I also joined <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/1914754\/2020\/07\/09\/how-a-sports-book-gets-made-authors-from-the-athletic-break-down-the-process\/\">the site&#8217;s Authors Roundtable<\/a>, answering some questions on the book-writing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over at <em>Paste<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/board-games\/floor-plan-board-game-review\/\">I reviewed Floor Plan<\/a>, a new roll-and-write from Deep Water (publishers of Welcome To\u2026) that is quite easy to learn, but where the theme and the strategy don&#8217;t work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My second book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9780062942722\">The Inside Game<\/a><\/em>, is out now, and you can buy it on bookshop.org through that link, or find it at your local independent bookstore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Vulture<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/thandie-newton-in-conversation.html\">interview with Thandie Newton<\/a> is a must-read for her unbelievable candor, speaking about racism and sexism on set as well as some lousy experiences with Tom Cruise.<\/li><li>Patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19 and recover can face weeks or months of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/53193835\">delirium, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and physical and cognitive deficits<\/a>.<\/li><li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> looks at how the pandemic has made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/the-pandemic-didnt-create-working-moms-struggle-but-it-made-it-impossible-to-ignore\/2020\/07\/07\/bcc021c4-bbb8-11ea-bdaf-a129f921026f_story.html\">the struggle working moms face impossible for employers to ignore<\/a>, as we&#8217;ve seen with the recent backlash to bizarre decisions by Florida State and Georgia Tech.<\/li><li>The new invite-only audio app Clubhouse is paying a price for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/interface\/2020\/7\/8\/21316172\/clubhouse-content-moderation-taylor-lorenz-harassment-abuse\">omitting any protections for users against harassment<\/a>. Given what this Verge article says about the app I&#8217;d have zero interest in participating in it.<\/li><li>The <em>Paris Review<\/em> explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2020\/07\/07\/how-neapolitan-cuisine-took-over-the-world\/\">how Neapolitan cuisine became synonymous with Italian food<\/a>.<\/li><li>Human rights lawyer Derecka Purnell explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/07\/how-i-became-police-abolitionist\/613540\/\">why she became a police abolitionist<\/a>, the first of three links this week from the <em>Atlantic<\/em>. The crux of her argument is the lack of accountability for officers who commit violence against civilians.<\/li><li>Ed Yong continues his tremendous work for the <em>Atlantic<\/em> on the pandemic, writing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2020\/07\/pandemic-experts-are-not-okay\/613879\/\">how the experts trying to help hospitals and policymakers are getting burned out<\/a>, while the pandemic is exacerbating issues of gender equity in the field, and charlatans from outside of epidemiology are trying to make names for themselves with shoddy research.<\/li><li>Also in the <em>Atlantic<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/07\/why-covid-death-rate-down\/613945\/\">why death rates haven&#8217;t risen<\/a> even as cases and hospitalizations continue to rise. Hint: it&#8217;s not necessarily good news.<\/li><li>A new study published in <em>The Lancet<\/em> found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)31482-3\/fulltext\">antibody levels were extremely low<\/a> in populations in COVID-19 hotspots, meaning that herd immunity isn&#8217;t coming any time soon.<\/li><li>Axios explains how public health efforts have to step up their efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/coronavirus-misinformation-conspiracy-theories-ad2785eb-b5a2-4ea5-8158-729cb8879130.html\">combat COVID-19 misinformation<\/a>.<\/li><li>This tweet showing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tbpinvictus\/status\/1281256803788107776\/photo\/1\">average new cases per day of COVID-19 along with Trump&#8217;s comments<\/a> on the pandemic is rather damning.<\/li><li>NPR looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/07\/05\/887283058\/a-look-into-the-wild-economy-of-tabletop-board-game-funding\">how crowdfunding has changed the board game industry<\/a> in the wake of the RPG Frosthaven, the sequel to Gloomhaven, taking in $12.9 million in its Kickstarter run.<\/li><li>A Minnesota State Senator, who is also a physician, is now under investigation after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citypages.com\/news\/sen-scott-jensen-says-hes-under-investigation-for-coronavirus-claims\/571648581\">spouting nonsense conspiracy theories about COVID-19<\/a> on social media. He has a history of voicing anti-vaccine sentiment too.<\/li><li>This isn&#8217;t exactly news, but a new study showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/denver.cbslocal.com\/2019\/11\/04\/anti-vaxxers-exploiting-religious-exemptions-vaccinations\/\">anti-vaxxer parents are fraudulently using state religious exemptions<\/a> to avoid vaccinating their kids. With no penalty for doing so \u2013 and minimal enforcement \u2013 they&#8217;re not going to stop until this loophole is closed.<\/li><li>Mental Floss has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/626321\/sourdough-starter-discard-recipes\">nine possible uses for sourdough starter discard<\/a>.<\/li><li>I included this last week as well: There&#8217;s a petition online to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/georgetown-historical-society-remove-the-confederate-monument-in-georgetown-delaware\">demand the removal of the Conferederate flag and monument to Confederate soldiers<\/a> at the Nutter Marvel Carriage Museum in Georgetown, Delaware.
