Several researchers believe she is innocent, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/kathleen-folbigg-sudden-infant-death-mystery\/\">that a mutant gene was the real cause of the tragedy<\/a>.<\/li><li><em>MIT Technology Review<\/em> has a very long piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/02\/09\/1044985\/shi-zhengli-covid-lab-leak-wuhan\/\">the scientist at the center of the lab-leak conspiracy theory<\/a>.<\/li><li>The scourge of private equity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/when-private-equity-becomes-your-landlord\">now causing rapid inflation in housing prices<\/a>, with PE firms buying up apartment buildings, hiking rents, and skimping on or even forgoing basic services to tenants.<\/li><li><em>WIRED<\/em> looks at how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/phone-scam-phishing-finance-apps\/\">personal finance apps are making phone scams even easier<\/a>.<\/li><li>The <em>Harvard Gazette <\/em>ran an excerpt from Kevin Birmingham&#8217;s 2014 book <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/02\/rocky-path-to-publication-for-most-dangerous-book\/\">on <em>Ulysses&#8217; <\/em>long and tortuous road to publication<\/a>. I reviewed <em>The Most Dangerous Book<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/29\/the-most-dangerous-book\/\">back in 2016<\/a>.<\/li><li><em>MEL<\/em> gives us <a href=\"https:\/\/melmagazine.com\/en-us\/story\/chumbawamba-tubthumping\">the subterfuge behind the surprise pop hit &#8220;Tubthumping,&#8221;<\/a> and how the anarcho-communist band Chumbawamba used its success for their own ends.<\/li><li>Are you getting cardboard shipping boxes from U-Line? Not only does the family that owns U-Line fund the far-right site The Federalist, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/uline-shipping-january-sixth-donors-2062447\">they&#8217;ve given millions to other right-wing extremists<\/a>, including some of January 6<sup>th<\/sup> terrorists. If you use U-Line in your business, find another vendor. If you get a package in a U-Line box, contact the shipper and ask them to use someone else for their boxes.<\/li><li>Space elevators are a staple of hard science fiction novels and stories, but if one breaks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-happens-if-a-space-elevator-breaks\/\">it&#8217;s a massive and potentially fatal disaster<\/a>. The plot of <em>Green Mars<\/em> includes the sabotage of a space elevator, and while I don&#8217;t care for the novel, Kim Stanley Robinson does a reasonable job of getting the science right on what happens when the broken cable hits the ground.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UnionElections\/status\/1485334800483467274\">REI sent this union-busting email<\/a> to all of its employees, then published a podcast full of <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobinmag.com\/2022\/02\/rei-union-busting-podcast-land-acknowledgment-liberals\">dubious rationalizations for its anti-union efforts<\/a>.<\/li><li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> profiled the woman who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/02\/12\/rhodes-scholar-barista-fight-unionize-starbucks\">led the first successful effort to unionize a Starbucks store<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-00155-x\">COVID-19 becoming &#8220;endemic&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s becoming harmless<\/a>.<\/li><li>In fact, there&#8217;s evidence that the claims that the omicron variant is less severe than prior ones <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/02\/omicrons-milder-infections-likely-due-to-more-population-immunity\/\">are due to greater population immunity<\/a>, not to any reduced ability of the virus to cause serious illness. Also, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22923891\/omicron-subvariant-ba2-coronavirus\">a subvariant of concern<\/a>, too, although once again, vaccination confers substantial benefits.<\/li><li>COVID denialists on the right seem to think the virus is actually a person \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/thecolumn.substack.com\/p\/covid-isnt-a-human-being-it-doesnt\">at least in the language they use to minimize it<\/a>.<\/li><li>Right-wing pundits, including Jordan Peterson, were up in arms because a Boston hospital denied a heart transplant to a man who refused the COVID-19 vaccines \u2013 but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-60132765\">such rules are routine<\/a> to increase the likelihood of the patient&#8217;s survival.<\/li><li>Anti-vaccine loon Christiane Northrup has <a href=\"https:\/\/mainebeacon.com\/major-anti-vaccine-conspiracist-contributes-to-lepage-other-maine-republicans\/\">become a major donor to Maine Republican candidates<\/a>, including former Governor Paul LePage.<\/li><li>Two Long Island nurses have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/29\/us\/long-island-nurses-fake-vaccine-cards.html\">charged with selling fake vaccine cards<\/a> and entering the false information into vaccination databases, taking home $1.5 million in the process. But what happens to the people who bought them?<\/li><li>An inevitable consequence of all of this anti-vaccine misinformation is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-60200774\">now measles vaccination rates are falling in the UK<\/a>.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, Republicans in 14 states are pushing bills that would <a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/news\/article\/medical-boards-pressured-to-let-it-slide-when-doctors-spread-covid-misinformation\/\">block medical boards from censuring doctors who spread misinformation<\/a>; in Tennessee, the Know-Nothings in the state legislature even pressured the medical board into removing language from its website discouraging such doctors.<\/li><li>Speaking of foundations of misinformation, Fox News was happy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/fox-news-wanted-viewers-hear-anti-vax-troopers-story-until-he-died-covid\">talk to an anti-vax state trooper \u2026 until he died of COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li><li>A New Jersey police officer was driving drunk when he struck a pedestrian \u2026 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/investigations\/cop-fatally-struck-nurse-actions-crash-shock-victims-loved-ones-rcna12072\">then put the body in his car and drove home with it<\/a>. He didn&#8217;t call 911. He now faces a dozen felony charges.<\/li><li>The story about the Los Angeles train robbery a few weeks ago, which made news across the country and even in Europe, is really about <a href=\"https:\/\/whowhatwhy.org\/culture\/journalism-media\/the-great-los-angeles-train-robbery-is-an-exercise-in-misdirection\/\">how Union Pacific laid off 4\/5 of its security force<\/a> \u2013 and how the mainstream media increasingly just buys whatever corporations are selling.<\/li><li>This is horrifying: San Francisco police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/San-Francisco-police-linked-a-woman-to-a-crime-16918673.php\">used DNA from a woman&#8217;s rape kit<\/a> to identify her as a suspect in another crime. And we wonder why women don&#8217;t come forward to report their assaults. I&#8217;ve already reached out to two state Senators in Delaware, and to the Attorney General, to see what can be done to make sure this does not occur here.<\/li><li>Over 650 Philly cops who claim they&#8217;re too sick or injured to work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/a\/philadelphia-police-injury-claims-heart-lung-abuse-20220201.html\">are fine holding down other jobs<\/a>.<\/li><li>A tax cheat and father of a child murderer has bankrolled a right-wing streaming network that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/24\/steve-bannon-war-room-real-americas-voice\/\">has given Steve Bannon a platform again<\/a>. It&#8217;s available through most major streaming platforms, too.<\/li><li>A tremendous piece of local journalism led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2022\/01\/brookside-police-chief-mike-jones-resigns-after-alcom-report-on-traffic-trap.html\">the resignation of the police chief of Brookside<\/a>, Alabama, who had set up a racket that scammed drivers out of over $500,000 a year in fines and forfeitures \u2013 often when they were no closer to the town than the local interstate.<\/li><li>A Republican state senator in Texas has sworn in a declaration that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/01\/26\/texas-redistricting-kel-seliger-redistricting\">the state&#8217;s Republicans violated federal voting rights laws in a recent redistricting<\/a>.<\/li><li>Minneapolis police insisted on a no-knock warrant in a predawn raid \u2013 raid, a word that should be reserved for war, or perhaps when there&#8217;s a lost ark involved \u2013 on an apartment in the city. They ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/minneapolis-police-insisted-on-no-knock-warrant-before-amir-locke-shooting-city-sets-moratorium\/600143065\/\">murdering an innocent civilian<\/a> sleeping in that apartment.<\/li><li>Spokane district attorney Larry Haskell is under fire, again, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inlander.com\/spokane\/for-over-12-years-prosecutor-haskells-wifes-posts-have-sparked-controversies-about-him-and-his-office\/Content?oid=23261324\">his wife&#8217;s long history of racist and white nationalist comments online<\/a>. It&#8217;s more disturbing that voters keep electing him.<\/li><li>Families in West Virginia are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/18\/1081678752\/west-virginia-school-christian-assembly-lawsuit\">suing a school that held a Christian revival on campus during school hours<\/a>, with some teachers forcing students to attend. This isn&#8217;t the first such incident in this school district.<\/li><li>I liked <em>Encanto<\/em>, and assume it&#8217;s going to win the Oscar for best animated film, but I noticed the script glossed over the weird power dynamic between the Madrigals and the townsfolk. Jim Vorel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/movies\/disney\/encanto-problems-themes-power-vs-dependency-abuela-madrigals\/\">wrote about that very topic for Paste<\/a>.<\/li><li>Hannah Keyser has a great piece at Yahoo! Sports asking <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/why-does-baseball-hall-of-fame-voting-make-people-so-mad-001733032.html\">why people get so mad over Hall of Fame voting<\/a>. The abuse was worse than ever this year.<\/li><li>Ohio&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2022\/02\/15\/gerrymandering-leads-to-extreme-laws-most-ohioans-dont-want\/\">extreme gerrymandering leads to more extreme laws<\/a> from legislators who don&#8217;t have to worry about re-election, even though the laws are often opposed by a majority of Ohio voters.<\/li><li>The mayor of Ridgeland, Mississippi, a suburb of Jackson, decided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippifreepress.org\/20068\/ridgeland-mayor-demands-lgbtq-book-purge-threatens-library-funding\/\">to order the city&#8217;s libraries to remove all LGBTQ+ materials before he&#8217;d release their funding<\/a>. The city&#8217;s leaders are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlbt.com\/2022\/02\/16\/ridgeland-leaders-not-withholding-funding-because-books-library\/\">denying<\/a> this is what&#8217;s happening, but a local nonprofit group has raised all of the missing funds from donations.<\/li><li>This feels like old news now, but <a href=\"http:\/\/tnholler.com\/2022\/01\/mcminn-county-bans-maus-pulitzer-prize-winning-holocaust-book\/\">McMinn County, Tennessee, banned <em>Maus<\/em>,<\/a> the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust, from its school curricula because there are naked mice in it.<\/li><li>Who&#8217;s behind all the book-banning movements? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jan\/24\/us-conservatives-campaign-books-ban-schools\">Major conservative dark-money donors<\/a>, of course.<\/li><li>And they&#8217;re also <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/steep-rise-gag-orders-many-sloppily-drafted\/\">pushing educational gag orders<\/a> across the country, with over 120 such bills introduced in the last 13 months.<\/li><li>Like the one in Florida, supported by the death-loving governor there, that wants to force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulwark.com\/desantis-shapiro-co-want-to-put-my-kid-in-the-closet\/\">LGBTQ+ kids back in the closet<\/a>. (DeSantis can&#8217;t even bring himself to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-695348\">condemn a neo-Nazi rally<\/a> in Orlando.)<\/li><li>Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/02\/14\/critical-race-theory-teachers-fear-laws\/\">the laws targeting the chimera of critical race theory in schools<\/a>, which threatens teachers&#8217; livelihoods and even their freedom.<\/li><li>LZ Granderson writes about the extreme illogic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2022-02-17\/michele-tafoya-nfl-systemic-racism-critical-race-theory-minnesota-governor\">Michelle Tafoya leaving the media to campaign against racism education<\/a>, when she herself lives in a town that has become majority white thanks to racial covenants in housing contracts.<\/li><li>The British government recently moved to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/27\/uk\/virginity-testing-hymen-repair-as-equals-intl-cmd\/index.html\">something called &#8220;virginity repair&#8221; surgery illegal<\/a>. I didn&#8217;t know this was a thing, but it is clearly founded in some seriously deranged religious beliefs.<\/li><li>Matt Walsh, espouser of misogynistic and homophobic views under the guise of Christianity, <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1490799028401020932.html\">tried to trick a bunch of trans people<\/a> into participating in a documentary attacking trans rights.<\/li><li>This is from before the Oscar nominations were announced, but the <em>LA Times<\/em>&#8216; Justin Chang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2022-01-27\/oscar-voting-drive-my-car-deserves-best-picture-nomination\">implored the Academy to nominate <em>Drive My Car<\/em> for Best Picture<\/a> \u2013 which they did.<\/li><li>Craig Calcaterra continues to expose New Albany, Ohio, school board member Philip Derrow as <a href=\"https:\/\/craigcalcaterra.com\/blog\/philip-derrow-is-back-on-his-bullshit\/\">a science-denying history-ignorant turnip<\/a>.<\/li><li>Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2022\/01\/31\/florida-state-professors-say-their-building-killing-them\">a building at Florida State University causing cancer<\/a> in the people who work there?
