai-story.html\">minor league players\u2019 fight to end MLB\u2019s antitrust exemption<\/a>. (A subscription might be required.)<\/li><li>Facebook and Instagram finally, years after the horse left the barn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/18\/technology\/facebook-instagram-robert-kennedy-jr-misinformation.html\">kicked RFK Jr\u2019s false information factory Children\u2019s Health Defense off their sites<\/a>, citing the group\u2019s history of spreading anti-vaccine lies. I have no idea why it took this long. Well, I can offer a gue$$.<\/li><li>Susan Demas, a longtime political journalist in Michigan, wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2022\/07\/16\/susan-j-demas-normalcy-bias-is-a-hell-of-a-drug\/\">how normalcy bias has led us to believe things aren\u2019t that bad<\/a> when, in face, they\u2019re terrible. It\u2019s a real cognitive bias that leads people to dismiss or diminish the odds of disasters, such as the global food crisis I mentioned above.<\/li><li>Board game news: A fellow Gen Con attendee wrote an editorial for the <em>Washington Post<\/em> because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/08\/21\/indiana-abortion-fight-hits-gen-con\/\">he\u2019s mad that the convention might move in response to Indiana\u2019s abortion ban<\/a>. It\u2019s the least self-aware thing you\u2019ll read all week. Abortion bans, same-sex marriage bans, \u201cbathroom bills,\u201d laws that target LGBTQ+ people \u2026 he doesn\u2019t have to worry about these, because he\u2019s a straight cis white guy.
