I had one new piece for subscribers to the Athletic this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3eECRjk\">breaking down my Hall of Fame ballot<\/a>, which went about as well as you might expect. I held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3mvbeNZ\">Klawchat<\/a> on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over at Paste, I reviewed the game <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3sBZbSZ\">Iberian Gauge<\/a>, an 18xx game that&#8217;s on the shorter side for that genre, and wrote up <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3pz1Z1i\">everything I saw and played at PAX Unplugged<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sent out a new edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">my free email newsletter<\/a> this week, talking about music and how we consume and categorize it has changed since I first became a big fan of pop music about 40 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also appeared on my friend Elliott Garstin&#8217;s podcast, Twenty Eyes Radio, to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3tFZWrN0B6QvQ047wyqEDP\">my favorite songs and albums of 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: Dr. Irene Bosch, a molecular biologist currently at MIT, created a rapid test for COVID-19 in the spring of 2020, and had arranged for its manufacture. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/this-scientist-created-a-rapid-test-just-weeks-into-the-pandemic-heres-why-you-still-cant-get-it?\">Thanks to the FDA, you still can&#8217;t get it<\/a>.<\/li><li>Dr. Robert Malone is a real scientist who has falsely claimed credit for inventing mRNA vaccines. That&#8217;s led him down a path of <a href=\"https:\/\/respectfulinsolence.com\/2021\/12\/17\/dr-robert-malone-goes-full-antivaccine-conspiracist\/\">straight-up vaccine denialism<\/a>, enough to get him suspended from Twitter this past week.<\/li><li>COVID-19 denialists like to claim that deaths from the virus are overcounter, but the truth is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/news\/nation\/2021\/12\/22\/covid-deaths-obscured-inaccurate-death-certificates\/8899157002\/\">they&#8217;re significantly undercounted<\/a> in many counties, based on large spikes in excess deaths that aren\u2019t attributed to the virus for mostly innocuous reasons.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/defector.com\/what-the-hell-is-this-company-the-76ers-just-partnered-with\/\">Did the 76ers just announce a big partnership with a fake company<\/a>? Defector was unable to find any evidence that the CEO of Color Star is even a real person.<\/li><li>Wichita juvenile detention center employees murdered a Black teenager in their custody in September b<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/12\/29\/kansas-cedric-lofton-prone-restraint\/?utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\">y restraining him in the prone position<\/a> \u2013 which police also used to restrain George Floyd when they killed him.<\/li><li>The Associated Press has the story of an Army veteran who spent a decade working for the FBI by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/florida-race-and-ethnicity-racial-injustice-veterans-ku-klux-klan-fa0ec4120b1457f56c527108074795b5\">infiltrating KKK groups to identify law enforcement officers who were members<\/a>.<\/li><li>Buzzfeed investigates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/otilliasteadman\/unruly-contracts-onlyfans-creators-workers\">two agencies that have exploited content creators on OnlyFans<\/a>, and now face lawsuits claiming extortionary practices, failure to pay creators, failure to pay overtime, and more. Workers&#8217; rights are workers&#8217; rights, regardless of the industry.<\/li><li>A &#8220;terrible&#8221; book called <em>Viral <\/em>that pushes lab-leak conspiracy theories <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/164688\/viral-lab-leak-theory-covid-19\">shows why people won&#8217;t let that idea go<\/a>. Indeed, there&#8217;s new evidence further supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/starts-with-a-bang\/origins-covid-19\/\">the hypothesis that COVID-19 is a natural phenomenon<\/a>.<\/li><li>One thing, and only one thing, has worked to get unvaccinated people to get the jab: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/21\/opinion\/vaccine-hesitancy-covid-omicron.html\">Employer mandates<\/a>.<\/li><li>In the &#8220;it&#8217;s about fucking time&#8221; department, California revoked the license of a doctor who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/california-revokes-mary-kelly-sutton-medical-license-for-fake-vaccine-exemptions\/\">gave out fake vaccine exemptions<\/a>.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine have developed a vaccine, CORBEVAX, that they&#8217;re allowing countries around the world to use without patent restrictions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaschildrens.org\/texas-children%E2%80%99s-hospital-and-baylor-college-medicine-covid-19-vaccine-technology-secures-emergency\">It&#8217;s just been approved for use in India<\/a>, with more countries to follow. This might be the best weapon we have for slowing the pandemic.<\/li><li>An Oklahoma lawmaker (guess the party!) wants to give parents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcalesternews.com\/cnhi_network\/oklahoma-bill-gives-parents-the-right-to-have-a-book-removed-from-a-school-library\/article_2cd5f468-641c-11ec-9674-475897eac565.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">the right to demand that a school remove any book from its library<\/a>, and would reward such parents a bounty of $10,000 per day if the school doesn&#8217;t remove the book. It&#8217;s really about targeting LGBTQ+ books (and, by extension, LGBTQ+ kids), of course.<\/li><li>One small thing anyone can do to help fight climate change: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/eating-less-red-meat-is-something-individuals-can-do-to-help-the-climate-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eat less red meat<\/a>.<\/li><li>Georgia Republicans are trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.augustachronicle.com\/story\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/lincoln-county-attempts-eliminate-six-polling-places\/8970073002\/\">eliminate six of the seven polling stations in Lincoln County<\/a>, a move activists see as targeting minority voters.<\/li><li>&#8220;Christmas Wrapping&#8221; is unavoidable at this time of year; I&#8217;ve grown to hate the song thanks to a job in retail in the fall of 1989. Yahoo! has a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.style.yahoo.com\/couldnt-miss-this-one-this-year-the-surprising-complex-story-of-the-waitresses-christmas-wrapping-212336258.html\">the song&#8217;s complex history<\/a>.<\/li><li>The discourse, if you can even call it that, over critics&#8217; disdain for <em>Don&#8217;t Look Up<\/em> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/winter\/status\/1476597697893130240\">symptom of society&#8217;s growing anti-intellectualism<\/a>.<\/li><li>Asmodee purchased Miniature Market, one of the biggest board game &amp; miniatures retailers in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/blogpost\/126073\/online-us-retailer-miniature-market-purchased-asmo\">at some point in 2021<\/a>, without any announcement.<\/li><li>McSweeney&#8217;s offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/articles\/an-faq-about-your-new-birth-control-the-music-of-rush\">An FAQ About Your New Birth Control: The Music of Rush<\/a>.
