I also did a <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2071972\/2020\/09\/17\/qa-whats-feel-on-royals-farm-system-during-lost-season\/?source=emp_shared_article\">Q&amp;A with our Royals writer Alec Lewis<\/a> and answered some questions for <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2071907\/2020\/09\/17\/a-closer-look-at-the-nationals-debuts-minor-league-system-and-future\/\">our Nats writer Britt Ghiroli<\/a> on each of those teams&#8217; farm systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My guest on The Keith Law Show this week was <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/podcast\/168-the-keith-law-show\/?episode=31\">my friend and former colleague Adnan Virk<\/a>, talking about the season to date and some upcoming movies of interest to him (he hosts his own movie podcast called <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/cinephile-with-adnan-virk\/id1117459728\">Cinephile<\/a>). My books <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942722\">The Inside Game<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2EfiwT9\">Smart Baseball<\/a><\/em> make excellent gifts, or so I&#8217;m told by my editor and publicists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: The most likely way to get infected with COVID-19 is <a href=\"https:\/\/elemental.medium.com\/the-most-likely-way-youll-get-infected-with-covid-19-30430384e5a5\">coming into airborne droplets that contain the virus<\/a> \u2013 that is, breathing in what infected people breathed out. All of your Lysol wipes and closing schools\/workplaces for &#8220;deep cleaning&#8221; is hygiene theater: You get COVID-19 from being in an enclosed space with someone who has it and isn&#8217;t wearing a mask.<\/li><li>The <em>New York Times<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/16\/magazine\/ed-buck-case.html\">the strange case of Ed Buck<\/a>, who appears to have killed multiple gay Black men by overdosing them with meth. Buck pitched himself as a major Democratic donor in southern California, but the evidence is that he talked a big game but really wasn&#8217;t a big deal.<\/li><li>NPR exposes how &#8220;Big Oil&#8221; sold U.S. consumers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/11\/897692090\/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled\">the lie that plastics would be recycled<\/a>.<\/li><li>This <em>Washington Post<\/em> story highlights the dangers of medical misinformation by showing how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2020\/08\/31\/covid-19-vaccine-conspiracy-theories-public-support\/?arc404=true\">one 26-year-old film editor fell prey to online conspiracy theories<\/a> about COVID-19, masks, and vaccines. By the end of the story, he&#8217;s gone completely off the rails.<\/li><li>A former Facebook data scientist alleges that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/craigsilverman\/facebook-ignore-political-manipulation-whistleblower-memo\">the company has ignored blatant manipulation by autocratic governments or other political parties<\/a>, including those in Honduras, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine, and says she was fired for spending time on these matters.<\/li><li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/scientific-american-endorses-joe-biden\/\">Scientific American<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/scientific-american-endorses-joe-biden\/\"> has endorsed Joe Biden for President<\/a>, the first time in the publication&#8217;s 175-year history that it has endorsed a Presidential candidate.<\/li><li>A second <em>Washington Post<\/em> story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/us-policy\/2020\/09\/17\/usps-trump-coronavirus-amazon-foia\/\">highlights the battles over the US Postal Service<\/a> and how the Trump Administration scotched a plan to distribute hundreds of millions of masks to Americans.<\/li><li>Dividing athletes into male and female groups requires imposing a clear binary on a messy reality. So says David Epstein, writing for <em>Slate<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2020\/09\/caster-semenya-ruling-testosterone-in-sports.html\">the decision to ban Castor Semenya from women&#8217;s track<\/a> unless she agrees to suppress her natural testosterone production. Vonnegut called this one in &#8220;Harrison Bergeron.&#8221;<\/li><li>Shere Hite, a pioneering sex researcher who first rose to prominence with her 1976 book <em>The Hite Report<\/em>, which discussed female sexuality and sexual experiences, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-54120483\">died earlier this month at 77<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/sep\/17\/donald-trump-accused-of-sexual-assault-by-former-model-amy-dorris\">Another woman has accused Donald Trump of sexual assault<\/a> and his adherents do not care\u2026<\/li><li>\u2026because so many of them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/17\/913589176\/the-complicated-importance-of-abortion-to-trump-voters\">care only about ending a woman&#8217;s right to choose<\/a>.<\/li><li>The group &#8220;Democrat Voters Against Joe Biden&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/democrat-voters-against-joe-biden-group-has-trump-fanatics-a-psychic-but-no-actual-dems?ref=wrap\">doesn&#8217;t have any actual Democrats in it<\/a>.<\/li><li>Meanwhile, Turning Point USA, a pro-Trump cult led by Charlie Kirk, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/turning-point-teens-disinformation-trump\/2020\/09\/15\/c84091ae-f20a-11ea-b796-2dd09962649c_story.html\">paying teenagers to tweet disinformation on COVID-19 and mail-in voting<\/a> or post similar information on Facebook. I&#8217;m not clear why those sites haven&#8217;t banned Kirk and TPUSA for running de facto troll farms.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/wisconsin-court-voter-suppression\/\">Trump&#8217;s legal strategy to suppress the vote<\/a> is continuing apace in Wisconsin and other swing states, right in plain sight of everyone who should care.<\/li><li>A nurse who worked at an ICE detention center alleged that women held prisoner there were being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-54160638\">given hysterectomies without their consent<\/a>. Some women who were in that camp have alleged that the nurse was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2020\/09\/10032900\/dawn-wooten-ice-whistleblower-accusations-prism\">complicit in those forced sterilizations<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/09\/4-degrees-celsius-election\/616393\/\">Climate change is killing Americans and destroying our physical infrastructure<\/a>, but the Republican Party says we can&#8217;t afford to try to stop it.<\/li><li>The UK government&#8217;s chief scientific advisor revealed that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-54150538\">strongly rebuked for arguing for a stricter lockdown earlier this year<\/a>.<\/li><li>This <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em> editorial advises us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp2025331?query=featured_coronavirus\">how to build trust in an eventual COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>. Hint: It&#8217;s not by promising one will be out before the election.<\/li><li>Two more white women revealed (or were exposed) in the last week that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2020\/09\/18\/indianapolis-activist-satchuel-cole-lied-being-black\/3486542001\/\">they&#8217;ve been posing as Black<\/a>. I feel like this is a bigger problem than the salacious coverage implies \u2013 this isn&#8217;t just a scandal, but it&#8217;s a serious case of fraud, as these women all have taken jobs or academic positions that should have gone to Black women, and thus probably slowed or derailed other women&#8217;s careers as a result of their fraud. The news coverage focuses more on the scandalous part, which leads to pointless claims about &#8220;racial dysphoria&#8221; or other nonsense, when these women are just frauds.<\/li><li>My friend and colleague Lindsay Adler wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2058661\/2020\/09\/10\/adler-prescotts-openness-helps-chip-away-depression-stigma-for-people-like-me\/\">Dak Prescott and her own experiences with depression<\/a> (for subscribers to the Athletic).<\/li><li>The NYC bookstore Kitchen Arts &amp; Letters, which sells books about cooking, food, and drink, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/keep-kitchen-arts-open\">has a GoFundMe up<\/a> to try to help them survive the pandemic&#8217;s drastic effects on their business.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/xg8jq4\/spotify-joe-rogan-transphobic\">There&#8217;s a fight going on within Spotify<\/a> over the company&#8217;s new, exclusive deal with Joe Rogan, because of many transphobic comments he&#8217;s made over the years, and appearances by guests who engage in transgender denialism.<\/li><li>Board game news: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/renegadegamestudios\/embarcadero\">Embarcadero<\/a>, a 2021 game co-designed by the designer of Scoville, is on Kickstarter and already well past its modest funding goal.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/store.us.asmodee.com\/catalogue\/infinity-gauntlet-a-love-letter-game_2694\/?linkId=99785553\">Infinity Gauntlet<\/a>, a new variation of the fast-playing deduction game Love Letter, is now out from Asmodee.<\/li><li>Dire Wolf announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.direwolfdigital.com\/dune-imperium\/\">the forthcoming game Dune: Imperium<\/a>, an officially licensed property with art from the new movie version of Frank Herbert&#8217;s novel.<\/li><li>This about sums things up for 2020. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We should probably call it a night <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YJbU1QGJpn\">pic.twitter.com\/YJbU1QGJpn<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Oatmeal (@Oatmeal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Oatmeal\/status\/1299788079155179520?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 29, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had one post of my own this week for subscribers to The Athletic, on my disdain for MLB&#8217;s proposal to keep expanded playoffs beyond 2020.
