I held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/3hJboPW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Klawchat<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: A new preprint <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/record\/5106841#.YPLtqehKhPY\" target=\"_blank\">on the origins of SARS-CoV-2<\/a> states that &#8220;there is substantial body of scientific evidence supporting a zoonotic origin for SARS-CoV-2&#8221; and &#8220;there is currently no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 has a laboratory origin.&#8221; This failed hypothesis isn&#8217;t just the province of the right-wing; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2021\/06\/inside-the-anti-gmo-movements-obsession-with-virology-research-and-lab-leaks\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">the anti-GMO movement<\/a> has also latched on to it.<\/li><li>A conservative activist <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/annals-of-inquiry\/how-a-conservative-activist-invented-the-conflict-over-critical-race-theory?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">invented the nontroversy over critical race theory<\/a>. If someone tells you CRT is bad, just ask them to name an author who&#8217;s written about it, or a book on the subject. Like this Alabama columnist did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2021\/06\/whitmire-alabama-lawmaker-wants-to-ban-critical-race-theory-so-i-asked-him-what-it-is.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist\">to a state lawmaker<\/a>.<\/li><li>This ran a few weeks ago, during my hiatus from these posts, but former sportswriter Kat O&#8217;Brien detailed how <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/20\/opinion\/baseball-sexual-abuse-harassment.html\" target=\"_blank\">she was raped by a major league ballplayer<\/a> while she was on the Rangers beat.<\/li><li>Influencers who peddle anti-vaccine misinformation are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org\/health\/coronavirus-and-inequality\/spreading-fears-cashing-in-anti-vaccine?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">raking in cash from their efforts<\/a>. It&#8217;s almost entirely a grift, with a societal cost measured in bodies.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2021\/07\/3-principles-now-define-pandemic\/619336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Delta variant&#8217;s threat<\/a> explained in three simple points by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ed Yong.<\/li><li>The &#8220;mystery Chinese seeds&#8221; that made the rounds of the news last summer? Probably just a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2021\/07\/unsolicited-seeds-china-brushing\/619417\/\" target=\"_blank\">brushing scam<\/a>.<\/li><li>Why don&#8217;t we have a vaccine against Lyme disease? <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2021\/07\/lyme-vaccine-history-lymerix-hesitancy-ticks.html\" target=\"_blank\">It&#8217;s complicated<\/a>. Anti-vaxxers, a dubious claim about side effects, and the regional nature of the disease all contributed.<\/li><li>A nurse in Louisiana who posted anti-vaccine views and misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines has, in fact, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/olivia-guidry\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">died of COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li><li>Poynter <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/educators-students\/2021\/unc-donor-says-he-has-no-regrets-about-his-role-in-the-journalism-school-losing-nikole-hannah-jones\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">spoke to Walter Hussman<\/a>, the conservative megadonor to UNC who led the school to deny Nikole Hannah-Jones tenure and ultimately cost them her services. He doesn&#8217;t think he did anything wrong, but also disputes some of the story that&#8217;s been publicly reported.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/mel-magazine-dollar-shave-club-recurrent-dc6d1893-3717-419f-a2f6-950458514446.html?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\"><em>MEL<\/em> magazine<\/a> is coming back. <\/li><li>A power plant in upstate New York is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/ncna1272938\" target=\"_blank\">primarily powering a bitcoin mining operation<\/a>, warming Seneca Lake and polluting the air (as well as contributing to climate change). I&#8217;m not sure what the solution is &#8211; taxing bitcoin is the most rational economic move, but tricky because of its nature &#8211; but cryptocurrencies are an environmental threat that demands some sort of government action.<\/li><li>Why did three people in different states contract the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/cdc-warns-doctors-about-a-mystery-bacterial-outbreak-wi-1847210820?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">often-fatal tropical bacterial disease melioidosis<\/a>?<\/li><li>The state of Alabama took a man&#8217;s gun after he shot his wife. Nine months later, they gave it back to him, despite a protection order, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/crime-courts\/state-alabama-took-his-gun-away-when-authorities-gave-it-n1269234?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\">he used it to kill her<\/a>. I&#8217;m sure the fact that he was a cop had nothing to do with this.<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2021\/jul\/09\/why-do-so-few-men-read-books-by-women\" target=\"_blank\">Men read far fewer books by women<\/a> than women do.
