The article doesn&#8217;t even mention the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining, which would seem especially important to a city like Miami.<\/li><li>Texas&#8217;s General Land Officer, led by Commissioner George P. Bush, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/16\/texas-harvey-disaster-aid-land-office\/\">diverted federal hurricane relief funds away from coastal communities to inland ones<\/a> that are whiter and more likely to vote Republican.<\/li><li>The <em>New York Times<\/em> ran a story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/02\/health\/john-fryer-psychiatry.html\">commemorating the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Dr. John Fryer&#8217;s speech<\/a> to the American Psychiatric Association, where he revealed he was gay, doing so while wearing a disguise and without revealing his real name. The speech led to the removal of homosexuality from the APA&#8217;s Diagnostic &amp; Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The excellent documentary <em>Cured<\/em> covers this story at greater length.<\/li><li>Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ed Yong points out that modest hospitalization numbers don&#8217;t tell the whole story about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2022\/05\/hospitalization-covid-healthcare-burnout\/629892\/\">how much stress COVID-19 has put on our health care system<\/a>.<\/li><li>Why are there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20220510-why-are-there-continent-sized-blobs-in-the-deep-earth\">gigantic blobs of molten rock and water<\/a> in the Earth&#8217;s lower mantle?<\/li><li>The <em>St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/em> has the inside story on how the Rams&#8217; ownership worked the NFL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/local\/under-cover-of-darkness-the-inside-story-of-how-the-rams-worked-the-nfl-and\/article_0df390b8-40d5-5ead-b78b-779cb5187f9e.html\">to secure the team&#8217;s move back to Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/li><li>Pennsylvania Republicans who helped pass a mail-in voting law are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/05\/16\/1096943765\/some-pennsylvania-lawmakers-who-helped-pass-mail-in-voting-law-now-want-it-throw\">now trying to get it thrown out<\/a>.<\/li><li>The deaths of two Ohio State students due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/07\/us\/adderall-fentanyl-osu-deaths.html\">fake Adderall<\/a> that contained fentanyl gave rise, once again, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chrisroberts\/2021\/07\/31\/fentanyl-tainted-marijuana-is-still-mostly-a-myth\/\">the myth that there&#8217;s fentanyl-laced cannabis in the wild<\/a>.<\/li><li>Police in Highland Park, Michigan, seized a privately-owned building on dubious grounds, and then demanded that the owners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/news\/local-news\/investigations\/highland-park-returns-seized-building-after-asking-for-2-new-police-cars-in-exchange\">buy the department two new police cars<\/a> for its return. The department did give the building back to its owners without the ransom, but what are the consequences for the officials involved in this extortion?<\/li><li>Now right-wing politicians and media figures are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/republican-attacks-comedy-mirror-their-attacks-democracy-n1295395\">targeting comedians who mock them<\/a>, sending a torrent of threats and abuse their way.<\/li><li>A Twitter exec posted some thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1526237578843672576.html\">how much spam there actually is on the site<\/a>, and what the company is doing to combat it.<\/li><li>The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine held its annual convention in New Orleans, and they posted (and deleted) a tweet from there showing members <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/friendlycovid19\/status\/152640063720159232\">unmasked at an indoor concert<\/a>.<\/li><li>A couple of right-wing nutjobs who also happen to hold office in the Virginia Beach area are suing Barnes and Noble <a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/barnes-noble-being-sued-in-virginia-beach-over-gender-queer-court-of-mist-and-fury\/\">to get specific LGBTQ+ books removed<\/a>. I&#8217;m sure the party of laissez-faire capitalism will put a stop to its own people doing this any minute now!<\/li><li>These ridiculous laws in the American South that prohibit teachers from discussing racism are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/buffalo-shooting-teachers-racism-laws-rcna29500\">making it very difficult for them to discuss the white nationalist<\/a> who shot up a grocery store in a majority-Black Buffalo neighborhood.<\/li><li>The assaults on voting rights and abortion rights are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/buffalo-shooting-teachers-racism-laws-rcna29500\">inextricably linked<\/a>, writes Brandon Tensley at CNN. It&#8217;s clear that the theocratic minority is more than happy to subvert the will of the majority if it suits their superstitious purposes.<\/li><li>The highly polarized public debate over abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/05\/13\/abortion-roe-polarization-high-conflict\/\">does not accurately reflect the nuanced views of the public<\/a>, writes Christine Emba at the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/li><li>Board game news: I didn&#8217;t know that a new version of Can&#8217;t Stop!, Sid Sackson&#8217;s addictive push-your-luck game, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eaglegames.net\/Can-t-Stop-2021-p\/102349.htm\">come out from Eagle-Gryphon<\/a>.<\/li><li>I backed the campaign for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/projects\/saltandpepper\/resist\">a new solitaire game called Resist!<\/a>, based on the rebels who fought the fascist regime in Spain after the Spanish Civil War.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For subscribers to The Athletic, I posted my first mock draft for 2022, and took reader questions in a Q&amp;A on the site that afternoon.
