If you&#8217;ve played Machi Koro, this has a similar vibe, but without the dice or the unbalanced cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My guest on my podcast this week was <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/podcast\/168-the-keith-law-show\/?episode=79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christina Kahrl<\/a>, who helped me preview the World Series and some of this winter&#8217;s free agent market. And, as the holidays approach, I&#8217;ll remind you all every week that I have two books out, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942739\"><em>The Inside Game<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062490230\"><em>Smart Baseball<\/em><\/a>, that would make great gifts for the readers (especially baseball fans) on your lists<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: ProPublica has the story of how Liberty University, founded by Jerry Falwell and run for years by his ethically challenged son, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/the-liberty-way-how-liberty-university-discourages-and-dismisses-students-reports-of-sexual-assaults\">discourages and dismisses students&#8217; reports of rape<\/a> and sexual assaults.<\/li><li>Why is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/commentisfree\/2021\/oct\/23\/judith-butler-gender-ideology-backlash\">the idea of gender provoking such a backlash<\/a> around the world? It&#8217;s an unholy alliance of religion, misogyny, and homophobia\/transphobia, and feminists should not ally themselves with those trying to roll back progress on human rights.<\/li><li>Steph Apstein spoke to multiple Native American leaders in asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/2021\/10\/28\/atlanta-braves-tomahawk-chop-daily-cover\">why MLB still allows the &#8220;synchronized, team-sanctioned racism&#8221; of the tomahawk chop<\/a>? Meanwhile, Rob Manfred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/anthonywitrado\/2021\/10\/27\/rob-manfred-fails-to-strike-the-proper-tone-by-supporting-the-atlanta-braves-offensive-tomahawk-chop\/?sh=502642f46046&amp;utm_source=pocket_mylist\">totally whiffed when asked about the chop<\/a>, lying about Native Americans&#8217; views on it and landing on the wrong side of the issue.<\/li><li>The Columbia Journalism Review published the second part of its series on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/tow_center_reports\/community-newsmaker-metric-media-local-news.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paid advocacy groups writing content for local news outlets<\/a>.<\/li><li>The Posies broke up this week as multiple women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuow.org\/stories\/as-sexual-misconduct-allegations-dog-ken-stringfellow-of-the-posies-the-band-breaks-up\">accused lead singer Ken Stringfellow of sexual misconduct<\/a>.<\/li><li>That SEPTA (Philadelphia transit) rape incident where people watched and filmed the assault without calling the police? Yeah, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/commentary\/philadelphia-septa-rape-police-lying-20211024.html\">the cops made that part up<\/a>. The lesson here is to not take authorities at their word.<\/li><li>Bobcat Goldthwait has some thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoreader.com\/film\/ive-always-considered-myself-an-outsider\/\">the hoax that is &#8220;cancel culture.&#8221;<\/a><\/li><li>A white man in Texas killed a Moroccan man who was sitting in a car in his own driveway. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/texas-man-terry-turner-finally-arrested-over-murder-of-moroccan-driver-adil-dghoughi\">It took 11 days for authorities to arrest him<\/a>.<\/li><li>My colleague Levi Weaver called out the Rangers for <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2905710\/2021\/10\/22\/weaver-the-rangers-persistent-refusal-to-acknowledge-lgbtq-fans-and-community-is-unacceptable\/\">their refusal to acknowledge LGBTQ+ fans<\/a>. It&#8217;s outdated, it&#8217;s exclusionary, and it&#8217;s pandering to the wrong element.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/10\/28\/1050175142\/naacp-pro-athletes-not-sign-texas-teams-voting-abortion-laws\">the NAACP urged pro athletes to avoid signing with teams in Texas<\/a> over the state&#8217;s rollbacks of reproductive, voting, and LGBTQ+ rights.<\/li><li>Oh, and a Texas state rep who&#8217;s running for attorney general is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/10\/26\/texas-school-books-race-sexuality\/\">trying to start a book-banning investigation of public schools in the state<\/a>, demanding that schools disclose if they have any of <em>eight hundred and fifty books<\/em> \u2013 not in their curricula, but just in the buildings.<\/li><li>Ohio isn&#8217;t that much better, as the Republican Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/ohio-state-board-of-education-president-laura-kohler-author-of-anti-racism-resolution-to-resign-friday.html\">forced out the Board of Education President who authored an anti-racism resolution<\/a> that has since been repealed, because in Ohio, racism is good!<\/li><li>Chevron&#8217;s ten-year vendetta against an environmental activist who exposed the company&#8217;s extensive pollution in Ecuador has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/depauliaonline.com\/55457\/nation\/environmental-activist-steven-donziger-facing-jail-time-for-criminal-contempt\/\">the activist&#8217;s jailing on contempt charges<\/a>. Steven Donziger has been under house arrest for over two years, all part of the company&#8217;s revenge against him for his expos\u00e9 and the $9.5 billion judgment against them in Ecuador.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2294250-how-much-less-likely-are-you-to-spread-covid-19-if-youre-vaccinated\/\">Vaccinated people are 63% less likely to spread<\/a> the delta variant of COVID-19 than unvaccinated people are.<\/li><li>The bizarre backlash against critical race theory in elementary schools \u2013 where it&#8217;s never taught \u2013 was in reality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/charles-koch-crt-backlash\/\">an astroturfing campaign by conservative dark-money titan Charles Koch<\/a>.<\/li><li>Jim Squires, a Democrat running for the U.S. House in Texas&#8217; 22<sup>nd<\/sup> district, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Squires2022\/status\/1453286034050109440\">held up a &#8220;The &#8216;Chop&#8217; is Racist&#8221; sign<\/a> at Game 2 of the World Series.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nothing new at the Athletic this week as I finished writing up the top 50 free agents ranking, which will run shortly after the World Series ends.
