A court ruled they <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2021\/05\/05\/qualified-immunity-police-coerced-confession-art-tobias-los-angeles-9th-circuit\/\">get qualified immunity on some of the potential charges<\/a> against them, because they didn&#8217;t coerce him for a long enough period of time. What if \u2013 stay with me here \u2013 we just ended qualified immunity for cops?<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/05\/04\/eyes-of-texas-ut-austin\/\">The controversy over the University of Texas&#8217; racist fight song continues<\/a>, as a perfectly normal person brought a gun to a Zoom discussion on the topic. I assume he shot his computer to own the libs.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/bitterly-divided-election-southlake-texas-opponents-anti-racism-education-win-n1266102?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma\">Anti-diversity activists won big in a school board election<\/a> outside Dallas, because, you know, Texas has no history of racism you might want to teach to schoolchildren.<\/li><li>Teachers in Rockwood, Missouri, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/education\/rockwood-teachers-call-for-protection-from-harassment-over-diversity-curriculum\/article_919a8228-3696-5714-aa27-0f1813e0e150.html\">are now facing threats and harassment over that school district&#8217;s diversity curriculum<\/a>. In a state where you stand on your porch with semi-automatic weapons to face peaceful protesters, this fits.<\/li><li>An Idaho legislative intern alleges her boss, Aaron von Ehlinger (who has since resigned in disgrace), raped her, and in return, several other members of the Idaho legislature \u2013 all Republicans \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/idaho-ade08d8d48b315a3eb3deaff302c1bb4\">doxxed her, harassed her, and tried to get her charged with filing a false report<\/a>. Two of those other legislators are women.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/04\/30\/require-covid-vaccine-resume-normal-life-herd-immunity-column\/4886673001\/?fbclid=IwAR2JjSh7vHs3qBgR_zwgV-uOrLcFmHmyDYye6oVmzLcmg8_w6f79vB8vUU0\">It&#8217;s time to start shunning the vaccine hesitant<\/a>, says <em>USA Today<\/em> editorial writer and former federal prosecutor Michael Stern.<\/li><li>Centner Academy, a private primary school in Miami, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/02\/us\/miami-centner-academy-coronavirus-vaccine.html\">become a &#8220;beacon&#8221; for anti-vaxxers<\/a>, as the school is turning away vaccinated students and staff because of the bogus idea that they can &#8220;shed&#8221; the virus. (The vaccine does not contain the live SARS-CoV-2 virus, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedmedicine.org\/covid-19-vaccine-shedding-nonsense\/\">thus vaccinated people have nothing to &#8220;shed.&#8221;<\/a> This is sheer ignorance.) Linda Centner, who founded and runs the school, has espoused all sorts of anti-science conspiracy theories, including anti-mask views and baseless fears of 5G cell towers.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, one former anti-vaccine influencer in Texas got her COVID-19 shot and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/news-politics\/anti-vax-influencer-covid-19-vaccine-hesitancy\/\">is talking about it publicly<\/a>.<\/li><li>Is some anti-vaccine loon in your life claiming there are hundreds of reports of adverse reactions to the COVID-19 jab? Well, here&#8217;s a thread explaining why those reports, from VAERS, <a href=\"https:\/\/threader.app\/thread\/1390361760306241540\">don&#8217;t actually mean any of these reactions were to the vaccines<\/a> \u2013 if they happened at all.<\/li><li>Is there some hope on the horizon for a vaccine against HIV? It&#8217;s still a ways off, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/the-four-decade-quest-for-an-hiv-vaccine-yields-new-hope\">a new breakthrough<\/a> at least means there&#8217;s the possibility of such an inoculation, although retroviruses are extremely difficult to treat with antivirals or prevent via vaccines.<\/li><li>Regardless of your opinion of the filibuster, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/why-democrats-cant-get-what-they-want\/\">not the thing preventing Democrats from enacting major legislation<\/a> right now.<\/li><li>Speaking of which, President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/may\/03\/biden-paid-family-leave-plan\">wants to create a family leave plan<\/a> that would put the U.S. in line with other developed nations. We are far worse off than our peers in Europe and parts of eastern Asia when it comes to quality-of-life laws.<\/li><li>Hold your surprise, but white authorities in Arkansas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/07\/us\/ledell-lee-dna-testing-arkansas.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\">executed a Black man who may very well have been innocent<\/a>. The death penalty is barbaric and should be abolished everywhere.<\/li><li>A Black homeowner in Indianapolis found the appraisal of her house went up for $100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/news\/indianapolis-homeowner-files-discrimination-complaint-after-removal-of-black-identifiers-leads-to-100000-appraisal-increase\/\">when she removed items that might have hinted at her race<\/a>, and had a white friend pose as the homeowner.<\/li><li>An Israeli man visiting relatives in Baltimore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/article\/ephraim-gordan-fatally-shot-while-visiting-family-northwest-baltimore\/36321823\">was shot and killed<\/a>, possibly because he was Jewish.<\/li><li>Eleven Madison Park, one of the most acclaimed (and expensive) restaurants in the world, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/eleven-madison-park-menu-vegan-meat-free-11620043140\">reopen with a completely plant-based menu<\/a>, at $335 a person.<\/li><li>Signal tried to place ads on Instagram showing just how much the social-media site (owned by Facebook) knows about you, but <a href=\"https:\/\/signal.org\/blog\/the-instagram-ads-you-will-never-see\/\">Instagram banned the ads instead<\/a>.<\/li><li>This BBC story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-56842506\">a stranded sailor who couldn&#8217;t leave his ship for four years<\/a> is fascinating and a little horrifying.<\/li><li>Stars, they&#8217;re just like us! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/kate-winslet-wawa_n_609454b6e4b0123515feb0fa\">Kate Winslet loves Wawa<\/a>.
