I only got one of the wild-card winners right, and at the moment one of my four LDS picks is down 0 games to 2. Anyway, I held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3Fjp2my\">Klawchat<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over at <em>Paste<\/em>, I reviewed the <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3DkDNDR\">semi-cooperative horror-themed board game Deranged<\/a>, which I found too derivative of games like Arkham Horror without offering enough new ideas or mechanics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On my podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/podcast\/168-the-keith-law-show\/?episode=77\">I spoke with Jeremy Booth<\/a>, founder of Program 15 and the Future Stars Series, talking about the 2022 draft&#8217;s deep high school class, player development in the majors, and more. The UK&#8217;s rough equivalent to our Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Booker confers financial success on nearly all of its winners, often changing the courses of their careers.<\/li><li>Ed Yong writes that we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2021\/09\/america-prepared-next-pandemic\/620238\/\">unprepared for the next pandemic<\/a> as we refuse to learn lessons from our mishandling of this one.<\/li><li>A &#8220;dead&#8221; oil tanker that has been moored at a Yemeni port for 45 years is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/10\/11\/the-ship-that-became-a-bomb\">in danger of falling apart, sinking, or blowing up<\/a>, all of which would lead to a massive humanitarian and environmental disaster, with minimal plans to prevent this catastrophe and no help from the Houthi forces that control western Yemen and its Red Sea ports.<\/li><li>Students who were victims of sexual assault at Moody Bible Institute, an evangelical Christian college, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/moody-bible-institute-purity-culture-evangelicalism-sexual-assault-title-ix-mbi-survivors-group\/\">found themselves blamed and punished<\/a> while their abusers often escaped consequences. The same school fired a professor who helped students file a Title IX complaint a few years ago. Just like Jesus told his followers to do!<\/li><li>You read about the bad art friend, right? You should read about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/05\/magazine\/dorland-v-larson.html\">the bad art friend<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/oct\/07\/kelloggs-workers-strike-offshore-jobs\">Kellogg workers are on strike<\/a>, after months of being forced to work 7 days a week, 16 hours a day, and now threats to outsource their jobs. You may choose to join me in avoiding buying their products while their workers are fighting for basic rights.<\/li><li>Case reports continue to show the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/960526?faf=1&amp;src=soc_tw_211008_mscpedt_news_neuro_afce\">risk of death and severe illness in children<\/a> who contract COVID-19, such as the 8-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy who died of cerebral edemas due to COVID infections.<\/li><li>Yet another ivermectin\/COVID-19 study that claimed to show a benefit <a href=\"https:\/\/gidmk.medium.com\/is-ivermectin-for-covid-19-based-on-fraudulent-research-part-5-fe41044dab13\">has serious problems with its data<\/a>.<\/li><li>Writing in The Cancer Letter, the newsletter of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Arthur Caplan, who has written several books on the policies of Nazi Germany called out the non-virologist <a href=\"https:\/\/cancerletter.com\/guest-editorial\/20211008_5\/\">Dr. Vinay Prasad&#8217;s recent comparison of COVID-19 mitigation measures<\/a> to fascism, calling them &#8220;fundamentally racist.&#8221;<\/li><li>Moderna is prioritizing profits over public health, keeping prices for its COVID-19 vaccines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/09\/business\/moderna-covid-vaccine.html\">out of reach of many poorer countries<\/a>. Is the global benefit of curtailing the pandemic enough that wealthy nations should subsidize vaccinations in poorer ones?<\/li><li>&#8220;Pro-life&#8221; Missouri Governor Mike Parson (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-58811241\">declined to stay the execution of a man<\/a> with the mental capacity of a small child, because nothing says you believe in the sanctity of life like signing off on a state-sponsored murder.<\/li><li>The vice-chair at the Fed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/04\/business\/elizabeth-warren-fed-insider-trading.html\">shifted his portfolio towards stock ahead of a big announcement<\/a> last year, as did two other Fed officials, which should make you ask why people in those positions are allowed to trade in equities at all.<\/li><li>The &#8220;Evolved Apes&#8221; NFTs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/y3dyem\/investors-spent-millions-on-evolved-apes-nfts-then-they-got-scammed?\">turned out to be a scam<\/a>. Color me shocked that a new, unregulated market is rife with fraud and con artists.<\/li><li>The Biden Administration says they want science advisers, but they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/09\/27\/the-biden-administration-wants-scientific-advisers-it-just-doesnt-like-what-they-have-to-say\/\">haven&#8217;t been listening to them<\/a> when it comes to policy choices.<\/li><li>I know very, very little about this topic, but thought this piece from Matt Yglesias on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slowboring.com\/p\/progressives-mobilization-delusion\">the &#8220;mobilization delusion&#8221; of progressives<\/a> was well argued.<\/li><li>Literary Hub has a piece on how Rush&#8217;s lyricist\/drummer Neil Peart helped lure young listeners <a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/how-an-iconic-canadian-rock-band-lured-angry-teens-to-the-dark-arts-of-ayn-rand\/\">over to the &#8220;dark side&#8221; of Ayn Rand<\/a>, the terrible novelist.<\/li><li>Board game news: Asmodee imprint Space Cowboys announced a new edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.asmodee.com\/jamaica-jca03\">the out-of-print game Jamaica<\/a>, a popular family game<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/mccaskellgames\/mythwind?\">The Kickstarter for Mythwind<\/a>, a cooperative, asymmetrical game, is over $666,000 as I type this, and keeps going up, with 21 days to go.<\/li><li>Board &amp; Dice announced <a href=\"https:\/\/boardanddice.com\/our-games\/tabannusi-builders-of-ur\/\">Tabannusi: Builders of Ur<\/a>, a heavy worker placement game co-designed by Daniele Tascini (Tzolk&#8217;in, Teotihuacan).<\/li><li>The Kickstarter for North Star Games&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northstargames.com\/pages\/paint-the-roses\">new <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>-themed game Paint the Roses<\/a> will open up on October 12<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My only content for subscribers to The Athletic this week was my contribution to our playoff predictions, where I pointed out that the evidence says playoff predictions by humans are probably no better those by than a dart-throwing monkey.
