A couple of folks reached out to see if my absence from the internet was due to something unfortunate, and I appreciate that you checked in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I started this break, I had a slew of articles for subscribers to The Athletic, including a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3461142\/2022\/08\/01\/mlb-top-prospects-2022-minor-leaguers\/\" target=\"_blank\">ranking of the top 60 prospects in the minors<\/a> that included recent draftees; some thoughts on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3473082\/2022\/08\/03\/mlb-trade-deadline-winners-losers\/\" target=\"_blank\">which teams did best and worst at the trade deadline<\/a>; and breakdowns of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3471243\/2022\/08\/02\/soto-padres-lineup-nationals-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Juan Soto trade<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3468814\/2022\/08\/01\/trade-report-athletics-yankees-montas-trivino\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Frankie Montas trade<\/a>; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3467887\/2022\/08\/01\/trade-report-josh-hader-padres-brewers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Josh Hader trade<\/a>; and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3474752\/2022\/08\/03\/under-radar-trades-phillies-reds\/\" target=\"_blank\">some smaller deals<\/a> from that final day. I held <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/3466129\/2022\/08\/01\/keith-law-mlb-prospects-trade-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Q&amp;A<\/a> at the Athletic on August 1st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before this vacation, I took a few days to head to Indianapolis to go to Gen Con, the largest board game convention in North or South America, and wrote about it in two posts for Paste &#8211; one <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/gen-con-2022-best-board-games\/\" target=\"_blank\">ranking the ten best games I played there<\/a>, and another discussing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/gen-con-2022-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\">everything else I tried or saw<\/a>. I also reviewed the very disappointing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/stranger-things-board-game-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Stranger Things game<\/a>, Attack of the Mind Flayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My podcast will return this upcoming week, as will my newsletter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><li>Longreads first: The <em>New York Times<\/em> details the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/18\/technology\/dan-price-resign-social-media.html\" target=\"_blank\">numerous allegations against former Gravity Payments CEO Dan Price<\/a>, who had become a media darling for his decision to raise his company&#8217;s minimum salary to $70K a year (which, to be clear, is still good!) and his tweets about excessive CEO pay and living wages.<\/li><li>Bob Nutting, owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, bought the <em>Aspen Times<\/em> newspaper, and in what appears to be a concerted effort with a Russian oligarch, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/08\/aspen-times-newspaper-vladislav-doronin-billionaire-lawsuit\/671180\/\" target=\"_blank\">suppressed negative coverage in the 140-year-old paper<\/a>, according to a former editor.<\/li><li>Climate change is causing a mass movement of people from the worst-hit areas, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2022\/aug\/18\/century-climate-crisis-migration-why-we-need-plan-great-upheaval\" target=\"_blank\">we need to prepare for it<\/a>.<\/li><li>NBC News has the story of a Texas mom campaigning to ban LGBTQ+ themed  books from school libraries &#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/trib.al\/HzjmrTZ\" target=\"_blank\">even though her own son is gay<\/a>.<\/li><li>Texas&#8217; abortion law made <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2022\/07\/26\/1111280165\/because-of-texas-abortion-law-her-wanted-pregnancy-became-a-medical-nightmare\" target=\"_blank\">one woman&#8217;s wanted pregnancy a medical nightmare<\/a>. Republicans trying to ban abortion are worse at failing to anticipate consequences than Bud Selig was.<\/li><li>The BBC looks back at the failure of Disney and Miramax to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20220713-princess-mononoke-the-masterpiece-that-flummoxed-the-us\" target=\"_blank\">sell Hayao Miyazaki&#8217;s film <em>Princess Mononoke<\/em> to American audiences<\/a>.<\/li><li>Dr. Angela Rasmussen, one of the authors of the recent studies that showed that COVID-19 almost certainly had a natural origin, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/aug\/13\/angela-rasmussen-on-covid-19-this-origins-discussion-is-the-worst-thing-about-twitter\" target=\"_blank\">discussed the toxic &#8220;lab-leak&#8221; discource on social media<\/a>, one pushed by bad actors, including people with books to sell.<\/li><li>Dan Szymborski wrote about how <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fangraphs.com\/fernando-tatis-jr-suspension-is-huge-loss-for-padres-fans-major-league-baseball\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Fernando Tatis suspension is a loss for baseball<\/a>, not just for Padres fans.<\/li><li>Two billionaires, Jeff Yass and Dick Uihlein, are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kylemullins\/2022\/08\/04\/these-two-billionaires-are-helping-bankroll-an-election-denier-in-nevadas-senate-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">funding a far-right election denier in Nevada&#8217;s<\/a> Senate race. Uihlein&#8217;s money comes from U-Line, his closely held packaging company. If I get a package in an U-Line box, I ask the shipper or vendor to use someone else for their packaging needs.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2022\/07\/28\/1114183886\/a-doctor-in-nigeria-tried-to-warn-the-world-that-monkeypox-had-become-a-global-t?utm_term=nprnews&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=npr&amp;t=1660984170190\" target=\"_blank\">A Nigerian doctor tried to warn the world about monkeypox back in 2016<\/a>, but nobody listened.<\/li><li>President Biden has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ryanlcooper\/status\/1559257494341488644?s=12&amp;t=gOJ0tlAtYXAcfM-EIwrWbg\" target=\"_blank\">almost completely stopped drone attacks in Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, and Syria<\/a>, compared not just to his immediate predecessor but to President Obama as well.<\/li><li>This was inevitable: some sore-loser parents <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2022\/8\/17\/23310668\/school-investigates-female-athlete-transgender-complaint\" target=\"_blank\">used Utah&#8217;s anti-trans law to question the gender of the girl<\/a> who beat their daughters in a track event.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/boston-childrens-hospital-warns-employees-far-right-online-harassment-rcna43376\" target=\"_blank\">far-right transphobes are harassing Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital employees<\/a> over false claims that the hospital is conducting gender-affirming surgeries on trans kids.<\/li><li>Reader Dr. Paul Sax wrote a personal piece about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2795264\" target=\"_blank\">why abortions are medical care<\/a>.<\/li><li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> wrote about how <em>Indy Star<\/em> reporters showed that the story of a pregnant 10-year-old who had to travel out of Ohio to Indiana for an abortion was, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/media\/2022\/07\/28\/ohio-abortion-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in fact, not a hoax<\/a>. (And then Indiana banned all abortions, because that state is also a theocracy.)<\/li><li>Board game news: The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/bitewinggamesnick\/trailblazers\" target=\"_blank\">Kickstarter for Trailblazers<\/a>, a short, portable family game about hiking and kayaking, funded in less than two hours.<\/li><li>Level Up Dice made custom polyhedral dice from metal melted down from a German WWII tank, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/levelupdice\/status\/1560338547374059520?s=12&amp;t=ANDldAVP2JE7LTJV2iaAjg\" target=\"_blank\">then had to apologize for it<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m returning from a long vacation to England and Wales, one in which I was barely online and enjoyed this tremendously.
