My two books, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062490230\"><em>Smart Baseball<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942739\"><em>The Inside Game<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> are both available in paperback, and you can buy them at your local independent book store or at Bookshop.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The federal government has spent over $2 billion on what should have been an effort to save wild salmon in the Pacific Northwest, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2022\/05\/24\/pacific-northwest-federal-salmon-hatcheries-declining-returns\/\">instead the money mostly went to prop up failing hatcheries<\/a>, while the wild salmon population keeps dropping.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The hunt for nonexistent election fraud in Wisconsin has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/election-fraud-wisconsin-zuckerbucks-jay-stone\">powered by a hypnotherapist and failed politician<\/a> running what appears to be a grift, whether or not he actually believes in the Bie Lie.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>People who fight new development in their areas (often referred to as NIMBYs,&#8221; for &#8220;Not In My Backyard,&#8221;) under the guise of opposing overpopulation or fighting climate change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/05\/population-growth-housing-climate-change\/629952\/\">are motivated by racism, xenophobia, or just outright misanthropy<\/a>. We&#8217;re threatened less with overpopulation than with an aging global population, declining fertility, and too many people spread over too much space.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If we can&#8217;t listen to &#8216;imperfect&#8217; victims like Amber Heard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/may\/22\/metoo-is-over-if-we-dont-listen-to-imperfect-victims-like-amber-heard\">it will be the death of the #MeToo movement<\/a>, writes Martha Gill in the <em>Guardian<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Speaking of which, here&#8217;s a twitter thread on <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1528144498496311298.html\">men who were supposedly &#8220;canceled&#8221;<\/a> for sexual harassments or assaults, and how successful they&#8217;ve been since. I don&#8217;t think every tweet here is accurate, as some of these men clearly have been worse off, but the gist is accurate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>San Francisco Pride Parade organizers asked police, who typically march in the event, to do so in plainclothes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/San-Francisco-pride-police-17188144.php\">So the cops withdrew from the event<\/a>, and now the Mayor has, too.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gabe Kapler wrote on his personal site about his decision <a href=\"https:\/\/kaplifestyle.com\/2022\/05\/27\/home-of-the-brave\/\">to stop coming out on the field for the national anthem<\/a>, calling the performative exercise &#8220;participating in a self congratulatory glorification of the ONLY country where these mass shootings take place.&#8221; I haven&#8217;t stood for the anthem in several years now, in accordance with my own conscience. That&#8217;s all the anthem is \u2013 performative patriotism.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You want one specific reason why? How about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/news\/education\/2022\/05\/25\/stitt-signs-oklahoma-bathroom-bill-restricting-transgender-school-access-birth-sex\/9900609002\/\">Oklahoma rushing to ban trans students from using the proper bathrooms<\/a>, a law designed to hurt some of the most vulnerable people in our society while solving a problem that doesn&#8217;t exist.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Republicans&#8217; favorite answer to calls for gun control \u2013 that a &#8220;good guy with a gun&#8221; would prevent these massacres \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2022\/05\/gop-school-uvalde-shooting-response-guys-with-guns.html\">was thoroughly eviscerated this week in Uvalde<\/a>, as the so-called good guys, with guns and badges, did nothing. Except, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2022\/05\/what-did-police-actually-do-in-the-uvalde-shooting.html\">pinning parents to the ground<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Here&#8217;s a list of all the laws Texas passed last year that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2021\/08\/30\/407291\/here-are-the-new-texas-gun-laws-going-into-effect-on-sept-1\/\">made it easier for the Uvalde shooter to get an assault rifle the minute he turned 18<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The real reason we don&#8217;t have gun control in the U.S.? It&#8217;s the tyranny of the minority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2022\/05\/senate-state-bias-filibuster-blocking-gun-control-legislation\/638425\/\">provided by the structure of the U.S. Senate<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Republicans love to talk about &#8220;pedophiles&#8221; and &#8220;groomers&#8221; when referring to LGBTQ+ people, or just anyone they don&#8217;t like, which is some serious projection considering <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2022\/04\/from-hastert-to-gaetz-lets-talk-about-republicans-and-sex-crimes.html\">how many prominent Republican politicians have been accused or convicted of sex crimes<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Or how about the Oregon Republican Congressional candidate who is anti-abortion, but <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindependent.com\/oregon-republican-house-nominee-primary-mike-erickson-abortion-6th-congressional-district\/\">who paid for his girlfriend to have an abortion<\/a> (according to her)?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/may\/21\/trump-shares-cpac-hungary-platform-racist-antisemite\">the party&#8217;s hero appeared at CPAC<\/a> along with a Hungarian talkshow host who has called Jews &#8220;stinking excrement&#8221; and the same clown who pushed the bogus Pizzagate conspiracy theory several years ago.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Scientific American<\/em> weighs in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/what-we-know-about-the-rise-in-monkeypox-cases-worldwide\/\">on the rise in monkeypox cases around the world<\/a> with some facts and lukewarm takes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Big Oil has already given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/reports-investigations\/crew-investigations\/big-oil-has-given-1-million-to-fuel-seditionists\/\">a million dollars to fuel Republican candidates<\/a> who back(ed) the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> insurrection efforts.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Certain hotels are considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/hotels-using-nfts-to-create-a-stubhub-for-lodging-reservations-11653393601\">using NFTs to create a secondary market for reservations<\/a> \u2013 which would mean you&#8217;re buying your reservation, and would have no way to cancel it. You&#8217;d have to sell it to the next sucker.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Paste<\/em>&#8216;s Clare Martin writes about John Mulaney&#8217;s decision to bring Dave Chappelle on stage, unannounced, at his comedy show, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/comedy\/john-mulaney\/john-mulaney-dave-chappelle\/\">the myth of the &#8220;good ones.&#8221;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dr. Paul Sax wrote a post in praise of ophthalmologist Dr. Will Flanary, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.jwatch.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/in-praise-of-dr-glaucomflecken\/2022\/05\/23\/\">whom you may know as Dr. Glaucomflecken<\/a>, the very popular TikTok account where he skewers America&#8217;s dysfunctional health care system, the journal review process, and orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Flanary was the commencement speaker at the graduation ceremony for the Yale School of Medicine this past week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Consequence of Sound offered one tribute (among many) to the <a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2022\/05\/depeche-mode-andy-fletcher-dead\/\">late Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode<\/a>, who died at age 60 this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A new research paper argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/lifes-first-peptides-may-have-grown-on-rna-20220524\/\">early RNA molecules may have allowed peptides to grow on them<\/a>, which then helped the RNA molecules become more complex, which would be a key finding in explaining the origins of life.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Board game news: Arcs, the latest game from Leder Games (Root, Fort, Oath), is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/2074786394\/arcs\">now on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I missed this Kickstarter, but Fliptown looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/writestuffgames\/fliptown\">a pretty solid roll-and-write<\/a>, due out next March.
