Note how many instances\nhe documents of the federal government abdicating its responsibilities to state\nand local authorities, and his statement that Arizona reopened &#8220;while\ncases were still rising&#8221; \u2013 bad news for MLB teams with training sites\nthere.<\/li><li>Former NHL player Akim Aliu&#8217;s essay &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theplayerstribune.com\/en-us\/articles\/hockey-is-not-for-everyone-akim-aliu-nhl\">Hockey\nis Not For Everyone<\/a>&#8221; is a damning look at racism in North American\nhockey.<\/li><li>Serious Eats explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriouseats.com\/2020\/05\/sourdough-starter-science.html\">the\nscience behind sourdough starters<\/a>.<\/li><li>Drowned out by some dubious news about a\ncommercial COVID-19 vaccine venture was the news from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical\nCenter about <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2020\/05\/vaccines-found-that-may-protect-against-covid-19-in-animal-models\/\">two\nstudies showing another vaccine protected primates against the same virus<\/a>.<\/li><li>Quarantine fatigue is real, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/05\/quarantine-fatigue-real-and-shaming-people-wont-help\/611482\/\">policymakers\ncan learn from HIV-prevention efforts<\/a> who realized abstinence-only efforts don&#8217;t\nwork and instead focused on risk reduction strategies.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/05\/17\/856090474\/home-but-not-safe-some-lgbtq-young-people-face-rejection-from-families-in-lockdo\">The\nshutdown has forced many LGBT kids to return home<\/a> to families that have\nrejected them or parts of their identities.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2020\/05\/20\/859814085\/researchers-nearly-half-of-accounts-tweeting-about-coronavirus-are-likely-bots\">Nearly\nhalf of the accounts on Twitter tweeting about the pandemic are bots<\/a>,\naccording to new research from Professor Kathleen Carley and others at Carnegie\nMellon.<\/li><li>VICE looks at the disturbing AF world of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_uk\/article\/m7jjp3\/coronavirus-conspiracy-theories-5g-lockdown\">COVID-19\n&#8220;truther&#8221; groups on Facebook<\/a>, which promulgate bullshit\nconspiracy theories and engender anti-lockdown protests.<\/li><li>BuzzFeed runs through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/janelytvynenko\/coronavirus-spin-doctors\">some\nof the quacks and fake experts<\/a> pushing pseudoscience and conspiracy theories\nabout the pandemic, including Judy Mikovits, the disgraced researcher behind\nthe bogus documentary &#8220;Plandemic.&#8221;<\/li><li>Some COVID-19 patients <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-52754280\">show severely depleted levels of\nT cells<\/a>, which may be a clue to potential treatments.<\/li><li>As if we didn&#8217;t have enough to worry about from\nthe pandemic, it has interrupted inoculation efforts around the world to the\npoint that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/22\/health\/coronavirus-polio-measles-immunizations.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nythealth\">measles\nand polio outbreaks are becoming more likely<\/a>.<\/li><li>Iowa&#8217;s efforts at testing for COVID-19 and\nsharing that data with local officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2020\/05\/21\/coronavirus-governor-kim-reynolds-test-iowa-site-linn-county-covid\/5229515002\/\">appear\nto be a disaster<\/a>.<\/li><li>Dr. Dannagal Young, a Professor at the University\nof Delaware, describes how her late husband&#8217;s brain tumor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/first-person\/2020\/5\/15\/21258855\/coronavirus-covid-19-conspiracy-theories-cancer\">led\nher to chase numerous conspiracy theories<\/a> in a quest to regain control of their\nlives.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5840195\/ahmaud-arbery-violence-against-black-men\/\">White\npeople&#8217;s &#8220;unreasonable fear,&#8221;<\/a> which is itself unjustified, is\nkilling black Americans, writes conservative journalist David French for <em>TIME<\/em>.<\/li><li>I knew this was likely coming, but I&#8217;m still so\ndisappointed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gencon.com\/press\/updates-gen-con-covid19?fbclid=IwAR3HHBa6_Xnjh2K_kOyPFoGJFCtkMAUdlapHyoxmw0jOW8qOobfBG_zaX7s\">Gen\nCon 2020 has been cancelled<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week I had two related columns for subscribers to the Athletic \u2013 my 2010 redraft and my list of the 2010 first-rounders who didn&#8217;t pan out.
