I also appeared on Blue Jays broadcaster Dan Shulman&#8217;s podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/podcast.sportsnet.ca\/a-swing-and-a-belt-with-dan-shulman\/the-prospects-for-baseballs-prospects\/\">Swingand a Belt<\/a>, talking about what this lost minor league season means for prospects and the teams that employ them; and on the U.S. Army&#8217;s Mad Scientist program podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/madsciblog.tradoc.army.mil\/262-the-convergence-bias-behavior-and-baseball-with-keith-law\/?doing_wp_cron=1598107971.7159810066223144531250\">The Convergence<\/a>, talking about my new book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942722\">The Inside Game<\/a><\/em>, and what might help people become better analysts in a world awash in data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <em>Paste<\/em>, I previewed many of <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/31637Ny\">the major board game titles due out for the rest of 2020<\/a>, including the follow-up to Wingspan from Elizabeth Hargrave and a new game inspired by New Jersey&#8217;s infamous Action Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">My free email newsletter<\/a> returned this week, with thoughts on just how exhausting this science-denying, homophobic slur-using world has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: One reason why many of us feel so awful is that <a href=\"https:\/\/elemental.medium.com\/your-surge-capacity-is-depleted-it-s-why-you-feel-awful-de285d542f4c\">our cognitive &#8216;surge capacity&#8217; is depleted<\/a>, writes science journalist Tara Haelle, who provides suggestions to help us rebuild it.<\/li><li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/magazine\/2020\/08\/21\/how-tim-scott-only-black-gop-senator-navigates-loyalty-trump-vs-calling-him-out\/\">profiles Tim Scott<\/a>, the only Black Republican in the Senate, although in some ways I think it still let him off the hook for his decision to support a party and President that have both acted strongly against racial equality and justice in the last four years.<\/li><li>One reason so many people still fail to understand the seriousness of the pandemic&#8217;s spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20200812-exponential-growth-bias-the-numerical-error-behind-covid-19\">is exponential growth bias<\/a>, where we have a hard time intuitively understanding how that&nbsp; mathematical function works.<\/li><li>COVID deniers love to point to Sweden as a success story, since the country didn&#8217;t lock down yet seemed to have the pandemic under control. Sweden just reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/sweden-which-didnt-lock-down-has-worst-death-toll-since-1869-first-half-2020-1526397\">its highest death toll for the first six months of a year since 1869<\/a>. Their case fatality rate is also double that of neighboring Norway.<\/li><li>The rush to reopen bars and restaurants is a major reason why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/12\/health\/Covid-restaurants-bars.html\">we can&#8217;t get this pandemic under control<\/a>.<\/li><li>The CDC said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/08\/21\/cdc-says-us-could-control-coronavirus-in-12-weeks-if-most-americans-wear-masks-social-distance.html?__source=twitter%7Cmain\">we could likely control it in 12 weeks<\/a> if most Americans wore masks and adhered to physical distancing guidelines.<\/li><li>Dr. Jen Gunter wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/18\/style\/wap-cardi-b.html?smid=tw-share\">in praise of &#8220;WAP&#8221;<\/a> while criticizing longstanding, misogynistic taboos on the subjects of female sexuality and, er, natural lubrication.<\/li><li>Writing for <em>Slate<\/em>, Ray Suarez says that <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2020\/08\/nra-new-york-attorney-general-lawsuit-dissolve.html\">the NRA might not survive the New York state&#8217;s lawsuit to dissolve it<\/a>. We should only be so lucky, after the NRA was a major reason the Violence Against Women Act was allowed to lapse in 2019.<\/li><li>Rush Limbaugh&#8217;s descent continued this week as he mocked Joe Biden for having lost multiple family members to tragic, early deaths, and <a href=\"https:\/\/m.dailykos.com\/stories\/2020\/8\/16\/1969528\/-Limbaugh-calls-Sen-Harris-a-ho-1000s-of-advertisers-and-100-pro-teams-and-universities-endorse-it\">then referred to Kamala Harris as a &#8216;ho&#8217;<\/a> and claimed she slept her way to various political offices.<\/li><li>The <em>Atlantic<\/em>&#8216;s John Hendrickson looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/08\/braydens-stutter-dnc\/615541\/\">how 13-year-old Brayden delivered the best speech<\/a> of this week&#8217;s Democratic National Convention. You can see the video of when <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYinLA2121\/status\/1296844524682018817\">Brayden first met Joe Biden<\/a>, and how Biden encouraged Brayden not to let his stutter define or limit him.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/19\/health\/gmo-mosquitoes-approved-florida-scn-wellness\/index.html\">A pilot project to release genetically modified mosquitoes<\/a> that produce female eggs that die as larvae in the Florida Keys has received final approval.
