My employer is mentioned in passing.<\/li><li>In the <em>New Yorker<\/em>, Jane Mayer reveals all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/08\/09\/the-big-money-behind-the-big-lie\">the giant dark money groups funding the Big Lie<\/a>, including the archconservative Bradley Foundation.<\/li><li>People who argue in bad faith that the vaccine isn&#8217;t FDA-approved are also ignoring that the FDA itself is no guarantee of anything, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/heartware-patients-implanted-fda\">they ignored years of evidence<\/a> that HeartWare heart pumps were prone to serious defects and allowed the company to continue selling them.<\/li><li>The unvaccinated are not a single, homogenous group that refuses to get the shot because they&#8217;re ignorant, selfish, or dumb. (Some of them are, certainly.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/06\/opinion\/covid-delta-vaccines-unvaccinated.html\">Many lack easy access to the vaccine<\/a>, even now, seven months after the first approvals.<\/li><li>There&#8217;s a lot of conflicting information about the COVID-19 vaccines and the Delta variant. One new study from the UK showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/vaccinated-people-three-times-less-likely-to-contract-d-1847421056\">vaccinated people were only 1\/3 as likely<\/a> to contract the Delta variant as unvaccinated people \u2013 including asymptomatic infections.<\/li><li>North Carolina&#8217;s legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/article253153718.html\">doesn&#8217;t want to vote to end child marriage<\/a> because too many legislators themselves married as minors or married spouses who were minors. Is that &#8220;Dueling Banjos&#8221; I hear in the background?<\/li><li>This <em>New York Times<\/em> Wirecutter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/wirecutter\/guides\/how-to-clean-grill\/\">guide to cleaning your grill<\/a> is very thorough and useful. It could even save you from a preventable grease fire.<\/li><li>Phoenix Union High School District is <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/phoenix-union-high-schools-tells-students-mask-arizonas\/story?id=79314299\">mandating masks for students<\/a>, flouting the fucking moronic state law banning mask mandates. How Republicans can preach a belief in local government and self-determination while passing state laws that tell cities, counties, and school districts what they can&#8217;t do just breaks my brain.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, several attorneys and parents in Florida are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/regional\/florida\/florida-desantis-lawsuit-mask-mandates\/67-e7aea27e-c0a9-4005-9f50-58f785366e67\">suing their wingnut governor<\/a> over that state&#8217;s ban on mask mandates.<\/li><li>QAnon supporters are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/qanons-new-plan-run-school-board-rcna1352\">running for school boards<\/a> across the country while trying to shed the label associated with that batshit conspiracy theory.<\/li><li>Twitter is taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-58065463\">more steps to try to fight disinformation<\/a> by working with Reuters and the AP, although the best thing they could do is ban the biggest spreaders of disinformation, like RFK Jr.<\/li><li>A writer for TripOut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripout.online\/feast\/olivegarden\">took two Italians to an Olive Garden.<\/a> Hilarity ensued, sort of.<\/li><li>The climate change news is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/08\/06\/climate-news-un-ipcc\/\">about to get a whole lot worse<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/aug\/06\/lotion-in-the-ocean-is-your-sunscreen-killing-the-sea\">Your sunscreen might be killing coral reefs<\/a> and other marine life, and &#8220;reef safe&#8221; lotions are not verified as actually safe for the ocean&#8217;s ecosystem by anybody. Of course, climate change may kill all the coral off first.<\/li><li>Nancy Pelosi flipped her view on student debt cancellation, opposing it in public, <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/08\/05\/student-debt-cancellation-nancy-pelosi\/\">to cater to two of her biggest donors<\/a>. The Swigs didn&#8217;t even learn about the student debt crisis until 2018, according to this piece in the <em>Intercept<\/em>, but that didn&#8217;t stop them from throwing their weight around here.<\/li><li>Journalists need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/media\/journalist-both-sides-politics-trump\/2021\/07\/27\/c3afd1f8-eee0-11eb-81d2-ffae0f931b8f_story.html\">stop covering anti-democracy efforts<\/a> as if they were politics as usual. Call voter-suppression efforts, bogus claims of voter fraud, and the like for what they are.<\/li><li>If you subscribe to the <em>Washingtonian<\/em>, well, its CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/washingtonian-magazine-runs-anti-union-campaign-as-staffers-vote-in-election_n_6106e7cbe4b0fd216c26d37b\">has gone all out to fight a unionization effort at the magazine<\/a>. Maybe let them know how you feel about that.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/rugby-union\/58108957\">Former Welsh rugby star Terry Davies<\/a>, who also happened to be my mother-in-law&#8217;s cousin, died this week at age 88.<\/li><li>Board game news: We have some fresh Kickstarters up, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/peterchayward\/cartouche\">Cartouche, a light tile-laying game<\/a> with an ancient Egyptian theme.<\/li><li>Then there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/pineonegames\/mixology\">Mixology, a cocktail-themed game<\/a> from a publisher based in Bangkok.<\/li><li>I was going to highlight the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/boardnight\/henrys-feast\/posts\/3265771\">Kickstarter for Henry&#8217;s Feast<\/a>, a game based around building a menu of Indian cuisine designed by people of Indian descent, and with an emphasis on the vegetarian dishes of the subcontinent \u2026 but the organizers cancelled the Kickstarter before I could share the link here.
