My music rankings will go up here next week, and I&#8217;ll have a PAX Unplugged recap at Paste next week too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing new at the Athletic from me, as I work on prospect rankings and there are no transactions to cover. I&#8217;ll do a chat next week, though, even if it&#8217;s mostly non-baseball stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On The Keith Law Show, <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/podcast\/168-the-keith-law-show\/?episode=82\">I spoke with Nik Sharma<\/a>, author of the great cookbooks <em>Season<\/em> and <em>The Flavor Equation<\/em>, about those books, underused ingredients, and his unusual career arc. Kennedy, Jr., has emerged as one of the most dangerous anti-vaccine propagandists in the world, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/local\/how-a-kennedy-built-an-anti-vaccine-juggernaut-amid-covid-19\/2590911\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">it&#8217;s made his &#8220;charity&#8221; a ton of money<\/a>. He also gave a slightly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gawker.com\/money\/a-very-weird-interview-with-robert-f-kennedy-jr\">unhinged interview to Gawker<\/a>, in which he refuses to admit he invoked the Holocaust as a comparison to vaccine mandates in his book. (He already did this back in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/political\/la-me-pc-robert-kennedy-jr-apologizes-for-likening-vaccine-impacts-to-holocaust-20150413-story.html\">and apologized<\/a>. He&#8217;s just back on his bullshit.) He&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/pubcit.typepad.com\/clpblog\/2021\/10\/robert-f-kennedy-jr-sues-to-identify-blogger-who-pointed-out-that-he-spoke-at-rally-connected-to-neo.html\">suing a blogger<\/a> who wrote that he spoke at a rally with German far-right figures back in August \u2013 which he did, at a rally heavily attended by neo-Nazis.<\/li><li>Utah is the second-driest state in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/why-the-second-driest-state-rejects-water-conservation\">but rejects water-conservation efforts<\/a>, thanks to lobbyists and Republican politicians. (Insert joke about it being a dry state here.)<\/li><li><em>The Atlantic <\/em>looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2022\/01\/children-sex-trafficking-conspiracy-epidemic\/620845\/\">the actual harm done by the right-wing&#8217;s fake child-sex-ring panics<\/a> of the last few years (think Wayfair). Sex trafficking is real. You don&#8217;t need to buy into a conspiracy theory for that.<\/li><li>You probably already saw the Atlantic&#8217;s extremely long piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2022\/01\/january-6-insurrection-trump-coup-2024-election\/620843\/\">how Trump and his acolytes are well on their way to stealing the 2024 election<\/a>.<\/li><li>The <em>New Yorker<\/em> has the crazy story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/12\/13\/half-a-billion-in-bitcoin-lost-in-the-dump\">a Welshman who threw away a hard drive with his bitcoin keys<\/a> \u2013 and the bitcoin would now be worth a half a billion dollars, except that the town that controls the dump where his hard drive is located won&#8217;t let him dig for it.<\/li><li>Geraldine DeRuiter, who writes as The Everywhereist, has an incredible takedown of a <a href=\"https:\/\/everywhereist.com\/2021\/12\/bros-restaurant-lecce-we-eat-at-the-worst-michelin-starred-restaurant-ever\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">horrendous meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant<\/a> in Lecce, Italy.<\/li><li>Police officers in Torrance, California, have jeopardized hundreds of cases through their practice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-12-08\/torrance-police-traded-racist-homophobic-texts-it-could-jeopardize-hundreds-of-cases?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">sending each other racist and homophobic texts<\/a>. Decades of television, like the returning <em>Law &amp; Order<\/em>, have indoctrinated viewers to believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/law-and-order-policing-media\">the police are always the good guys<\/a>.<\/li><li>Scammers in India targeted several high-profile female journalists who were critical of the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/16\/technology\/harvard-job-scam-india.html\">with an elaborate scam that promised trips to or jobs at Harvard<\/a>. The university knew about these scams, at least at some point, and did not appear to take any action to stop them.<\/li><li>There&#8217;s a lot of media coverage of retailers claiming theft is at an all-time high, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2021-12-15\/organized-retail-theft-crime-rate\">the data do not back this up<\/a>.<\/li><li>A Tennessee high school teacher tried to teach his students about white privilege, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2021\/12\/06\/tennessee-teacher-fired-critical-race-theory\/\">ended up losing his job<\/a>. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nashvillescene.com\/news\/pithinthewind\/tennessee-department-of-education-updates-critical-race-theory-guidelines\/article_8428d512-4c90-11ec-b3d2-13b5379f5175.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">Tennessee is banning the teaching of words and concepts<\/a> that are tangentially related to critical race theory, because there is no racism in Tennessee any more, obviously. Oh, and the state&#8217;s medical board posted and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/health\/2021\/12\/07\/medical-board-deletes-anti-misinformation-policy-amid-gop-pressure\/6416959001\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">then deleted rules against spreading misinformation after pressure from the Republican Party<\/a>. Nice state y&#8217;all have down there.<\/li><li>Some states are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/06\/some-doctors-spreading-coronavirus-misinformation-are-being-punished\/\">moving against doctors and nurses who spread misinformation<\/a>, at least.<\/li><li>Some large, early vaccination surveys <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/12\/vaccination-surveys-fell-victim-to-big-data-paradox-harvard-researchers-say\/\">fell prey to the big data paradox<\/a>.<\/li><li>Andrew Cuomo appointed a crony of his to run the SUNY system of public universities in New York. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/SUNY-chancellor-heard-berating-insulting-employee-16681883.php\">Turns out the guy is a bully and a creep<\/a>. Are you shocked? I&#8217;m shocked.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/12\/15\/nyt-project-veritas-ruling-prior-restraint\/\">A judge is preventing the <em>New York Times<\/em> from reporting on Project Veritas<\/a>, which would set a horrible precedent by allowing subjects to sue to stop negative coverage.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/kellogg-permanently-replace-striking-workers-union-rejects-new-contract-2021-12-07\/?taid=61afee8878093a00018b809f&amp;utm_source=pocket_mylist\">Kellogg is hiring scabs to replace striking workers<\/a>. Don&#8217;t buy Frosted Flakes, folks.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-08\/kickstarter-blockchain-will-combine-crowdfunding-with-crypto\">Kickstarter is moving its crowdfunding platform to blockchain<\/a>. Ryan Reynolds But Why dot gif?<\/li><li>Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa correctly described social media as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-59613540\">toxic sludge<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li><li>A school district in Utah had two students wear racist costumes, so they showed students a diversity video. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hjnews.com\/freeaccess\/concerned-residents-speak-out-on-sky-view-incident-at-cache-county-school-board-meeting\/article_aafef240-d196-5eb1-9c88-620b19deea88.html\">White parents in Utah called it an attack on them<\/a>. I mean, it was, but not in the way they think.<\/li><li>Author and essayist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/news\/state\/kentucky\/article256616171.html\">bell hooks died this week at 69<\/a>.<\/li><li>Board game news: <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/blogpost\/125985\/asmodee-sell-275-billion-swedens-embracer-group\">A Swedish video game company is buying board game behemoth Asmodee<\/a> from the private equity firm that owned it, which I see as very good news for Asmodee itself and the tabletop space in general.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/sit-down\/pachamama\">Pachamama is heading back to Kickstarter<\/a> soon after its first go-round didn&#8217;t get much traction.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My big item this week was my annual ranking of the top board games of the year for Paste, which runs 15 titles deep (plus a bonus for the best reissue).
