This is what the death of local news gives us: planted news stories, just credible enough to fool people who&#8217;ll gladly spread them around, and once they&#8217;re out of the can you&#8217;re never getting them back in.<\/li><li>My friend Zabe Bent wrote a piece for the <em>Los Angeles Review of Books <\/em>imploring Americans, especially those of us who are white, <a href=\"https:\/\/lareviewofbooks.org\/article\/soon-one-day-still\/\">to fight more to change the pattern of police murders of unarmed Black people<\/a>.<\/li><li>Emily Oster was named to the <em>TIME <\/em>100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world, but <a href=\"https:\/\/proteanmag.com\/2022\/03\/22\/motivated-reasoning-emily-osters-covid-narratives-and-the-attack-on-public-education\/\">her writing to the COVID-19 pandemic has not been evidence-based<\/a> \u2013 and has earned her financial support from Charles Koch and Peter Thiel.<\/li><li>Two great retrospectives on <em>The Wire<\/em> on the twentieth anniversary of its premiere, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv\/tv-features\/the-wire-20-anniversary-1361361\/\">Alan Sepinwall at <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> and from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/02\/arts\/television\/the-wire-20th-anniversary.html\">James Poniewozik at <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/li><li>Also in <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-features\/cary-fukunaga-no-time-to-die-1359656\/\">director Cary Fukunaga used his power to pursue and harass young women<\/a> on his film sets.<\/li><li>Tim Grierson wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/melmagazine.com\/en-us\/story\/al-pacino-godfather\">Al Pacino\u2019s breakout performance in <em>The Godfather<\/em><\/a> for the fiftieth anniversary of that film\u2019s premiere. It\u2019s quite something to see an understated Pacino before his woo-ah! days.<\/li><li>BBC Food profiles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/article\/20220601-meza-malonga-the-afro-fusion-food-making-waves\">the Kigali, Rwanda restaurant Meza Malonga<\/a>, whose chef-owner Dieuveil Malonga owns two farms and traveled to 48 African countries to learn about the continent\u2019s many regional cuisines.<\/li><li>Vladimir Putin is increasingly <a href=\"propublica.org\/article\/wagner-group-russia-putin-private-army\">relying on private mercenaries from The Wagner Group<\/a>, and the U.S. has had little luck in stopping the company\u2019s spread even after reports of human rights violations in Syria, Ukraine, and the Central African Republic.<\/li><li>The <em>New Yorker<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/letter-from-the-southwest\/the-staff-of-uvaldes-local-paper-cover-the-worst-day-of-their-lives\">how Uvalde\u2019s local newspaper covered the massacre at their elementary school<\/a>, where the victims included the daughter of the paper\u2019s receptionist.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, the town\u2019s police chief, who was sworn in as a city council member in a secret (and probably unconstitutional) ceremony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/01\/1102393824\/uvalde-investigation-arredondo-cooperate\">is refusing to talk to investigators<\/a> about the cops\u2019 failure to stop the killer.<\/li><li>If you\u2019re unsure about the need for reforming our gun laws, I <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidhogg111\/status\/1532059535829258241\">strongly recommend you watch this two-minute video<\/a>.<\/li><li>Russia has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61441192\">set up disinformation outlets in Ukraine<\/a> to push its propaganda, including false claims of Nazi supporters and Ukrainian atrocities.<\/li><li>The executive producer of the revival of <em>Queer as Folk<\/em> wrote for <em>Variety <\/em>about <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/republicans-trans-panic-jaclyn-moore-1235281247\/\">Republicans\u2019 use of trans panic and the need for greater queer representation in media<\/a>.<\/li><li>A peer-reviewed journal chose to publish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/peer-reviewed-journal-publishes-covid-19-denier-editorial-filled-with-lies\/\">a falsehood-filled editorial written by a COVID-19 denialist<\/a>. Skeptical Raptor debunks the piece, but we don\u2019t know why the journal\u2019s editors would let such nonsense pass.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jayobtv\/status\/1532717916331950080\">Florida threatened to fine the Special Olympics <em>over $27 million<\/em><\/a>for imposing a vaccine requirement on its events this weekend. The organizers backed down.<\/li><li>Ohio Republicans passed a bill that calls for <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2022\/06\/03\/gop-passes-bill-aiming-to-root-out-suspected-transgender-female-athletes-with-genital-inspection\/\">genital examinations of \u201csuspected\u201d trans athletes<\/a>. Mad your kid lost in the hurdles? Embarrass the winner by demanding the officials check their gonads!<\/li><li>The <em>Atlantic<\/em>\u2019s Katherine Wu writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2022\/05\/covid-reinfection-research-immunity\/639436\/\">we are all likely to get COVID-19 repeatedly<\/a> now that the virus has become endemic and we\u2019ve pretty much all given up on mitigation methods.<\/li><li>Reynolds American, the giant tobacco company owned by British American Tobacco, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tobacco-politics-reynolds-american-money-contributions-campaign-2022-5\">donated nearly $6 million<\/a> to political candidates, PACs, and ballot initiative committees during 2021, 80% of it to Republicans or conservatives.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2022\/06\/03\/police-respond-lisbon-home-john-roemer-ex-juneau-county-judge\/7505230001\/\">A right-wing militia member shot and killed a retired judge<\/a> in Wisconsin and had a hit list that included the names of other politicians, including Governor Tony Evers (D).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-reidout\/reidout-blog\/christian-nationalism-republicans-rcna31221\">Christian nationalism is on the rise<\/a>, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R) making it explicit in comments this week (if you oppose Christian nationalism, in her words, you\u2019re a \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d), and the media has been very late to cover and call out these seditionists, even though the movement has been building for decades.<\/li><li>The Council for Economic Accountability is <a href=\"https:\/\/economicaccountability.org\/\">trying to mobilize to fight public funding<\/a> for a new stadium for the Washington Commanders.<\/li><li>The BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-61569648\">profiled Jessica Cisneros<\/a>, who may be about to lose her primary challenge to Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX). Cisneros should be part of the future of the party \u2013 she\u2019s a woman of color, pro-union, pro-choice, pro-immigrant \u2013 but the Democratic powers that be chose to back Cuellar, who opposes abortion rights, labor rights, and immigration reform.<\/li><li>Board game news: BGG\u2019s Designer Diaries series has an entry from Tom Lehmann, designer of Res Arcana, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/blogpost\/132262\/designer-preview-dice-realms\">on his latest game, Dice Realms<\/a>, which just came out last month from Rio Grande.
