I also sent a new issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">my free email newsletter<\/a>, talking about Monty Python and the development of my sense of humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: The <em>New York Times<\/em> asks what it means that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/03\/t-magazine\/meat-beef-vegetarianism-veganism.html\">even Americans are consuming less beef<\/a>.<\/li><li><em>Vanity Fair<\/em> has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2022\/03\/grimes-cover-story-on-music-and-mars\">fascinating article on Grimes<\/a>, talking about her persona, her upcoming concept album, and that guy.<\/li><li>Kathryn Schulz, who appeared on my podcast a few weeks ago, wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2022\/01\/24\/bambi-is-even-bleaker-than-you-thought\">the complicated history of <em>Bambi<\/em>, the book<\/a>, as it enters the public domain.<\/li><li>ProPublica reports on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/shackles-and-solitary-inside-louisianas-harshest-juvenile-lockup\">barbaric conditions in Louisiana&#8217;s largest juvenile detention facility<\/a> in Louisiana, part of the race in the Deep South to see which state can get to the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century fastest.<\/li><li>Conservative billionaires pushing fake news are becoming a major US export, as now a single South Korean oligarch is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/korean-war-annie-chan\/\">pushing conspiracy theories to keep the two Koreas at war<\/a>.<\/li><li>Vulture has a wonderful interview with <em>Murderville<\/em> showrunner Krister Johnson on the &#8220;treasure chest&#8221; of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/homestar-runner-krister-johnson-interview.html\">in-jokes, Easter eggs, and other small gags on Homestar Runner<\/a>.<\/li><li>Melissa Rodriguez, the former executive chef at Del Posto, is now opening three new restaurants in that space, including a high-end pizzeria. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.resy.com\/2022\/02\/melissa-rodriguez-is-ready-to-reboot-fine-dining-in-new-york-but-first-pizza\/\">Resy interviewed her about the venture<\/a>, the pandemic, and the end of Del Posto (which was good, but wildly overpriced).<\/li><li>Several research papers still in the pre-print stage have put more nails in the coffin of the lab-leak hypothesis have appeared in the last two weeks. The <em>New Republic<\/em> looks at how we can learn from this to try <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/165667\/covid-started-heres-stop-next-one\">to prevent the next zoonotic pandemic<\/a>.<\/li><li>The best path forward now is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/03\/covid-vaccinated-boosted-individual-institutional-responsibility\/626560\/\">for institutions to work to improve mitigation efforts<\/a>, including encouraging further vaccinations.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/money\/business\/truist-park-braves-economic-impact-cobb-county-study\/85-331e8f2f-911b-474e-b60d-3527d45dedf7\">Cobb County is taking a big loss<\/a> on its public funding of Truist Park. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/atlanta\/2022\/03\/10\/cobb-taxpayers-braves-stadium\">This Axios piece<\/a> has a quick summary of the same.<\/li><li>Stop acting like pediatric deaths from COVID-19 don&#8217;t matter because of their numbers. <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedmedicine.org\/they-have-names\/\">Those children had names<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/03\/08\/school-mask-cdc-covid-transmission\/\">Mask requirements in schools reduced COVID-19 cases<\/a>. We&#8217;re going to see increases in cases again now that schools everywhere are lifting mask mandates.<\/li><li>I don&#8217;t understand how <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/k_g_andersen\/status\/1498023912789004291\">asking people to harass a journal editor to try to short-circuit the peer review process<\/a> is remotely ethical, but Alina Chan, who wrote a book that pushes the lab-leak hypothesis, is long gone around the bend at this point.<\/li><li>The <em>Philadelphia Inquirer <\/em>had a long article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly-tips\/wilmington-delaware-things-to-do.html\">where to eat and what to do in Wilmington<\/a>, hitting our big 3 fine-dining restaurants (Le Cavalier, La Fia, and Bardea), and several other favorite spots of ours (Swigg, Wilma&#8217;s, De.co Food Hall, The Queen), although they whiffed badly with some of their inclusions (Mrs. Robino&#8217;s, Wilmington Country Store).<\/li><li>ABC News ran a long segment (about 12 minutes) on <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/video\/truth-ivermectin-83239643\">the lack of any evidence to support the use of ivermectin<\/a> against COVID-19.<\/li><li>Now bot accounts are using false fact-checks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/in-the-ukraine-conflict-fake-fact-checks-are-being-used-to-spread-disinformation?\">to spread fake news about the Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/li><li>Tennessee Governor Bill Lee <a href=\"http:\/\/tnholler.com\/2021\/11\/gov-lees-board-of-ed-appointee-linked-to-ammo-sale-to-aurora-killer-2\/\">appointed an arms dealer who sold ammunition to the Aurora mass shooter to the state&#8217;s board of education<\/a>, not long after appointing a 9\/11 hoaxer to the state&#8217;s &#8220;textbook commission.&#8221; What a shitshow.<\/li><li>Brandon Tensley writes at CNN about how and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/10\/us\/lgbtq-rights-desantis-race-deconstructed-newsletter\/index.html\">why the GOP is targeting LGBTQ+ rights<\/a> across the south and far west. I think the answer is simple: They&#8217;re pandering to their evangelical base. This is why the raving lunatics running Idaho want <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/2022\/3\/07\/idaho-seeks-life-prison-providing-gender-affirming-health-care\">life in prison for anyone providing gender-affirming care to trans kids<\/a>.<\/li><li>And in Texas, a family that once invited Attorney General Ken Paxton and his wife to dinner found themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2022\/03\/texas-briggle-family-trans-child-investigation-ken-paxton\/?\">the target of one of the state&#8217;s witch-hunt investigations into families with trans kids<\/a>. Shame on anyone who votes Republican in Texas this year. This policy is going to lead to more suicides and grievous harm to vulnerable people, all to satisfy a small population of bigots.<\/li><li>Disney has been <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/disney-pixar-same-sex-affection-censorship-dont-say-gay-bill-1235200582\/\">censoring same-sex affection in Pixar&#8217;s films<\/a>, according to several employees, who wrote a letter also demanding that the company stop donating to Florida legislators who voted for the state&#8217;s &#8220;don&#8217;t say gay&#8221; bill.<\/li><li>A Georgia man took an $85,000 SBA loan for his business, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/08\/us\/covid-fraud-pokemon-card-charizard.html\">then spent two-thirds of it on a rare Pok\u00e9mon card<\/a>.<\/li><li>An American man wanted on rape and sexual assault charges in Utah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-60676092\">is accused of faking his own death<\/a> and pretending to be someone else in a COVID ward in Scotland, where he&#8217;s since married a British woman. The man, suspected of being George Rossi, has been identified by his tattoos, and his adoptive father also says that it&#8217;s him.<\/li><li>A Trump-appointed judge <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinapublicpress.org\/52050\/federal-judge-blocks-legal-challenge-to-cawthorn\/\">dismissed a complaint against Rep. Madison Cawthorn<\/a>, alleging that his support of the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> insurrection made him ineligible to run for office, because people might take up arms otherwise.<\/li><li>Apparently Trump has been holding &#8220;contests&#8221; where small-donor dollars would win trips to meet him, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/03\/11\/trump-pac-new-orleans-contest-winner\/\">then they never award the prizes<\/a>, according to a report from the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/li><li>Board game news: Former Z-Man Games employees have founded a new publisher, Moon Crab Games, and announced their first game, <a href=\"https:\/\/leviathanwilds.com\/\">Leviathan Wilds<\/a>, a cooperative, tactical game of movement on various boards representing massive creatures the players try to climb.<\/li><li>Hamlet, a cute town-building game from the designer of the lovely game Petrichor, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/mightyboards\/hamlet-the-village-building-game\">fully funded already on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/sit-down\/pachamama\">So is Tiwanaku<\/a> (formerly known as Pachamama), a Minesweeper-inspired board game from the publishers of Magic Maze.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/envelopesofcash\/envelopes-of-cash\">And so is Envelopes of Cash<\/a>, a game about corrupt recruiting in college football (so, you know, reality), designed by a reader of mine.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I released my first ranking of draft prospects for 2022 over on The Athletic, and held a live Q&amp;A to take questions about it.
