If you want to grow the economy, you need affordable child care.<\/li><li>The CDC&#8217;s statistic that &#8220;less than 10 percent&#8221; of COVID-19 transmission occurred outdoors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/11\/briefing\/outdoor-covid-transmission-cdc-number.html?referringSource=articleShare\">is probably wildly misleading<\/a>. My daughter got her first dose less than 24 hours after the approval came through. Her only complaint afterwards was two days of a sore shoulder. Go get your kids the shot.<\/li><li>Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/briefs\/facebook-deplatforms-ohio-based-anti-vaccine-group\/\">deplatformed an Ohio-based anti-vaccine group<\/a>, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/m7evpn\/bill-gates-anti-vax-covid-lies-facebook-banned\">did the same to Erin Elizabeth<\/a>, a major anti-vaccine wacko who is partners with longtime quack Joseph Mercola.<\/li><li>Activists opposed to syringe exchanges are just bizarre, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/05\/06\/years-ago-a-syringe-exchange-helped-end-a-devastating-hiv-outbreak-now-it-might-be-forced-to-close\/\">their work may lead a major success story in Indiana<\/a>, which helped end an HIV outbreak, to close.<\/li><li>If the West Antarctic Ice Shelf collapses, the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/04\/study-says-antarctic-ice-sheet-melt-to-lift-sea-level-higher-than-thought\/\">rise in sea levels will be 30% higher than originally thought<\/a>.<\/li><li>The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2021\/04\/proctoring-tools-and-dragnet-investigations-rob-students-due-process\">may be misusing data from students&#8217; electronic devices<\/a> to accuse those students of cheating.<\/li><li>Frank Abagnale authored a best-selling memoir that became the movie <em>Catch Me If You Can<\/em>. It turns out that <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/segments\/the-greatest-hoax-on-earth\/\">his story is probably a big hoax<\/a>.<\/li><li>The cicadas are coming, so of course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/eating-cicadas-brood-x\/#intcid=_wired-category-right-rail_abb5f71e-8328-40fd-8472-d98137fed97a_popular4-1\">some folks suggest eating them<\/a>.<\/li><li>Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron&#8217;s defence against a charge of improper lobbying is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/may\/14\/cameron-job-office-greensill-scandal-spellchecker\">he was undone by autocorrect<\/a>. The lede here is spectacular.<\/li><li>Bari Weiss really took off her mask in a substack post that <a href=\"https:\/\/discourseblog.com\/bari-weiss-gaza-children-zionism\/\">justified the killing of Palestinian children<\/a>.<\/li><li>Two good op eds from the <em>Washington Post<\/em> this week on our current quaqmire: how two men named Joe (Biden &amp; Manchin) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/05\/16\/democracy-depends-two-guys-named-joe\/\">hold the future of our democracy in their hands<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/05\/14\/why-personality-cults-democracy-dont-mix\/\">why democracy and cults of personality don&#8217;t mix<\/a>.<\/li><li>I know Jonathan Chait&#8217;s reputation is \u2026 not great, perhaps, but I agree with him on the subject of Rep. Liz Cheney. She can be wrong on many issues, but <a href=\"she%20is%20right%20on%20Trumpism%20and%20the%20direction%20of%20the\">she is right on Trumpism and the direction of the GOP<\/a>, and we can acknowledge or even praise the latter without somehow tacitly supporting the former.<\/li><li>The bloated U.S. military budget isn&#8217;t just wasteful \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/ideas\/2021\/04\/bloated-pentagon-budget-isnt-just-wasteful-its-racist\/173547\/\">its consequences disproportionately harm people of color<\/a>.<\/li><li>Board game news: Board &amp; Dice, publisher of some of really heavy Euro titles like Teotihuacan and Tekhenu, explained <a href=\"https:\/\/boardanddice.com\/news\/update-on-the-situation-with-daniele-tascini\/\">how and under what terms they&#8217;re continuing their relationship<\/a> with designer Daniele Tascini, who made some insensitive comments on race last year.
