Also, my second book <em>The Inside Game<\/em> is out in paperback and <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942739\">available from bookshop.org<\/a> or wherever you buy books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: Olympian Emily Infeld&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/story\/_\/id\/31817769\/olympic-runner-emily-infeld-harrowing-three-year-ordeal-stalker\">three-year nightmare with a stalker<\/a> highlights just how poorly our society handles this kind of threat.<\/li><li>An anti-trans Instagram account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jul\/28\/anti-trans-video-los-angeles-protest-wi-spa?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">posted a fabricated story about a spa<\/a> in Los Angeles, leading to weeks of death threats and real violence.<\/li><li>Ed Yong detailed the incredible results of an experiment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2021\/06\/dengue-mosquitoes-defanged\/619161\/\">to make mosquitoes immune to the dengue virus<\/a> by using the <em>Wolbachia<\/em> bacterium.<\/li><li>The critical race theory non-troversy has caused a huge schism in a Michigan town where high school students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/mock-slave-trade-critical-race-theory\/2021\/07\/23\/b4372c36-e9a8-11eb-ba5d-55d3b5ffcaf1_story.html\">conducted a &#8220;slave auction&#8221; of their Black classmates<\/a>.<\/li><li>The preprint that COVID deniers like to tout that claims that ivermectin is effective against the virus? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2021\/jul\/16\/huge-study-supporting-ivermectin-as-covid-treatment-withdrawn-over-ethical-concerns?fbclid=IwAR1Tuk7mKGi_lgB-9apiNgueb4tsA4XqEFyfK4WhhdwbY5POsbUbjOPfExY&amp;utm_source=pocket_mylist\">It&#8217;s been withdrawn<\/a> due to a major data integrity issue.<\/li><li>The home of a fraudster who has been pushing a bleach &#8220;cure&#8221; for autism has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/z3xgm3\/bleach-peddler-kerri-rivera-appears-to-have-been-raided-by-german-police\">raided by German authorities<\/a>.<\/li><li>A marketing agency tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-trending-57928647\">pay YouTubers to spread anti-vaccine propaganda<\/a>, but the influencers wouldn&#8217;t play ball. No one knows who was actually behind the plot.<\/li><li>I know you&#8217;re shocked, but the Trump Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/trump-covid-pandemic-contracts\">handed out big federal contracts to its political allies<\/a> during the pandemic, often breaching the rules to do so.<\/li><li>The man who owned the @tennessee Twitter handle refused to sell it, so a 20-year-old who wanted the handle &#8216;swatted&#8217; the man, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/07\/24\/swatting-mark-herring-tennessee-twitter\/\">then had a fatal heart attack<\/a> during the incident.<\/li><li>A survivor of the Parkland high school shooting wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/epnq84\/im-a-parkland-shooting-survivor-qanon-convinced-my-dad-it-was-all-a-hoax?utm_source=vicenewstwitter\">how his own father thinks the massacre was a hoax<\/a>, thanks to the QAnon community.<\/li><li>A state inquiry ruled that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-58012903\">the Maltese government was responsible for the death of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia<\/a>, who exposed corruption in the island nation that went all the way up to the Prime Minister. Galizia was murdered in 2017 when someone set off a bomb in her car.<\/li><li>Why is the Biden Administration allowing a pilot program where federal prisoners would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/blog\/2021\/07\/29\/mailguard\/\">only receive scans of personal mail<\/a>, rather than the originals?
