She is suing the school, which has not responded publicly to this article.<\/li><li>Texas Governor Greg Abbott loves to brag about his so-called &#8220;border initiative,&#8221; but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/03\/21\/operation-lone-star-lacks-clear-metrics-measure-accomplishments\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">the evidence doesn&#8217;t support his claims<\/a>.<\/li><li><em>The Guardian<\/em> has a look <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/mar\/22\/the-casino-beckons-my-journey-inside-the-cryptosphere\">inside online cryptocurrency communities<\/a> (although I suppose an offline one would be a bit weird), examining the sorts of people involved in that world, many of whom don&#8217;t fit the stereotypes.<\/li><li>Leonard Leo is stepping down as head of the arch-right, Uihlein-funded opinion site The Federalist to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/leonard-leo-crc-advisors-federalist-society-50d4d844-19a3-4eab-af2b-7b74f1617d1c.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">found a new conservative advocacy group<\/a>, probably funded by more dark money. Leo had disproportionate influence in the conservative takeover of the federal judiciary.<\/li><li>The &#8220;CHEST&#8221; protocol supposedly used large doses of vitamin C to fight sepsis. It appears that the protocol&#8217;s creator, Dr. Paul Marik, <a href=\"https:\/\/kylesheldrick.blogspot.com\/2022\/03\/evidence-of-fabricated-data-in-vitamin.html?m=1\">fabricated his results<\/a>.<\/li><li>The editorial board of <em>Nature<\/em> argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-00788-y?\">this is a terrible time to stop tracking COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li><li>Bitcoin is a disaster for our environment. <a href=\"https:\/\/revealnews.org\/podcast\/can-our-climate-survive-bitcoin\/\">Can we stop it<\/a>?<\/li><li>With scientists under attack for nothing more than doing their jobs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/01\/27\/opinion\/who-will-defend-embattled-scientists\/\">who will step in to defend and protect them<\/a>?<\/li><li>It&#8217;s no longer the main story from the awards, but Justin Chang pointed out that the improvement in the quality of Oscar nominees has come with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2022-03-21\/oscars-2022-changes-controversy-popularity\">the telecast&#8217;s increasing disdain for those same movies<\/a>.<\/li><li><em>Don&#8217;t Look Up <\/em>was terrible, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nplusonemag.com\/online-only\/online-only\/long-days-journey-into-slight\/\">director\/co-writer Adam McKay really doesn&#8217;t get why<\/a>.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, the <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em> published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/brutally-honest-oscar-ballot-dont-look-up-coda-1235116095\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">commentary from an Oscar voter<\/a> who remained anonymous but was willing to show himself as a racist, retrograde asshole. I&#8217;m not sure why the Academy wouldn&#8217;t sift through the ballots to identify the voter and ban him from voting.<\/li><li>The Governor of Utah vetoed the state&#8217;s bill against trans athletes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spencerjcox\/status\/1506377724314611712\">his letter explaining why is worth reading<\/a>. The transphobic theocrats in the state legislature overrode his veto, though. This was all over one athlete, by the way.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>South Dakota Republicans declined to impeach their attorney general even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/south-dakota-reps-recommend-jason-ravnsborg-attorney-general-who-killed-joe-boever-not-be-impeached\">he killed a man in a hit-and-run accident<\/a>. He&#8217;s going to get off with zero consequences for the homicide.<\/li><li>The University of Texas-Austin denied tenure to a pregnant professor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2022\/03\/16\/ut-austin-must-pay-professor-3m-sex-discrimination-case\">now has to pay her $3 million<\/a> after losing a lawsuit. That&#8217;s good, but will it discourage them or any other university from doing it again?<\/li><li>A Tennessee nurse made a medication error that killed a patient, admitted it immediately, and was still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2022\/03\/25\/radonda-vaught-speaks-out-jury-verdict-homicide-trial\/7167520001\/\">found guilty of homicide by a jury<\/a>. I&#8217;m not sure how this helps medical safety. I do think it might deter people from becoming nurses in Tennessee.<\/li><li>There&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-60427016?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">a new wave of specialty coffee shops in India<\/a>, a country that would traditionally export its best coffee to developed countries.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60814913?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">Children are bearing the brunt<\/a> of Russia&#8217;s brutal war on Ukraine.<\/li><li>A Wilmington, Delaware, teacher who mentored dozens of kids and became a popular advocate for students from the city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/warner-elementary-principal-terrance-newton-dies-motorcycle-crash-delaware\/7120229001\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">died in a motorcycle accident<\/a> last month.<\/li><li>NEON announced that its film <em>Memoria <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/bwwtv\/article\/NEON-Announces-New-Film-MEMORIAs-Never-Ending-National-Tour-20220310?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">will go on permanent tour in cinemas<\/a> around the country, which is incredibly ableist \u2013 many people can&#8217;t go to movie theaters for COVID-19 or other reasons.<\/li><li>Board game news: The legacy game Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isle Nublar has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/prosperohall\/jurrassic-world-the-legacy-of-isla-nublar\">one more week on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/li><li>Nightmare Cathedral, what appears to a midweight area control and worker-placement game from the publishers of Teotihuacan and Tekhenu, is <a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/projects\/board-and-dice\/nightmare-cathedral\">on Gamefound for another 11 days<\/a>.<\/li><li>Stefan Fatsis has a fun story about <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2022\/03\/competitive-scrabble-playing-words.html\">a ridiculous coincidence in competitive Scrabble<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had three posts for subscribers to the Athletic in the last ten days, two scouting notebooks from the Cactus League (here&#8217;s one, here&#8217;s the other), and my annual breakout candidates post.
