I held <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAthleticMLB\/status\/1286376458211008512\">a live Zoom Q&amp;A<\/a> via The Athletic&#8217;s Twitter account on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <em>Paste<\/em>, I reviewed the new <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2BkFPJN\">flick-and-write game Sonora<\/a>, where players flick discs on to the same board, possibly knocking each others&#8217; discs out of the way, and score on their personal scoresheets based on where the discs end up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My book, <em>The Inside Game: Bad Calls, Strange Moves, and What Baseball Behavior Teaches Us About Ourselves<\/em>, is out now. I&#8217;ll also resume <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">my email newsletter<\/a> this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: GEN looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/gen.medium.com\/these-evangelical-women-are-abandoning-trump-and-the-church-ee8899837fe\">evangelical women who&#8217;ve left their churches and the Republican Party<\/a> because they couldn&#8217;t reconcile Christian support for Trump with the ostensible tenets of the religion.<\/li><li>The <em>New Yorker<\/em>&#8216;s Isaac Chotiner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/q-and-a\/thomas-chatterton-williams-on-race-identity-and-cancel-culture\">interviewed Thomas Chatterson Williams<\/a>, one of the authors of the Harper&#8217;s letter decrying &#8216;cancel culture&#8217; on the left; it&#8217;s an informative conversation, made better because Chotiner is unafraid to challenge Williams&#8217; inaccuracies and to correct others in the final text.<\/li><li>The <em>Jackson Free Press<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonfreepress.com\/news\/2020\/jul\/22\/lonely-farewells-front-line-coronavirus\/\">spoke to doctors and nurses at the University of Mississippi Medical Center&#8217;s dedicated COVID-19 ICU<\/a> about how overloaded they are and how sick the victims become. The executive vice chair of emergency medicine, begging people to wear masks and keep distancing, says, &#8220;Please don&#8217;t make this worse.&#8221;<\/li><li>A SPLC Hatewatch investigation found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/hatewatch\/2020\/07\/22\/oanns-posobiec-met-polish-neo-fascists-and-amplified-their-messages-online\">OANN employee Jack Posobiec went to Poland to meet with a Polish neo-Nazi party<\/a>, promoting their messages through his popular Twitter account.<\/li><li>Customs and Border Protection is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/society\/cbp-deployment-harris\/\">involved in far more cities than just Portland<\/a>, and they&#8217;re not being transparent about their activities.<\/li><li>Florida&#8217;s former top coronavirus data scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/news\/20200717\/ousted-florida-scientist-rebekah-jones-whistleblower-complaint-takes-aim-at-gov-ron-desantis\">claims she was fired for refusing to manipulate data<\/a> to make the pandemic there appear less serious than it actually was.<\/li><li><em>WIRED<\/em> looks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-tricky-math-of-herd-immunity-for-covid-19\/\">difficulty of calculating herd immunity requirements<\/a> for COVID-19; the quick summary is that we need a vaccine to get there.<\/li><li>A group of over 100 scientists called for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/20\/opinion\/coronavirus-preprints.html?smid=tw-share\">a rapid review system for research preprints<\/a> so papers like the Stanford one that used highly questionable methods to claim that the rate of COVID-19 infection was 50 times higher in California than widely accepted don&#8217;t get widely reported before they&#8217;re further vetted.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/news-politics\/a33379355\/parenting-coronavirus-lying-to-kids\/\">To be a parent right now is to be a liar<\/a>, writes Dan Sinker for <em>Esquire<\/em>.<\/li><li>Dave Grohl \u2013 yep, that one \u2013 wrote an op ed in the <em>Atlantic<\/em> in defense of teachers, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2020\/07\/dave-grohl-pandemic-reopening-schools-health-teachers\/614422\/\">we need better plans before we reopen schools<\/a>.<\/li><li>Why have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/19\/health\/coronavirus-premature-birth.html\">rates of premature births gone way down<\/a> in some areas during the pandemic?<\/li><li>Here&#8217;s a list of all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/qanon-conspiracy-theory\/here-are-qanon-supporters-running-congress-2020\">known QAnon supporters running for Congress<\/a> this year, or who tried to run; fourteen have already secured spots on November ballots. Sixty-two of the 67 are Republicans. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/twitter-bans-7-000-qanon-accounts-limits-150-000-others-n1234541\">Twitter has at least begun to ban or limit accounts<\/a> promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory, on the grounds that the &#8216;movement&#8217; is associated with increasing violence. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/twitter-cracks-down-qanon-policy\/\">Facebook needs to do the same<\/a>.<\/li><li>Over 280 <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> employees signed a letter to the paper&#8217;s new publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/280-wall-street-journal-journalists-sign-letter-blasting-opinion-section-for-lack-of-fact-checking-and-disregard-for-evidence\/\">asking for a clearer distinction between the news and opinion sections<\/a>, something the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/wsj-journalists-ask-publisher-for-clearer-distinction-between-news-and-opinion-content-11595349198\">paper reported on itself<\/a> (subscription required).<\/li><li>A Philadelphia attorney who makes her living evicting people on behalf of city courts is <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philly-lawyer-collects-millions-evicting-people-for-city-courts-shes-married-to-an-eviction-judge\/\">married to a city eviction judge<\/a> who doesn&#8217;t recuse himself from cases involving her.<\/li><li><em>Quanta<\/em> has a pretty good, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/how-godels-incompleteness-theorems-work-20200714\/\">concise explanation of G\u00f6del&#8217;s incompleteness theorems<\/a>.<\/li><li>Board game news: Renegade Game Studios announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renegadegamestudios.com\/news\/2020\/7\/22\/kids-on-brooms-rpg-releases-today?mc_cid=f87db37dd7&amp;mc_eid=374d8f1815\">release of a new RPG, Kids on Brooms<\/a>, that is itself a spinoff of the game Kids on Bikes.<\/li><li>Capstone announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/capstone-games.com\/board-games\/renature\/\">late 2020 release of Renature<\/a>, from designers Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer, which I assume is a sequel to their 2017 game Reworld.
