And, as the holidays approach, I&#8217;ll remind you all every week that I have two books out, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942739\"><em>The Inside Game<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062490230\"><em>Smart Baseball<\/em><\/a>, that would make great gifts for the readers (especially baseball fans) on your lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: An investigation by local TV channel 11-WXIA in Atlanta revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/news\/investigations\/the-reveal\/johns-creek-officers-fired-after-11alive-records-request\/85-08874ea6-e771-4645-9ce9-18661824f529\">corruption and sexual harassment among Johns Creek police officers<\/a>, leading to the termination of three of the department&#8217;s officers \u2013 although others involved haven&#8217;t been sanctioned and remain on the force.<\/li><li>This seems especially vile, preying on truly vulnerable people: scammers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/scammers-are-using-fake-job-ads-to-steal-peoples-identities\">using fake job ads to defraud would-be applicants<\/a>.<\/li><li>Over 200 American academics, researchers in history and political science in related fields, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newamerica.org\/political-reform\/statements\/statement-in-support-of-the-freedom-to-vote-act\/\">signed an open letter in support of the Freedom to Vote Act<\/a>.<\/li><li>Two conservative commentators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/21\/business\/jonah-goldberg-steve-hayes-quit-fox-tucker-carlson.html\">quit lucrative roles at Fox News<\/a> in protest of Tucker Carlson&#8217;s program that pushed false narratives and outright misinformation about the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> insurrection. One of them, Jonah Goldberg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2021-11-22\/jonah-goldberg-leaving-fox-news-tucker-carlson\">explained his decision<\/a> in an editorial for the <em>L.A. Times<\/em>.<\/li><li>The QAnon JFK Cult in Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/qjb8mv\/qanon-jfk-cult-tearing-families-apart\">is tearing families apart<\/a>. Did you know &#8220;Q&#8221; hasn&#8217;t posted in a year? Yet the hoax&#8217;s adherents still can&#8217;t let it go. The <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3Cle25E\">cognitive dissonance<\/a> is strong with them.<\/li><li>The Kenosha protests <a href=\"https:\/\/presswatchers.org\/2021\/11\/rittenhouse-shooting-took-place-amid-violent-protests-let-me-rewrite-that-for-you\/\">were not violent or deadly<\/a> until Kyle Rittenhouse showed up. Media coverage of his acquittal is revising history.<\/li><li>One of the co-creators of the game <em>Oregon Trail<\/em> says he never made any money off the game, but <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2021\/11\/oregon-trail-game-history-inventor-don-rawitsch.html\">that was never his goal<\/a> anyway.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/other\/2021\/11\/22\/michigan-panthers-part-rebooted-usfl-they-wont-play-here-until-2023\/8724531002\/\">The USFL is coming back<\/a>! I&#8217;ll believe it when we get the first kickoff, but I&#8217;ll wash my Tampa Bay Bandits jersey just in case.<\/li><li>An epidemiologist wrote a lengthy overview of <a href=\"https:\/\/yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com\/p\/new-concerning-variant-b11529\">what the omicron variant of COVID-19 might mean<\/a>. Dr. Peter Hotez says <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1464357734766284802.html\">it&#8217;s a concern, but &#8220;the sky isn&#8217;t falling.&#8221;<\/a> Our bodies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2021\/02\/antibody-evolution\/618004\/\">aren&#8217;t helpless against new variants<\/a>, though. The emergence of new variants is an inevitable outcome of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/nov\/26\/new-covid-variant-rich-countries-hoarding-vaccines\">rich countries hoarding vaccines<\/a> (or destroying them).<\/li><li>COVID denialists like to say that Japan used ivermectin to stop the virus&#8217;s spread there. <a href=\"https:\/\/gidmk.medium.com\/ivermectin-didnt-save-japan-from-covid-19-afd64641ee4d\">They are wrong<\/a>.<\/li><li>It&#8217;s better than nothing, I guess: A St. Louis cop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/former-st-louis-cop-gets-366-days-for-attack-on-undercover-colleague\/article_6f8245a6-12d4-591b-afa6-eb180154fe46.html\">who assaulted an undercover colleague posing as a protestor<\/a> was sentenced to a year in jail.<\/li><li>The superintendent of Alachua County Public Schools in Florida wrote an op ed in the <em>Washington Post<\/em> saying that the state&#8217;s new ban on any future mask mandates or quarantines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/11\/25\/florida-anti-mask-law-denies-teachers-tools-protect-students-covid\/\">robs schools of critical tools to fight the virus and keep kids in school<\/a>. DeSantis&#8217;s pandering is going to kill people.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/south-carolina-legislators-want-to-cancel-tenure\">South Carolina Republicans are trying to cancel tenure<\/a>, replacing it with five-year contracts and requiring at least a 2\/2 course load, which will go a long way towards killing research at universities there.<\/li><li>Civil Liberties International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/nov\/22\/us-list-backsliding-democracies-civil-liberties-international\">added the United States to its list of &#8220;backsliding&#8221; democracies<\/a> for the first time.<\/li><li>A Tory MP in the UK claims that having a woman play the main character in Doctor Who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-politics-59421259\">is hurting boys by removing a role model for them<\/a>, and contributing to young boys turning to crime, never mind that the Doctor is a genderless alien who takes human form. He obviously doesn&#8217;t even watch the show, since the main character is not named &#8220;Doctor Who.&#8221;<\/li><li>Jared Leto is unrecognizable in <em>House of Gucci<\/em> under prosthetics and a bald cap, part of a growing trend toward physical verisimilitude on screen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/prosthetics-jared-leto-house-of-gucci.html?\">Is that a good thing for actors or viewers<\/a>?<\/li><li>A new paper published in <em>Nature<\/em> describes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41567-021-01351-8\">superionic ice, a newly-discovered phase of water<\/a> that might resemble what&#8217;s found deep inside outer planets like Neptune.<\/li><li>A &#8220;good guy with a gun&#8221; took down a mass shooter, and then was shot and killed by a cop who mistook him for the bad guy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2021\/11\/08\/olde-town-arvada-shooting-johnny-hurley\/\">That cop will not face charges<\/a>.<\/li><li>There will also be no charges for the man who &#8220;accidentally discharged&#8221; his gun and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlky.com\/article\/shelbyville-accidental-shooting-boy-no-charges-now\/38323811\">killed a 10-year-old boy the other day<\/a>.<\/li><li>Ark Nova, an upcoming heavy game from Capstone, <a href=\"https:\/\/capstone-games.com\/board-games\/ark-nova\/\">is available for pre-order<\/a>.
